Pirates at Reds (July 13, 2014)

The Reds and Pirates conclude their series with today’s rubber match at GABP. The first two games have been exciting and I expect nothing short of that in today’s finale. Both teams are looking for a win and the series in order to stick right with the Brewers and Cardinals who are now tied atop the division.

Today’s game concludes the first half of the regular season. We will all get to relax for a few days and enjoy the Homerun Derby, the All-Star game, and a day off. Let’s hope the Reds have some momentum heading into those 3 “off” days.

  1. I will give Jumbo some props, I am always skeptical on 30 year minor leaguers, but he is getting the job done for the most part in high leverage situations. Got out th etop of the order, hopefully that is their last at bat for the day.

  2. I realize that website pitching locations are not necessarily reliable but the ESPN one does not seem to match the umpires strike/ball calls.

    • I don’t think Billy is running at full speed. Maybe that hammy is barking a little bit. Great time for the ASB all the way around.

  3. Love to see Hamilton spraying line drives all over the field. Single most encouraging part about his first half of the season.

      • It would be nice to see his time compared to say April and May. Just not seeing that explosive first step. He should never be thrown out by that distance. Hopefully the break will freshen his legs some.

  4. They were talking about Mike Marshall of the dodgers…In 1974, he pitched 208 innings out of the bullpen appeared in 106 games…incredible

    • Which makes you wonder why everyone’s elbows and shoulders explode in today’s game. Relief pitcher throwing 208 innings, starters could throw 300, sometimes pitch counts went like 150.

Now it’s TJ for anyone who has a pitch count over like 110, or pitches more than 200 innings, or more than 80 in relief. It’s weird.

Is it because everyone is trying to coach a certain pitching motion now that’s not natural to the human body?

      • Cueto’s on pace for 290. Wonder when they start taking that into consideration and have him skip a start here and there.

  5. Told you Broxton was fine. This 7-8-9 back end of the pen might be the best in the NL if not all of baseball.

  6. There is literally never any excuse for Cozart to be batting 2nd in a major league batting order.

  7. I’m glad Broxton got the job done, but I am also a little saddened that the Reds have clearly not gotten rid of bullpen “roles” like Price promised.

    • I guess Price knew he’d hit a pop-up that would fall between three fielders when he faced Liriano, and then get two solid hits off relievers. Gotta hand it to him for realizing it.

  8. Just sad that because of the “save” rule, Chapman has been saving three-run leads but wasn’t available for the one-run lead last night.

  9. The Reds look tired. Tough first half let’s get this done today and get some rest and healing.

  10. Not sure how many here saw 51-44 and 1.5 games out of 1st place at the break. Fantastic job by the Reds made even more remarkable by the injuries. The much needed rest week has arrived and look forward to watching the Reds play in the Bronx.

    • I would had 44-51 1.5 games out of last place much more likely around early May (I gave up when they lost back to back series against the Padres and Phillies) but always watched out of curiousity- I am amazed at the turn around
if it was not the All-Star break in sights, truely wonder if they pull out these games this week, played on fumes this weekend and almost pulled off the sweep

    • Ever since that blown save he has looked possessed out there. Right now he’s just untouchable. Crushing batters and striking guys out at a rate that probably has never been done before over a sustained period of time.

  11. Congrats Simon for making the all star team. Now I hope he doesn’t pitch. Me and my boy are taking the trip up to NY for yankees/reds after the break on Friday and Saturday. Save those Simon innings for Reds games
