The Newest Red

Via Red Reporter, I see this article about the recently recalled Todd Coffey.

Blame Chad for creating this mess.

Chad launched Redleg Nation in February 2005, and has been writing about the Reds ever since. His first book, “The Big 50: The Men and Moments That Made the Cincinnati Reds” is now available in bookstores and online, at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and wherever fine books are sold. You can also find Chad’s musings about the Cincinnati Reds in the pages of Cincinnati Magazine.

  1. Todd Coffey, meet Derrek Lee…

  2. Most of the article seems positive until the end: “The Reds want him to develop his secondary pitches: a split-finger, slider and changeup. So far Coffey seems a little resistant to the idea. ‘I’m still going to throw fastballs more than anything else,’ he said. ‘To me, that’s the best pitch in the game. You’ve got to go in there fearless.'”

It makes it sound like his 2004 minor league success was based on his major league fastball. It doesn’t seem (from the article) that he realizes that major league hitters can hit a major league fastball, especially when they know you are going to throw it everytime.
