It’s a rematch of Opening Day, as Aaron Harang leads the Reds against the Cubs and Carlos Zambrano. The only difference is we’re playing at Wrigley Field today. Let’s hope the result is the same as we saw in that first game.

Juan Castro will be in the lineup, but so will Josh Hamilton, I imagine. Has Hamilton’s magic worn off in the last couple of days? Will he really collect a couple more extra-base hits today? Will Hamilton leave during the 7th inning stretch to save a puppy from drowning?

All these questions, and more, will be answered in today’s game thread!

  1. I heard on the radio that they called up Enrique Cruz from AA to replace Gonzalez. Does that require a 40-man roster transaction?

  2. Greg: Reds moved Tommy John Denorfia to the 60 day DL today too I believe

  3. Sweet Lou is talking on MLB live, said that Aramis Ramirez might be out for a couple of days… That’s good news for the Reds!

  4. WOW I’m shocked Phillips swung at the first pitch!

  5. I’m really impressed w/ Hamilton’s patience at the plate.

  6. Phillips swings at a first pitch and Dunn strikes out. This is a fitting start to the game.

  7. 1st and 3rd w/ 2 outs. Can EE redeem himself? I don’t remember the last time the Reds scored with runners at 1st and 3rd with less than 2 outs so I’m not too optimistic.

  8. No reason for optimism this time either. . .

  9. I’m a big fan of the Reds’ new unis, but they would have been best if they just ditched this road cap altogether. The road unis would look a lot better with the same solid red cap we’re wearing at home.

  10. I’m convinced that Phillips has pictures of Narron with a Shetland Pony…leading off? Are you kidding me?

  11. Damnit. Double by Lee scores Jones who singled and stole a base.

  12. Barret singles in Lee (2-0 Cubs).

  13. It seems like Phillips is either leading off or hitting third. Both seem ridiculous to me.

  14. Anyone else trying to watch MLB.tv today? Mine is not working at all

  15. Harang strikes out the first 2 batters and then gives up 4 straight hits. It looks like the Reds are going to have to score some runs today against Zambrano. On the bright side, Ross isn’t in the lineup.

  16. Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the only way the Reds can score is HRs by Dunn and/or Hamilton? Griffey isn’t healed yet and the Reds cannot manufacture a run to save their lives.

  17. Rosecrans reports that Gonzalez’s son is in critical condition…

  18. 4 straight balls to Hatteberg, let’s try and get some runs this inning…

  19. It’s not good when your lineup has 3 or 4 guys that you want hitting 7th or 8th.

  20. Another inning, another runner stranded in scoring position.

  21. 2 innings, 2 left in scoring position…

I’m not sure I can take this much longer 😑

  22. If you didn’t foresee offense being a problem for this team, I think you were kidding yourself…

  23. Double by Zambrano. Word is that Gonzalez could be gone for a long period of time if his son does not improve. That would mean we would have to tolerate Castro and/or Enrique Cruz for a while at SS.

  24. 3-0 Cubs…

This one might be over before we get to the 5th inning.

  25. 3-0 Cubs. It sounds like Griffey didn’t make as great an attempt to catch that ball as he should have. Did anyone see it or is Marty just being bitter?

  26. I suddenly have the urge to go run some errands. I’ll check-in later and hope to be surprised.

  27. Phillips at SS, Freel at 2b, and Hamilton in CF?

  28. I’m working…but is Harang just “off” today?

  29. I’m watching on CSN-Chicago HD in Indy.

I took the afternoon off for this?

  30. “This is ugly”

And with that, I’m done with this game… There’s always tomorrow.

  31. Giving up?

I have faith that the Reds will make this a game.

  32. Josh Hamilton doesn’t make sense.

  33. Did Philips just take six straight pitches?

  34. I Love Adam Dunn!

  35. Boy, did I call this comeback, or what?

Of course, I didn’t expect it to happen in the next seven batters. πŸ˜†

  36. Holy crap! Time to leave work so I can hear this in the car!!! I can’t believe Reds have come back to take a lead like this! Wow!!! πŸ˜€

  37. Now I have a feeling that those 3 LOBs will come back to haunt us!

Let’s hope this feeling is wrong!

  38. My new motto:
    F.A.P.F.F.

    (Find a place for Freel)

  39. Ugh. Todd Coffey. 2 outs then can’t close the deal. Its like you need a closer for his innings.

This is a sweet comeback if the reds can hold or add some insurance.

  40. NO way! Ross popped out. At least he made contact

  41. Yeah… Ross needs to figure it out… he and EE look lost at the plate completely. Phillips is making contact but has been completely impatient at the plate. As for my offensive analysis, that is pretty much it for the season. Griffey’s coming around and has been pushing the ball well. Dunner is looking awesome. Freel’s ok, Gonzalez and Conine have been surprising. I don’t even have to mention Hamilton. Hatteburg makes good at bats… everything has looked great except for the two games we BLEW out in Phoenix.

Hopefully we don’t blow this one. Coffey gets the job done again, we could use an insurance run or two right here. What a weird game this has been. Start out looking like a bunch of little leaguers, luck into a Zambrano unraveling, and thus far it has been enough to hold the edge in the ballgame. I’m a bit concerned about Harang’s last couple of outings, but he will be ok as the season goes on I’m sure. Here’s to us closing this one out…

  42. Any reason why both backup catchers were used as PHers and not Freel or Conine?

Assuming the AA guy isn’t in Chicago yet, that 3-catch thing (+ 12 pitchers) is really hurting the bench depth.

Got a little worried in the 6th, too. Don’t know why Coutlangus can’t go 2 innings there.

  43. Oh boy…Weathers in to face Theriot, Jones, and Lee with just a one run lead. Say a prayer

  44. NICE NICE NICE!!!! Struck out Carlos Lee!!!!

  45. I mean Derrek Lee… I’m thinking Zambrano, haha

  46. uh oh. Stormy Weathers moving in… Runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 out. Floyd coming to bat…

  47. THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS!!!!! What a crazy game…

  48. YES YES YES!!

  49. Coffey gets the win by scorer’s decision

  50. well, we didn’t deserve that one today, so that makes up for one of the D-backs games we should have won! Good job Reds… I know I had given up on this game!

  51. You know CeeKeR… “Never give up… Never Surrender!”

  52. Interesting – sole possession of first place by way of the come-from-behind victory and the Cardinals/Brewers getting rained out.
