Game Thread: Reds at Astronomicals (2013.09.18)

The Reds have dominated and completely beat down the Houston Astros in the first 2 games of this series.  The Reds need to do the same thing tonight to close this series out before heading to Pittsburgh for a pivotal 3 game series.  Not only does a win tonight keep the Reds within distance to take over the 1st wild card spot, but it also helps eliminate the thought that Washington is going to catch the Reds for that 2nd wild card spot.

Discuss the game here, Reds fans.  Lineup below the fold.

1. Choo – CF
2. Phillips – 2B
3. Votto – 1B
4. Bruce – RF
5. Ludwick – DH
6. Frazier – 2B
7. Cozart – SS
8. Mesoraco – C
9. Billy Hamilton – CF

Greg Reynolds – P

  1. Chapman could easily go 2 innings tonight. Why is he not in the game? Unbelievable this idiot.

  2. This inning is the epitome of the season. I’m still too stunned with the BP/Votto carnage to properly evaluate the reasons for first leaving Hoover in and now bringing in Duke to face a RH hitter, arguably their hottest hitter…..and immediately after Duke lost a game due to a RH. AMAZING BRUCE CATCH saves the game momentarily.

    • @Redgoggles:
and if you have faith in Duke, why is he not in there in the 6th?

Did Hoover get hurt, that is bizarre. I do not agree with not using Chapman, but I understand the logic, keep him for the lead

  3. Anyone else see the Cardinals finish off the Rockies? They were jacked big time. There’s a team that understands the gravity of the situation.

  4. It is beyond mind-boggling that with the game on the line in the 9th, in the middle of a pennant race, we have 2 guys warming up that were both in the minors 3 weeks ago.

  5. I cannot wait for the day that Dusty Baker is no longer manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

    • @homerandbruce: How dare Dusty Baker cause Phillips, Votto and Ludwick to complete such a terrible trio of plate appearances in a such a key situation in recent memory. What was he thinking?

  6. @prjeter: did you forget that bunting reduces your chances of winning?that includes the fact that many bunts are unsuccessful, like this one.cheating or not, the bunting call is idiotic and continues to screw this team at the most important of times.

    Preach it!

    • @tpteach: I guess no one read anything I wrote. Spectacular. I hate bunting so very much. Never advocated for it.

Although I think my posts are getting deleted, so I’m just going to stop. I think calling BP a cheater for cheating is against the Terms of Service.

Let’s hope they pull this one out. Good night, ladies and gents.

  7. Dusty would save Chapman in game 6 of the World Series down 3 games to 2 in case the reds got to game 7.

As someone said before, Dusty’s motto is “managing for tomorrow’

  8. MOST important game of the year and Baker lets Ondrusek throw 30 pitches and uses Zack Duke in the 9th inning in a tie game. Duke with his 2nd walk off loss, wow. Baker needs to go, he has cost this team prob 15 games with putrid management.

  9. Why in the world would you bring in Zach Duke there? Why in the world would you intentionally walk someone to get to Altuve. I don’t understand.

  10. Why is Duke in the game??? Does Dusty even care about winning. This is awful managing!!!

  11. Both teams loading the bases in the 9th, without the benefit of a hit, and leave them loaded without scoring. Cincy doing their best Houston impression tonight.

  12. Line drive right at someone — exactly what Dusty anticipates when he asks the essentially-minor-leaguer to deal with the game’s toughest situation while his best relief pitcher watches.

  13. The Reds deserve to lose.

Their play in the top of the 9th inning show why this team isn’t going any-where. BP knew he was out of the baseline by a mile -as he’s the same player that ruined it for the Reds and Homer Bailey by his STUPID base-running in the fist inning of game #3 of last year’s playoffs. And Joey swinging at the first pitch and not allowing Hamilton to steal 3B is a joke. This team has major talent but is not fundamentally sound.

  14. I’m still trying to figure out how Dusty’s shenanigans didn’t cost us the game in the 9th. He must have made a pact with the devil.

  15. Astro broadcasters questioning why Dusty would have Cozart bunt with 8 and 9 coming up.

  16. So which member of the Nation is going to be called upon to pitch the 10th?

“The ‘stros are too minor league to use any of our big league pitchers, so we decdied to recruit a member of RLN” – Dusty Baker after the game.

  17. Hottest hitter bunts to set up the coldest hitter and a guy making his first start.

  18. Dusty’s managing has cost us too many games like these. It is so frustrating. He’s gotta go.

  19. I’m currently watching the scene from Moneyball where Billy Beane is instructing his team never to bunt. Seems so fitting for the current moment. I wish I could implant this scene in a neverending reel into Baker’s head.
