Game Thread: Reds at Nationals (2013.04.27)

Yes the Reds play again today.  I am guaranteeing the Reds at least double their runs and hits total for the series in today’s game!  Of course, that would not be extremely hard to do.

Today’s game has an afternoon start for Fox national television.  I’ll be on the road dodging rain drops to try and play some youth baseball.  Therefore I’ll need the loyal followers of the Nation to keep posted on game happenings.  Do not disappoint me!

Let’s go somewhere today Reds.

    • “Seems to me that we have bigger fish to fry.”

Then we are in trouble, because you need batter to fry fish.

      bada-bing!

  1. XP is in?!?

  2. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an entire team go into a hitting slump at the same time. I mean everybody. There isn’t 1 guy on the team that is swinging the bat. Not one. There has to be something to that. Is it Baker? Is it Jacoby? Are there issues in the clubhouse?

  3. Nationals have more hits in the last 2 innings than the Reds have had in the last 30 innings.

  4. Cozart’s great defense is going to come in really handy someday if the team ever scores a run.

  5. Reds should have some good ABs next inning. The question is will they still only be down by 2?

  6. Yuuuupp… that’s just about right for how things are working right now for the Reds… or rather “working”.

  7. If Heisey goes on the DL (and a strained hamstring is not good), who do the Reds bring up? There aren’t any outfielders that are major league ready. Billy Hamilton?

  8. Mercifully, I am spared watching this b/c of the Fox national blackout. Checked the box score, saw that we had our one hit, moving on with the rest of my Saturday.

  9. Well, at least this doesn’t look like it’s going to be a spoiled pitching performance and a nail biting tough loss. There’s that…..

  10. WOW… last 6 games: 8 errors… 5 errors for the rest of the season. So horrible bats AND horrible defense. Is this even the Reds anymore?

They are not focused. You can see it in everything they do. They are just going through the motions…getting their big paydays.

  11. Reds have officially hit rock bottom. I guess they can only go up from here. How long before Jocketty makes some moves?

They have to do something to shake this team up.

7 straight, going on 8 straight losses on the road? Championship teams do not do that.

  12. Just leave Mike out there. Treat it like a Spring Training game and let Leake get his work in.

  13. I’m not the least bit concerned about the 4 run deficit because Chapman will be available to pitch in the only inning that matters in a baseball game.

  14. I’d have the whole team out at 6:00 AM in the morning running pole-to-poles until they puked. Maybe that would light a fire under them.

The non-effort is not to be tolerated.

  15. Nice job Mike Leake. Way to keep the team in the game. pitching himself right out of the rotation.

    • @RedForever: At this point giving up more than one run is failing to keep the team in the game, so I think we can cut the pitchers some slack.

        True.

  16. Leake was pitching kind of like Leake. I don’t get why you pull him now. If Cingrani gets roughed up or just doesn’t go deep in the game tomorrow, with no Parra and Simon presumably not available we’ll be in big trouble.

  17. Pathetic.

If only the Reds had a firethrowing lefthander in the fifth spot in the rotation who could serve as a stopper for them in this situation.

It’s too bad the Reds don’t have anyone like that.

  18. Why am I still watching this? I feel sorry for Castellini. He forked out the money big time to field a talented team, but then made the mistake of giving Baker a contract and keeping Jacoby.

  19. The highs and lows of a baseball season…

Just remember guys, this happened last April too. I recall a certain four game series against the Nationals that ended in a Votto grand slam and started with three losses.

That same team ended up with 97 wins.

    Cheer up.

It was never this bad last year.

      • Actually it kind of was. Same issues with the lineup. Same amount of posters talking about the sky falling, etc. There were lots of players who were constantly bashed on, etc. etc.

    • @rfay00: Yes, we struggled last April. I think we’ll be fine overall, and we’ll win the division unless the Cardinals keep pitching like their starters have all been possessed by the ghost of Cy Young. But our hitting philosophy, our wasting of Chapman, and Dusty’s bullpen management will all still be there come playoffs time. Which makes me sad.

      • @Eric the Red: To clarify: by hitting philosophy I mean our inflexibility. I’m not actually too worried about our ability to score runs, and I think our recent struggles have a lot to do with facing a surprising run of quality arms.

  20. Back to the question about pulling Leake….Dusty keeps lamenting the whole 20 games in 20 days thing. We have an important series against the Cardinals coming up, and Cingrani is not someone we can expect to send out there for 120 pitches tomorrow. Leake can hit, and we could save our long man. I really dont get it. Unless he’s hurt.

    • @Eric the Red: I agree. Already said I’d leave him in past 100 pitches. I think Dusty was being delusionally optimistic that. 1) Simon would hold them and 2) that the Reds would make a run.

  21. Drove five hours from NY to be at the game today…for this? Sure would have been nice to have seen Chapman start today. I hate you, Dusty!

  22. Hah! Fox just showed we’re batting 1.000 with RISP today. Washington’s only hitting .400 with RISP today. So we must be winning, right?

That is the only runner the Reds have had in scoring position in 3 games.

  23. Love Marty – “Quite honestly Chris Heisey has failed miserably”, in reference to being handed LF after Luds went down. Brutal but refreshing at the same time. I like Chris and believe he will come around but there is zero reason to sugarcoat it right now.
