Blanco Watch

Keep an eye out the next few days to see what Jim Bowden does with Tony Blanco, who had a pretty decent spring with the Nationals:

BATTERS BA SLG OBA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO
Blanco .289 .368 .378 38 2 11 3 0 0 6 5 10

I’d seriously doubt if they’ll keep him on the roster, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Bowden didn’t try to work out a deal with DanO to try to hold onto him outside of the Rule V path. My guess is that he will end up being returned to us.

  1. Looks like we aren’t getting him back right away. The Washington Post reports that Blanco has made the opening day roster.

Don’t look for him to stick all season. They currently have Carroll, Cordero, and Blanco as their backup infielders. Carroll can play a little SS, but they have been rumored to be looking for a true reserve SS already. Look for a deal or waiver claim for a SS with a decent glove and then Blanco will more than likely be the odd man out. His bat is going to go stale big time coming off the bench for them, especially seeing that he has still not seen the light of day on a AAA roster. He is still a big time long shot to last the season with Washington. I think we’ll see him in Louisville before the season is over.
