Dodgers lose game 1 vs. Nats, which hurts us twice. Means Nationals extend lead for No. 1 seed and it means Cards get just that much closer to that 2nd WC slot…
The Reds are going to go tonight. I predict they’re going to go 12 times. Leake keeps the ball down and the Cubs look foolish out there. 12-1 Redlegs in a laugher & we all go to bed early.
@dn4192: As long as the Reds keep winning, it’s going to put pressure on Washington to win. They have 4 left vs Milwaukee 6 with Philly & 3 at St Louis. Not an easy road for them.
On mlbnetwork they just showed Wrigley, very strong winds are blowing straight out. Everyone’ going to be trying to hit a fly ball. Leake has got to keep them on the ground.
Drew Stubbs still looks for walks, like tonight. And he’s fast – he’s probably the only one on the team that scores on that ball. Votto’s first post-surgery RBI.
Yes, Stubbs is struggling mightily (as are many of the Reds) but he still brings some unique skills to the team. Glad to see him have a bit of success.
Derek Jeter had his 200th hit of the season tonight. He may pass 3300 by the end of the season. What can I tell obnoxious Yankee fans that say he will out-hit Pete Rose besides the fact he is 38 at shortstop and that is not sustainable? They’d just say he’d move to DH, right?
@Steve Mancuso: Just what you probably already know: That he went for tests to hopefully rule out pneumonia. He made it sound like he’d be back for the game, but Rob Butcher told media that he isn’t back yet….Apparently, the players didn’t even know he WASN’T there until the media brought it to their attention
Didi is better defensively & at least a marginally better hitter than Valdez. It’s not like there aren’t other options. He’s just not a veteran. #dustylineup
I just love listening to the other team’s broadcast when Votto is at bat. The cubs announcers are just in awe of how disciplined he is and almost gave him too much credit for the placement of that ground ball single. He gets tons of respect from the rest of the league and he deserves it.
@pinson343: I wonder if there are variations between teams/organizations for that. The stereotype would be that the Reds would swing at a higher percentage of 3-0 pitches than other organizations that put more of an emphasis on taking walks.
Of course, analyzing walk rates between teams is confounded by Joey Votto, who basically walks so much he keeps the Reds respectable overall.

I think it’s in league rules that you have to walk Votto at least twice every 3 games, if not more. Did I see correctly that he’s already back at the top of the intentional list for the NL?
Speaking of Ludwick, I haven’t seen anyone say that the Enquirer (Daugherty) relates that a prominent club official says Ludwick will not be back next year.
Since we are playing SF in the NLDS more concerned with them…
If the Reds win tonight, they are 1 game behind the Nats. So, you are wrong to say that “we are playing SF”. Nats have a tough schedule last 2 weeks, also.

Odds favor us being the two seed. They own the tie breaker. They are a bettter team.
Odds favor us being the two seed. They own the tie breaker. They are a bettter team.
It’s pretty close, I’d say. If the Reds win tonight, I’d put it at very close to even. Washington plays 6 vs PHI, 3 vs STL, 3 vs MIL, and 1 vs LAD. Reds play 3 vs PIT, 3 vs STL, 3 vs MIL, 3 vs LAD, 1 vs CHI. The Reds, to me, have a slight schedule advantage. I’d say Washington has a 55% chance, as of right now.
My first reaction to Starlin Castro’s ground ball was “out number three.” It looked like a play that should have been made, but “slick-fielding” Wilson Valdez wasn’t able to get to it. I just want to make sure my dislike of Wilson Valdez wasn’t affecting my perception of the play… so, throwing this out there… should that play have been made, or not?
And that is why Jose Arrendondo does not make my Reds’ post season roster. too many BB’s. Too many lead off and inning BB’s. If he gets the first 2 outs of the inning he has trouble getting the 3rd out.
I missed most of the commentary, earlier tonight between Kelch & Welsh about Chapman and the Miami trip, b/c my MLB.TV feed has been awful tonight. Anybody fill me in as to what they said?
I’m beginning to think Chris Spier has taken too many lessons from Dusty as to bull pen management. Wheres a LH pitcher vs Valbueno? Too late now. Maybe auditioning for playoff roster spots tonight? Hoover does not have the control were used to seeing tonight. Damn
I’ll take the Reds bullpen over the stupid Cubs bullpen any day. In other words I like the Reds chances to pull this game out better then the stupid Cubs.
Sergeant2: I’ll take the Reds bullpen over the stupid Cubs bullpen any day. In other words I like the Reds chances to pull this game out better then the stupid Cubs.
Latest word on Dusty from Marty is that chest x-rays ruled out pneumonia, but Doctors ran a battery of test. Marty concluded by saying Dusty hasn’t been seen in the dugout.
I must say with all sincerity as a lifelong Reds fan that I feel bad for the Pirates and Pirates fans. To say that the wheels have fallen off, would be a gross understatement. They are currently .500…wow. What a tormented fan base
Pulling LeCure after 18 pitches for Ondrusek? Sam is throwing the best stuff of his big league career these days, and Ondrusek promptly gives up a 340 footer, which luckily was foul. I got a bad feeling about this inning.

If Valdez runs hard out of the box, easily beats that by a step. He was still standing with the bat in his hand, watching the ball until the pitcher misplays it. Just terrible effort right there.
Like I’ve said before, if the game goes into extra innings, its time to end the announcers taking turns calling the game. Its nail biting time, and the fans deserve to hear the analysis of both announcers.
@Hank Aarons Teammate: No, either of them could have caught the ball. It was Heisey’s ball, but Stubbs could have caught it if he didn’t stand there looking at Heisey.
@Hank Aarons Teammate: You’re right that the play was close, call could have gone either way. Hard to feel bad for him though with him not running it out.
[Mini-rant here: when I played Little League I was a pretty slick catcher, but couldn't hit worth a damn. I tried to make up for this by running absolutely as fast as my legs could carry me anytime I put the bat on the ball. Wilson Valdez needs to adopt a similar policy.]

I agree. I’d like to see Valdez running out grounders as fast as he can, in Louisville.
BP almost got thrown out at second when he may have even been able to make it to third. Ticks me off, but he brings a lot to the table. Valdez, not so much. FREE DIDI!
@seat101: You missed the Reds blow a lead and then the Cubs do stupid stuff with a chance to win in the bottom of the 10th and on the field in the 11th.
“Mercy” How bout that, this team just keeps on plugging on, no matter the score or inning, they just keep on playing. Of course we owe a tip o the cap to the stupid Cubs for continuing to be the stupid Cubs. I have my broom at the ready. Go Reds!! Adios Amigos.

My wife has never had the experience of winning a World Series. The Reds are about to give her a great Christmas present!
That would be a great Christmas present!!
Go Reds!!

@dn4192: After losing Kershaw and Billingsley, the Dodgers are probably thru. I think the Brewers have the best chance to catch the Cardinals.
Votto has all your ribeyes!!
That is one angry Joey out there right now.
Man, I get nervous every time I see Votto slide. Thought he aggravated his knee for a second there.
Did anyone see or hear one of the pre-game shows? I’m wondering if they reported anything about Dusty Baker’s health.
It is great to see Stubbs fly. Are the Reds undefeated when he scores more than once?
Leake sounds like he’s hitting his spots so far. 3 ground balls.
Darwin Barney is the guy people are talking about as a Gold Glove 2nd baseman ? His range doesn’t seem that good.
It is because he hasn’t committed an error in 130+ games.
Valdez is really shaky at SS.
Keep those ground balls coming, Mike.
Can Leake be the 25th guy on the roster in the postseason as the backup infielder?
Leake looks so much better at the plate than Valdez. Valdez just gave away his AB.
Mike Leake is flat out a better hitter than Wilson Valdez. The Reds should work with Leake to be the backup SS/2B. I’m sure he could do it.
Didi is better defensively & at least a marginally better hitter than Valdez. It’s not like there aren’t other options. He’s just not a veteran. #dustylineup
Love it when Stubbs bounces one like that, it’s either a hit or an IF error.
Joey is unreal. It’s like he just guides that ball through the infield.
Said it before and I’ll say it again!!!
Votto has all your ribbys!!!!!
Two more RBI for JoeyMVP. Lucky placement for a ground ball, but we’ll take it.
Stubbs’ speed gets him to third, that’s important with just one out.
Wow, Stubbs got to 3rd on that single ! Soriano has such a slow release.
Ludwacked!
Leake is almost unrecognizable since he changed his hair style from “Skateboarder” to a more Dapper Dan kinda look. Wooooo! Votto drives in two.
Hahhahahahah
He will not settle for Fop.
@Geoff Glaab: Welcome to Redleg Nation!
Somebody pinch me! The Reds aren’t being mesmerized by a pitcher they’ve never seen before!!! Add on, baby!!
I just love listening to the other team’s broadcast when Votto is at bat. The cubs announcers are just in awe of how disciplined he is and almost gave him too much credit for the placement of that ground ball single. He gets tons of respect from the rest of the league and he deserves it.
Feels good to have an early big lead. Thank you Cubbies.
Why do hitters swing so often on 3-0 now ? It’s become routine.
Yes it does. But the wise guys have the over/ under at 14
@pinson343: I wonder if there are variations between teams/organizations for that. The stereotype would be that the Reds would swing at a higher percentage of 3-0 pitches than other organizations that put more of an emphasis on taking walks.

I think it’s in league rules that you have to walk Votto at least twice every 3 games, if not more. Did I see correctly that he’s already back at the top of the intentional list for the NL?
Leake looks good- 0 hits so far
Dodgers up 5-0 on the Nats in game 2
You know it’s a good night for the Reds when MValdezP gets a double.
Wonder if Dusty is yelling from the hospital to have Leake sacrifice bunt.
that one made me laugh …
Surprised that Brantley and Marty were whole-heartedly opposed to bunting there
Valdez outhit Leake this time around. When he goes to RF like that, he has some success.
@Steve Mancuso: Let’s hope, for his health, that they’re not even letting Dusty watch the game.
@vegastypo: That’s a tribute to Leake as a hitter.
Wow, crazy catch there.
Tough break there for Leake, seemed like he was getting squeezed a little on the two batters before that then the grounder goes off Joey’s glove.
@Mwv: Leake was definitely getting squeezed. Let’s add some runs.
Wilson Valdez hit a double? Really? I did not see it. Did someone fall down?
30 stolen bases for Stubbs, three years in a row.
Continued evidence of going. Go even more, Reds!
Nice short stroke by Rolen.
Stubbs is on game tonight. Good for him, good for Reds.
@Hank Aarons Teammate: Low line drive to RF.
I hope tonight is not a one game streak for Stubbs …. he’s scored 3 times already!
@jas_428: I agree that Stubbs is looking good tonite. Maybe that big catch in Miami helped him.
Did Ludwick get hurt?
If radio crew mentioned it, I didn’t hear it…Heisey in there now??
DP: Good job by Leake against a LHed hitter with pop.
Whats up with Ludwick, did he hurt his ass?
Yes, came in top of 6. Just said left groin injury, damn.
Precautionary measure. Ludwick’s left groin tightened up running the bases, per the Reds twitter feed.
So far, so good. Reds 5-1 after 5 innings.
Wrigley has normally been a slump buster for Stubbs & Bruce. Stubbs is getting off the snide tonight, hopefully Bruce breaks out soon.
For those not watching, they just said that Luddy “left groin tightness” is why he got subbed out. Let’s hope it’s minor.
Speaking of Ludwick, I haven’t seen anyone say that the Enquirer (Daugherty) relates that a prominent club official says Ludwick will not be back next year.
WOW. Holy cow that was awesome.
Left. Groin. Tightness. *crosses fingers/crosses self
With the way the Brewers are playing I am all for the Cardnials getting that 2nd WC spot.
Since we are playing SF in the NLDS more concerned with them…
If the Reds win tonight, they are 1 game behind the Nats. So, you are wrong to say that “we are playing SF”. Nats have a tough schedule last 2 weeks, also.

@Larry1980: Even with Chris Carpenter returning Friday?
Should have been called strike 3 to Rizzo, set that up.
That’s what happens when you throw a pitch right smack down the middle of Broadway.
Mike Leake being Mike Leake. He loses it in a hurry.
Perfectly, right down the middle. Surgical, actually.
Thank goodness the stupid Cubs are the stupid Cubs.
Dusty has access to a telephone, right?
That was a Starlin Castro play there. Thanks, Cubs.
Phillies down to their last out, Ryan Howard hits a 2 run homer to give them the lead.
@pinson343: Cannot believe the possible comeback they’re making. All without Wilson Valdez, too.
Dodgers 6-0 lead is gone. 6-6 in the Bottom 8th
And that is why Jose Arrendondo does not make my Reds’ post season roster. too many BB’s. Too many lead off and inning BB’s. If he gets the first 2 outs of the inning he has trouble getting the 3rd out.
Arredondo really needs to be used like a LOOGY in close games.
I’m with you George. I want him nowhere near a playoff game.
Jay raced around like crazy for that one.
Yeah, he made a pretty good play on that ball.
31,001 showed up for tonight’s titanic struggle, 31,001.
Dodgers blow a 6 run lead, then Matt Kemp homers in the 9th.
Cards 3 Astros 0 bot 8th.
Henry Rodriguez loves low pitches. And sees success from them
Is Todd Frazier still on this team?
Its to bad the Reds bullpen is so weak, they have to leave a pitcher who is clearly struggling in the game.
I missed most of the commentary, earlier tonight between Kelch & Welsh about Chapman and the Miami trip, b/c my MLB.TV feed has been awful tonight. Anybody fill me in as to what they said?
Just as I was about to endorse Hoover, he too, walks the lead off man. Echhh
Thank you Soriano, for swinging at crap
The sunflower seed deserves to be drilled
Hoover getting squeezed big time
I’m beginning to think Chris Spier has taken too many lessons from Dusty as to bull pen management. Wheres a LH pitcher vs Valbueno? Too late now. Maybe auditioning for playoff roster spots tonight? Hoover does not have the control were used to seeing tonight. Damn
Can we get Chris Speier a Magic 8 Ball, for the bullpen? (I know LeCure wasn’t warmed up)
According to Gamecast, pitches 1,2 & 4 were all in the zone there.
By the way I was being sarcastic.
LeCure don’t play like that.
Lecure throws that pitch so well.
Hmmm. Too bad LeCure wasn’t ready one batter sooner.
I’ll take the Reds bullpen over the stupid Cubs bullpen any day. In other words I like the Reds chances to pull this game out better then the stupid Cubs.
Prophetic.
I thought Hoover got squeezed several times. It also looked like he was overthrowing his fastball.
On mlbnetwork they said Hoover’s first pitch to Castillo was right over the plate. The next 3 didn’t look so good.
I don’t think STL is going to help our Magic # tonight. We’re all on our own.
I’d tell Stubbs he’s taking every pitch.
And he would have walked.
Someday, maybe Heisey will learn that a walk is extremely important in that situation, and Marmol basically has no clue where his pitches are going.
It was disappointing for a non home run hitter to swing at a 2-0 pitch from about the wildest relief pitcher in baseball, with Bruce on deck.
@AnnapolisHoosier: Both I think. He’d get squeezed and then he’d overthrow the fastball.
It’s really interesting how in some outings, Lecure looks like he’s throwing BP, and in other outings, he seems completely dominant.
Marmol kinda reminds me of Eddy in a huge talent, no control/head type of way.
Nice play by Navarro. LeCure is just awesome right now.
I think Navarro will be the difference maker, next inning. Or, I’m going to sleep.
Latest word on Dusty from Marty is that chest x-rays ruled out pneumonia, but Doctors ran a battery of test. Marty concluded by saying Dusty hasn’t been seen in the dugout.
Okay. I didn’t say it’d be a positive difference maker. Night. GO REDS!
walk him before you throw him anything close
I must say with all sincerity as a lifelong Reds fan that I feel bad for the Pirates and Pirates fans. To say that the wheels have fallen off, would be a gross understatement. They are currently .500…wow. What a tormented fan base
Pulling LeCure after 18 pitches for Ondrusek? Sam is throwing the best stuff of his big league career these days, and Ondrusek promptly gives up a 340 footer, which luckily was foul. I got a bad feeling about this inning.
I have a bad feeling any time Ondrusek enters a game.
Why aren’t we walking Castillo to set up the double play?
Well, this is after the fact, but Jackson doesn’t hit into double plays. He’s struck out in 50% of his big league at bats.
If the Reds win it’ll be because the stupid Cubs are the stupid Cubs.
@Steve Mancuso: Because Ondrusek is gonna strike him out of course!
@Steve Mancuso: If we walked Castillo and Ondrusek couldn’t find the strike zone to Jackson we would be in big trouble
We at least we know Ondrusek isn’t going to be pitching any more this game. Thats gotta be a weight off the chest right?
@Steve Mancuso: That was discussed on mlbnetwork. Jackson is fast. Also Castillo is a strikeout guy, as is Jackson.
Ondrusek did a great job. How do Heisey and Stubbs not catch that pop up ? On mlbnetwork they’re giving both of them a hard time.
Because they were playing deep because of the situation and the pitcher.
Ondrusek got unlucky on that hit, but was very lucky the game didn’t end with Soriano circling the bases.
We used to have a player named Frazier who could hit pretty well. I vaguely remember him.
I am hoping it’s just rest. His OPS is .547 in September. He could use some rest, but I do worry that the Reds have buried him.
If Valdez runs hard out of the box, easily beats that by a step. He was still standing with the bat in his hand, watching the ball until the pitcher misplays it. Just terrible effort right there.
Valdez makes Paul Janish look like an offensive specialist
Real close play there. The second replay left open the possibility he was out by a millimeter. The first one looked definitely safe.
The Valdez play too close to call, even in slow mo. Tie should go to the runner.
@dc937: Yep, no doubt about that.

I agree. I’d like to see Valdez running out grounders as fast as he can, in Louisville.
Why would Phillips square to bunt in the 10th with 2 outs/0 on?
I can’t think of many things dumber than that.
Sing along: Here We Go Redlegs Here We Go!!!
The Cubs are, indeed, stupid.
Game winning RBI for Stubbs. Three hits and a walk tonight.
Good comeback for Stubbs!
6-5 Reds top 11th
Can’t believe that first pitch on Heisey was called a strike. High and inside.
Wow. The Cubs are amazing. BP should have made it to 3rd, instead he almost got thrown out at 2nd. Doesn’t matter against the Cubs.
How about a slam for Jay?
I would be ok with that
Sheesh, another hurt player isn’t what we need. That didn’t get him on the hand, did it?
@Hank Aarons Teammate: Looks like it got mostly the knob of the bat but grazed his hand.
Just for grins, if the Reds win this game they will clinch a wild card with either 1 more win, or a loss each by LA and Milwaukee.
About BP’s squaring to bunt, I’ve noticed he often does that when he’s taking a pitch.
great pitching dual in Seattle
BP almost got thrown out at second when he may have even been able to make it to third. Ticks me off, but he brings a lot to the table. Valdez, not so much. FREE DIDI!
Time for Johnathan “Redwood” Broxton to take care of bidness and close this baby out. Go Reds!!
duel…oops
Howdy all! Just got in from work. Did I miss anything? Who’s going to the games this weekend? I am definately going Saturday.
Lecure did a great job tonight though Stubbs is the big star.
Reds have gone 32 innings without a home run and have one in the last 58 innings.
But have a 4-2 record over that stretch.
@Steve Mancuso: Nice stat. Reds pitchers must be wondering where the homers have gone.
This link needs to be in the Titanic Struggle Recap tonight:

All time classic right there.

Hot dog!
Sloppy, but a win’s a win. You know, those Cubs are stupid.
wooooooooooooooooooooo!

Oh forgot. Wooooooooooo!!!!!!
@pinson343: sounds like fun. If you win. Which we did. Thanks for the update!
