This Week on the Farm

There was a rash of midseason roster movement over the last week.  Let’s catch up on many of the comings and goings in the Reds organization.

AAA Louisville Bats

The Bats cleared some space on the AAA roster by releasing 3B Chris Nelson (.692 OPS, Age 28), SS Argenis Diaz (.604, 27), and 1B Shelley Duncan (.648, 34).  Promoted from AA Pensacola to the Bats were 3B Juan Silverio (.774), RP Justin Freeman (4.24. ERA, Age 27),  SS Rey Navarro (.794), and 1B Steve Selsky (.777).  These moves seem pretty clear cut as the each of the released older position players were hitting poorly and the newly promoted younger players were all out pacing the Southern league average OPS of .716.  Freeman, who over 17 IP has allowed 17 H and 4 BB with 16 K, has thrown better than his ERA might suggest.  While these are all deserved promotions, we are all still eagerly awaiting the promotion of some of the talented SP prospects still at AA.

AA Pensacola Blue Wahoos

As discussed in other threads, promoted to the Blue Wahoos is SP Ben Lively (2.28, 22), OF Jesse Winker (1.006, 20), OF Kyle Waldrop (.925, 22), 1B Marquez Smith (.995, 29), RP Carlos Gonzalez (0.57, 24), 2B Ryan Wright (.843, 24), and 3B Seth Mejias-Brean (.872, 23).  SP Mikey O’Brien (3.86, 24) was demoted to A+ Bakersfield and RP Lee Hyde (5.83, 29) was released. All of these promotions were well deserved and much anticipated.  Got to feel a bit sorry for O’Brien being demoted to A+ with having a dead on Southern League average 3.86 ERA.

High A Bakersfield Blaze

Recently promoted to the Blaze were IF Brent Peterson, IF/OF Sebastian Elizalde, 1B Sean Buckley, C Julio Morillo, OF Jeff Gelalich, SP Ismael Guillon, and RP Layne Somsen.  The biggest ones here to keep an eye on are IF/OF Sebastian Elizalde (.941, 22) and Ismael Guillon (3.17, 22).  I thought Nick Travieso (3.29, 20) might be getting a promotion too as he bounced from Dayton, to Billings, to Extended Spring Training, and back to Dayton within a few days.

Low A Dayton Dragons

The Dragons have added IF Ronald Bueno, C Jose Ortiz, OF Jonathan Reynoso, SP Jackson Stephens, and RP Radhames Quezada.  The Dragons released C Brandon Dailey.  Reynoso played well in the AZL in 2012 (.739) but struggled last season at Billings (.565).  Stephens spent time at Dayton last season (4.59) and Quezada pitched well in Dayton in 2012 (3.35) and only tossed two games last season at Bakersfield.

  1. Very surprising to see that Travieso was not moved up to Bakersfield. Maybe they want to give him a full year at each level.
