I don’t know if we’ll do these all spring, but since today is the first game of Spring Training, I thought it might be a fun time to delve back into Game Thread Land. WLW will be broadcasting the game (and XM and MLB.com, I’d imagine), and I’m sure I’m not the only one who is looking forward to hearing Marty Brennaman’s voice. Plus, today is the debut of Marty and Thom in the booth.

Finally, baseball is back.

Discuss the game and anything else you want right here. For starters, what do you think about today’s starting lineup?

Ryan Freel CF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Adam Dunn LF
Mark Bellhorn 1B
Josh Hamilton RF
Alex Gonzalez SS
David Ross C
Eric Milton LHP

Try to not to get too worked up. It’s just a spring lineup, after all (of course, that said, it’s actually not that bad a lineup).

  1. I don’t understand batting Ross 8th. It’s good to see EE batting third. I wish I had a radio at work. Sigh.

  2. […] 12:55 p.m.:  (Other than Griffey in the OF and Conine/Hatteberg at 1B, that’s Cincinnati’s Opening Day lineup.) 12:49 p.m.: According to Redleg Nation, here’s the Reds’ starting nine: […]

  3. Finally. Baseball is back. Wish I could listen to Marty and Thom!

  4. I don’t understand why mark belhourn is on this team, who’s next, Zack Cooper

  5. I’m kind of curious about what happened with Bellhorn. The original lineup had Conine, not Bellhorn. They changed it before game time.

  6. oh my god. first batter goes yard on milton. baseball is back.

  7. dunn ties it with a bomb in his first ab just as marty was talking about how he needs to make better contact and take a different approach at the plate.

  8. Milton gives up a homer, Dunn hits a homer.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  9. Wow, it’s strange listening to Thom Brennaman doing the Reds game. I like it, though.

  10. Eric Milton gives up 2 runs and 6 hits. In less than two innings, I think.

  11. Marty is pouring the love on Brandon Phillips. Still hates Dunn, though.

  12. Ryan Freel is the quickest outfielder I’ve seen since Zack Cooper

  13. Listening on Gameday Audio at mlb.com.

  14. Freel wreaking havoc on the basepaths already, but the Reds can’t score.

  15. scott is the best commenter that I’ve seen since Zack Cooper.

Of course, I have no idea who Zack Cooper is.

  16. Josh Hamilton is coming to the plate.

Yes, Hamilton, Griffey, and A-Rod were all #1 picks out of high school.

  17. Reds have signed Dustin Hermanson to a minor league contract, with an invite to major league camp.

Good signing. Low risk, high reward.

  18. Marty just announced we signed Dustin Hermansen.

  19. most reports i read about hermanson were awful. i expect him to get shelled in ST and go to AAA.

  20. You might be right, Al…in fact, I suspect that is exactly what will happen. But if he can recapture some of his earlier form, he could help the bullpen. There’s no risk in this signing.

Well, I guess there is the risk that he will end up replacing a better reliever on the roster, just because he has a “name.” Narron loves experienced guys. But I don’t see that happening here.

  21. So far these are Dunn’s numbers:

    OBP : 1.000.
    SLG: 4.000
    BA: 1.000

Where are all the naysayers now? Cooperstown, here we come!

  22. …and is anybody suprised we signed the Dusty one? I’ve been waiting on this for a couple of weeks. Stanton, Weathers, Cormier, Hermanson….great bullpen….in 1995.

  23. Hermanson had over 30 save with a sub 3 ERA in 2005. His issues are with his back, not his arm. Good, no risk signing…….Local guy, too.

  24. Mickey, Zack Cooper was the #3 overall pick in the 1993 draft for the cubs and never developed like they thought he would, but he had a successful minor league career once he switched from catcher to outfield and is now a scout in the Florida Marlins system

  25. What’s the status of Hermanson’s back problems?

  26. Aaaahh…thanks, Scott.

  27. Josh Hamilton reminds me of Dan Huffman because of his terrific strength

  28. marty claimed the HR is the most overrated stat in baseball. hmmm. smack talking bellhorn about his k’s while mark goes deep. marty needs to keep ripping on reds, they just go yard.

  29. Listening to Thom & Marty is great!

    Marty – “I’m not a sentimental person but…….”

Thom – “You need a minute there old timer?”

    😆 😆 😆

  30. I’m jealous of everybody listening to the game today while I’m at work. Sounds like Thom is going to bust his dad’s chops a little bit. That’s awesome.
    Anyway, HOORAY baseball is back!

  31. Sooo, Sac flies are a more valid indicator of a player’s abilities than Home Runs?

    Home Runs directly affect:
    1) AVG
    2) SLG
    3) OBP
    4) RBI
and probably other stats I am not listing at the moment. Yeah, really overrated stat. HR’s to hitters is like K’s to pitchers….maybe those are overrated too…
    5)

  32. hamilton went large to center. sounded very large.

  33. ….I’m sorry, I’m just a little cheesed off about Marty’s “HR being overrated” comments….even the THREAT of being an home run guy makes pitchers throw to you differntly; you will draw more walks (perhaps those are overrated as well). Marty, just because you dislike Adam Dunn so much, don’t minimize the importance of the entire category of the dinger…..Some of the best baseball memories I have as a young man is hearing Marty call a longshot while hearing Joe in the background yelling “get out of here, get out of here!” Yes, that’s a sentimental argument, but if they weren’t so important to the outcomes of games their wouldn’t be so much sentiment attached to them. Just call the game and leave Dunn alone for a minute.

  34. i love marty, and always will, but he’s the very definition of old school baseball. like honus wagner old school.

  35. like honus wagner old school. 😆

Maybe we can sell him for $3 mil to an anonymous collector!

  36. Ground ball to fly ball ration was good today. 13 to 9 ratio.

  37. Hamilton reminds me of a young Greg Bishop.
