Shortstop Alex Gonzalez will be away for a few days:
The Reds on Thursday placed shortstop Alex Gonzalez on the bereavement list so he could return to his home in Venezuela to deal with an undisclosed family matter (a sick child, I’m told).
Gonzalez, who left the team Thursday morning, is permitted to be away for a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven days. Cincinnati was off on Thursday and will announce a corresponding roster move before Friday afternoon’s game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Redleg Nation offers our best wishes to Gonzalez and his family. We’ll let you know when we find out who will be called up to replace Gonzalez on the roster.
Prepare to see a couple of days of Juan Castro.
Update: C Trent Rosecrans reports that Johan Gonzalez (Alex’s son) is in the hospital in critical condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gonzalez family.
