1. CF Billy Hamilton: No surprise here. 155 steals. Hit .323/.413/.439 at high A Bakersfield and .286/.406/.383 at Double-A Pensacola. Hamilton was No. 2 on the list last year to Devin Mesoraco.

2. RHP Robert Stephenson: The No. 1 pick in 2011. Touched 100 mph in Dayton last year.

Games Played on 8/16/2012

Minor League Players of the Day: Sammy Diaz and Junior Arias brought the Dayton Dragons’ offense to life with nearly identical batting lines. Each batter went 3-for-4 with a double, a homerun, a stolen base, 3 runs scored, and two RBI. Sammy Diaz also walked once.

AAA
Charlotte 8 – Louisville 6

Dioner Navarro was 2-for-4 with a walk and a grand slam. Neftali Soto was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and a run scored. Didi Gregorius was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Felix Perez had two hits in 5 at-bats, including a double.

Tim Gustafson allowed all 8 runs, 5 runs in the 1st, over 4.1 innings. He gave up 9 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 4. Travis Webb, Nick Christiani and Bill Bray pitched 3.2 shutout relief innings. For Bray, it was the second appearance of his rehab assignment. He’s thrown a shutout inning in each outing.

Pensacola was rained out. The game will be played as part of a doubleheader today.

Minor League Player of the Day: Bats LF Willie Harris was 3-4 with a double and homer in the Bats loss to the Mud Hens.

AAA

Louisville 4 – Toledo 2

Willie Harris was 3-4 with a double and homer and Corky Miller was 2-2 with a walk.

Tim Gustafson threw 6.1 one run innings, picking up his 4th win. He gave up 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out 4. The bullpen was effective (in varying degrees, 0 earned runs) the rest of the way with Jordan Smith picking up his 12th save with .2 innings of hitless relief work.

AA

Huntsville 5 – Pensacola 3

Billy Hamilton was 0-2, but walked 3 times. He stole 2 bases (thrown out once). He now has 23 stolen bases in AA, giving him 127 for the year (thrown out 27 times). That was the offensive highlight for the Blue Wahoos.

Daniel Corcino started and threw 6 innings, gave up 5 runs on 7 hits, walked 3 and struck out 2. Brian Pearl threw a scoreless inning of relief (2 hits), Mark Serrano threw a hitless inning.

Minor League Player of the Day: AZL Reds Catcher, Jose Ortiz went 4-4 with 2 doubles. He’s only played 4 games for the Baby Reds, but his slash line is impressive thus far. .462/.533/.846

Toledo 7 – Louisville 3

Chris Valaika was 2-4 with a homer, Nefi Soto was 2-4 with a double, Bill Rhinehart was 2-4, as was Denis Phipps.

On a bullpen day, Kanekoa Texeira got the start and threw 2 innings, giving up one run on a hit. Travis Webb was ineffective in his 2 innings, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits. Carlos Fisher threw two hitless innings, but did allow 2 walks.

AA

Pensacola at Tennessee was suspended in the 4th inning with Tennessee leading 2-1.

Minor League Player of the Day: James Allen threw 7 shutout innings. From Tom Nichols on Allen’s great game:

Allen retired the first 14 batters he faced and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. He did not allow a runner past first base and faced only one batter over the minimum, retiring 20 of the 22 hitters over seven scoreless innings.

Buffalo 10 – Louisville 7

Cody Puckett was 1-for-3 with a walk and a 3-run homerun. Neftali Soto went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored and 2 RBI. Henry Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Didi Gregorius extended his modest hit streak to six games with a double.

Todd Redmond (5.1ip, 5r, 9h, 1bb, 8k) was 2-for-2 at the plate, but not as consistently good on the mound.

AA
Huntsville 3 – Pensacola 2

Daniel Corcino (6ip, 2r, 5h, 1bb, 5k) gave up just 2 runs over 6 inning, notching his 6th quality start in his last 8 games.

Donald Lutz was 3-for-4 with a double and a solo homerun. Billy Hamilton extended his AA on-base streak to all 14 games he’s played for Pensacola. Hamilton went 1-for-3 with a walk, but didn’t attempt any base thievery.
