Minor League Player of the Day: Amir Garrett kicked off the Rookie League season with a solid start for the Billing Mustangs. Garrett allowed just 1 unearned run on 3 hits and one walk in his 5-inning start while striking out 6 batters. This was Garrett’s third start in the Pioneer League, dating back to last season, and he is yet to allow an earned run at that level.

AAA
Durham 2 – Louisville 1

Armando Galarraga (5-5, 3.05 ERA) allowed both runs over 6 innings on 8 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batter while striking out 3. Logan Ondrusek pitched the final two shutout innings, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 2.

Neftali Soto (2-for-4) collected two of the Bats five hits, extending his hitting streak to 6 games. Jason Donald had a double, a walk and scored a run in four plate appearances. Billy Hamilton led off the game with a single, stole second base, but then was picked off second to cut down the Louisville threat. He later drove in the lone Bats run on a groundout.

AA
Montgomery 3 – Pensacola 1

Ryan Dennick (3-8, 3.23 ERA) threw his third straight quality start. Dennick allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and one walk over 6 innings, while striking out 5.

The Blue Wahoos offense only had 3 hits and 3 walks. Theo Bowe’s solo homerun in the 3rd inning provided the only Pensacola run. Yorman Rodriguez reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.


High A
Bakersfield 3 – High Desert 2

Shane Dyer (2-0, 1.37 ERA) has had a quality start in all four of his start in the Reds organization (all with Bakersfield.) Dyer pitched 7 shutout innings without walking a batter (though he hit two), allowing 4 hits and striking out 5. Kyle Lotzkar struck out two batters over the final 1.1 innings for the save.

Yovan Gonzalez (2-for-3, 2B, R, RBI) was the only Blaze with more than one hit. Kyle Waldrop added a solo homerun in the 7th inning.

Low A
Lake County 11 – Dayton 3

Nick Travieso had a rough start in this one, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits (3 homeruns) in 2 innings. Travieso walked just 1 and struck out 3.

Junior Arias (2-for-4, HR, 2 R, RBI) extended his hitting streak to six games. Beau Amaral (2-for-3, 2B, HBP) was the only other Dragon with more than one hit.

Rookie Opening Day
Billings 7 – Great Falls 1

Amir Garrett allowed just 1 unearned run in his 5-inning start. Garret allowed just 3 hits, one walk and struck out 6 batters. He is yet to allow an earned run in three Billings starts.

Werleen Taveras, Nolan Becker, and Abel De Los Santos combined for four shutout relief innings, striking out 6 batters.

Daniel Paula (2-for-4, R, RBI) had two of the Mustangs 6 hits, and was the only player with more than one hit. Reds 2013 first round pick, Phillip Ervin (1-for-3, BB, HBP, SB, R, RBI) reached base 3 times in his professional debut. Jon Matthews had a triple in two at-bats but also walked 3 times and stole a base.

AZL Reds 9 – AZL Indians 4

2012 10th round draft pick, Jeremy Kivel (4.2 ip, 4 hits, 2 runs, 3 bb, 6 K) allowed only 1 earned run in his professional debut. Juan Martinez pitched the remaining 4.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, no walks and 4 strikeouts.

Kevin Garcia (2-for-4, HR, 4 RBI) hit the first homerun of the AZL season. Aristides Aquino hit a 2-run homerun in the 7th inning.

2013 5th round draft pick, SS Cory Thompson (2-for-3, 2 HBP, 3 R) reached base four times and scored thrice out of the leadoff spot. Jose Fernandez (2-for-3, BB, SB, 2 R) also had a pair of hits.
