From the Bats (Twitter)

Bats down Clippers, 6-5. Matt Klinker (3.0ip, 3h, 1bb, 3k), Sean Danielson (2-5, 3B, 2 SB), Michael Griffin (2-4, 2 2B). For in-depth updates on spring training games, follow the Bats on Twitter at twitter.com/louisvillebats

Looks like a nice outing for Matt in his push to be a AAA starter.

Spotlight Player Update: Complex photos

I know I’m overdue for a spring training update, but for now I hope these pictures of the new complex will hold everyone over until I get some thoughts down.

On Todd Frazier

Second baseman of the future?

C. Trent has a terrific profile of Todd Frazier here.

I don’t know what it is about Frazier, but I really like the kid. I had never seen him play until last summer, when I got a chance to catch several Carolina games. Before watching him play, I was indifferent. [...]

Today’s cuts — no real surprises (UPDATED)

From MLB.com:

The Reds now have 48 players in Major League camp.

Prior to Thursday’s game against the Indians, the Reds optioned infielder Yonder Alonso and left-handed pitcher Bill Bray to Triple-A Louisville and optioned right-handed pitcher Jordan Smith and left-handed pitcher Philippe Valiquette to Double-A Carolina.

The club also assigned right-handed pitcher Jon Adkins and outfielder Josh [...]

Less than three weeks away!

We are now less than three weeks away from Opening Day, and I can’t wait. How about you?

The news seems to be coming faster and furiouser, so to speak. Here’s a quick roundup of items that I couldn’t justify posting individually. As a group, however, it’s a wonderfully fruity Spring Training Roundup! Woo-hoo!

–My excitement over [...]

Awwww, crud

(Editor’s note: File this under “Great Minds Think Alike”; you may have seen a version of this post earlier today. Tom and I wrote similar posts on the same subject and posted them within minutes of each other. I’ve combined those two posts into this one. –Chad)

CHAD: I don’t like this one bit:

It might be [...]

First cuts of the spring

I’m told that the Reds are going to make their first cuts of the spring today: Danny Dorn, Alexander Smit, Chris Denove, and Brandon Yarbrough are going to be reassigned to the minor league camp.

The trimming has begun.

Jim Kern: The Outfielders are Tired

Today, one of my favorite baseball quotes of all-time, courtesy of former Reds relief pitcher Jim Kern. Kern is reported by Sports Illustrated (April 9, 1979) as having made this statement while pitching for the Rangers, recalling a moment when he was removed for a reliever.

“I told him I wasn’t tired. He told [...]

More on those fabulous young pitchers

We’ve been salivating over the young pitching talent in this organization lately, and there’s more to drool over today. John Fay writes about Travis Wood and Mike Leake here (we linked it earlier, but C. Trent’s piece on the same subject is excellent reading as well). Meanwhile, over at Redlegs Baseball there is this in-depth [...]

All these young pitchers

Reds lose to the Indians again, this time 4-2. Many more bright spots today, however.

Chief among those bright spots were a couple of young pitchers:

Baker got his first look at pitching prospects Mike Leake and Travis Wood against major-league hitters. Wood worked two hitless innings and Leake, a first-round pick in 2009, pitched a perfect [...]

Aroldis Chapman’s Adjustment

Really nice profile of Aroldis Chapman here, focusing on his adjustment to life in America. The last two paragraphs, in particular, paint a stark picture of the differences between living in the US and living in Cuba.

This is another reason why I hope the Reds don’t jump the gun and add Chapman to the Opening [...]

From C. Trent

From C. Trent’s Blog:

On training in Arizona:

I talked to Justin Lehr a bit about pitching in Arizona, he’s been in several camps out here in his career.

He said you’ll see monster ERAs from guys during the spring and then they’ll have nothing else. Last year Zack Greinke had a 9.64 ERA in the spring. [...]

Pitching, pitching, pitching

John Fay has the pitchers who will work tomorrow’s intrasquad game, as well as Friday’s Cactus League opener. First, tomorrow:

Aaron Harang, Homer Bailey, Enerio Del Rosario, Jordan Smith, Logan Ondrusek, Alexander Smith, Philippe Valiquette, Pedro Viola and Aroldis Chapman will pitch in an intrasquad game on Thursday.

Yep, that will be Chapman’s “debut” of sorts. Can’t [...]

Thought this was interesting

John Fay wrote an interesting article on Chris Valaika today:

Reordering the article some..but…

Valaika, a 24-year-old infielder, hit .235 with six home runs and 36 RBI in 266 at-bats at Triple-A last year.

Mind you, the season before Valaika combined to hit .319 with 18 home runs and 81 RBI at Single-A Sarasota and Double-A Chattanooga.

He won [...]

Around the Interwebs

These links were compiled by the home office in Big Stone Gap, Virginia:

–Chris Burke fractured his right ring finger yesterday. Less depth for Louisville, at least for a while.

–Chris Dickerson wants a shot at center field; so does Drew Stubbs. All I know is that Stubbs is brilliant defensively, but Dickerson will get on base [...]
