Neftali Soto called up

Mark Sheldon is reporting, based on seeing the player in the clubhouse, that 3B Neftali Soto has been called up from Louisville.

Soto, who moved from 1B before the season is batting .269/.310/.388 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 33 games. I will have more with him later. Soto will wear No. 50.

This is almost certainly a temporary move until Johnny Cueto comes back on the roster to pitch on Monday. Tony Cingrani has thrown his last major league pitch for a while and can safely be sent back down.

It will be interesting to see if Soto gets a start today or tomorrow given the struggles Superman Clark Kent Todd Frazier is having at the plate. I doubt Soto will start. A pinch hitting role makes more sense if even that much.

Glad to see the Reds being aggressive with the roster moves.

  1. Frazier is starting tonight. I’m really suprised Hannahan isn’t getting more starts. It’s hard to remember this is the first year Frazier has been an everyday player. That can be tough on a guy mentally and physically, especially when you’re slumping and hitting into bad luck like he has been.

  2. Yes, I’m glad they’re being aggressive with roster moves….unless Dusty feels the need to reward Soto by having him pinch hit in a crucial situation when someone else makes more sense. I really hope Soto doesn’t have friends/family in the greater-Philadelphia area. :-)

  3. I guess the question now is whether this is just a cameo for Soto or if they send down/ disable Lutz or Robinson to keep Soto up come time for Cueto to start. I think they really want a RH bat on the bench besides the second catcher; so, I would not be surprised to see Soto stay up until Heisey is back.

There are also some other intriguing but less likely possibilities. For instance, Soto and Hanahan are the same guy except for one being a LH hitter and the other a RH hitter. Perhaps Hanahan might be traded. As noted above, we tend to forget that Frazier is a relative newbie at the MLB level. It isn’t totally off the charts that he might be sent down to for a week or two or three to work on something specific on his hitting. This would be the sort of thing that wasn’t all so much unusual years ago but doesn’t seem to happen much any more.

  4. With Frazier having problems at the plate, I doubt Dusty will ask him to play multiple positions. They seem enamored with Lutz/Robinson/ etc. in the outfield anyway.
