2013 Reds / Reds - General

No News is Not News

Still waiting to see if the Reds do anything this week other than re-sign players from last year. Here’s a new thread anyhow.

Apparently the Reds have “genuine” interest in Jack Hannahan, according to John Fay:

The Reds have talked to Jack Hannahan. He hit .244/.312/.341 with four home runs and 29 RBI in 318 at-bat for Cleveland last year. He played mostly third, but he also played seven games at shortstop. He can first base as well. He’s a 32-year-old, left-handed hitter. The Reds need bench help.

Who-hoo.

  1. How in the world do the Twins trade both Span and Revere and WJ is left empty handed once again?? The Reds have plenty of prospects to make a more promising offer than the Nats and Phils. Unbelievable. Is WJ doing his due diligence or just oogling the beautiful women in Nashville??

Why would the Reds trade any prospects of significance (top 10) when their #1 prospect should be ready to assume that position in one year? Span was the closest fit and it would have cost at least Corcino – not worth it.

Choo, Ellsbury, Fukudome, Suzuki, Sizemore, Posednik, Torres seem like semi-realistic targets if a new leadoff hitter/outfielder is acquired.

Walt Jocketty didn’t acquire a leadoff hitter but the farm system remains stocked with good young arms. Jocketty isn’t coming out empty handed, he’s holding tightly onto pitching. I doubt he’s oogling beautiful women at the winter meetings (are there any? aren’t the players, personnel, and agents all men? Maybe there are some female reporters), I think he’s happy to have pitching that he worked so hard for years to acquire.

  2. @redsfanman: Japan’s ‘hit king’ playing for the team of MLB’s ‘Hit King’ to close out a storied career. That is quite an angle.

I agree that Suzuki is probably not worth it. I do think 6 million to him puts the Reds in a better position than standing pat, but there are still better, more afforadable options.

I don’t think Pete Rose is much of an angle outside of Cincinnati. If any Japanese baseball fans made the trip to Coopertown they wouldn’t hear anything about Pete Rose. It can also be spun as the superstar hitter who left Japan for the temptations of riches heading to the former home of Pete Rose, a superstar hitter who was banished from baseball because of his quest for riches (in the form of gambling). Not a good angle. You spin it your way, I’ll spin it my way :D

@rhayex: Right.Could this be a signal that a SS position at AAA will be vacant afterall?

To me it signals that they want to have more than one shortstop on a roster even in AAA. Carrying a second shortstop on the roster, that’s why guys like Valdez and Edgar Renteria have been acquired by the Reds. They’ll also probably be looking for another minor league catcher.

  3. Doubtful. I’d think it more likely that they Gilmartin is a backup at AAA. I guess they could move him or Gregorius, or Gregorius wins a starting job in ST (which would mean Cozart or he moves positions or are traded), but it’s a longshot at best.

  4. MLB Trade Rumors is reporting that, what with Keppy and Chavez being off the market, Jack Hannahan has become a popular target, and is asking for a multi-year deal.

Even our Hannahan dreams are slipping through our fingers. Dang.
