Again with a solid lineup, at least with Cozart being unavailable. I sure hopr Cozart can get that back thing handled and behind (no pun intended) him soon. This lineup has been playing well together, just not getting the results. Hopefully tonight will be a bust out night offensively and allow Arroyo to weave some of his magic again.
Phillips 2B
Heisey CF
Votto 1B
Ludwick LF
Bruce RF
Frazier 3B
Hanigan C
Valdez SS
Arroyo P
Daggumit, I love watching Heisey play baseball. The guy plays all out every play of every game. He makes mistakes, probably more than his share, but every mistake he makes is from trying to make something happen. The defensive play last night was nothing short of spectacular. What I liked best about that play was Ludwick hustling over to CF knowing that Heisey would try to make a play on the ball and being in a position to back him up if the ball skipped past him. That was simply solid from every perspective.
In continuing from the other thread about being positive does anyone on here doubt that if we get hot in October, specifically Bruce/Phillips/Ludwick that we can’t beat any team out there? I’d include Votto in that but he’s automatic and Frazier will bring something too. When our guys are on I don’t think anyone in the league can stop us and that’s about all you can ask for come playoff time.

I definitely agree. But, that can be said about all the teams in the playoffs.
I definitely agree. But, that can be said about all the teams in the playoffs.
That’s my point though, all I want is a good shot. I don’t feel like the Reds will be over-matched by anyone likely to make the postseason this year. We have enough pitching and defense that all we need are some hot bats to thrash another team on any given night.

For all we know, Votto could go 0 for 15 and Stubbs could go 8 for 15 with 3 home runs.
Joey V has a .471 OBP. That’s just sick! He leads all MLB by more than .050 and there are some players having a very good year in OBP. Joey V (.603) is also only .003 behind Ryan Braun (.606), who has the highest SLG in MLB. Joey V (.344) also leads Andrew McCutcheon (.343) for the highest BA in MLB (I’m discounting anyone who we know is juiced…Melky!). Those are the best performances in MLB, not just the NL. I’m sorry, I know he has missed a third of the season and will not reach qualifying status by the end of the regular season, but someone will have to convince me that Joey V doesn’t deserve strong consideration for NL MVP.
I think marty just said Hanigan has thrown out 16 of the last 31 to try to steal on him? That seems unreal….I can’t help but think the Reds’ brass didn’t quite expect Hanigan to perform this well.
@Mwv: I think everyone is going to be like that. I think he’ll lead the league in walks even with the time he missed. I believe he’s third right now, but I need to check.
Hey all. First time commenter here, but long time Reds fan and Redleg Nation follower. Jason’s article this morning finally got me to officially sign in and comment here. I really appreciate his call for some more love for our boys in Red. This year has been nothing sort of exciting. Even my 2 year old daughter is in on the fun…her favorite words are Joey Votto! Go Reds!!

I didn’t see the exact stat, though I thought he didn’t have any all of last year nor so far this year. But that doesn’t seem possible …
Votto has not popped up to the infield all season. In fact, he has popped out to the infield only three times in 2,138 plate appearances over the past four seasons.
Votto has pulled a ball foul into the stands only once in his entire major league career. Once.
As much as a lot of people wanna say that he sucks, I’ve got some faith in him. His approach does suck, and he swings at anything. Imagine if the dude could actually hit. Heisey’s good, but Stubbs could be fast AND good. Glad they’re finally giving Heisey a chance though.
@jas_428:
I didn’t hear that, but you’re probably right. They did say that it was only a temporary benching. But I like Heisey there for now, the guy just has a better bat and not a lot of dropoff defensively that I’ve seen. But I can’t say I’d hate it, let’s see what Drew does after losing his position for 2 games. Hope that competetive spirit pulls through for him.
I still can’t believe what a good year Phillips has had. He hasn’t fallen off a bit from last year.
I was 100% convinced that last year was going to be the mountain top for him, and we would be disappointed this year…but you are right…AND add to that getting moved around the lineup…right now we are getting our money’s worth.
@Tourniquette: Broxton makes me a little nervous because of his peripherals. I need to take a closer look at him. I haven’t had a chance yet.
I saw him in his first game with the Reds after the trade at GABP. Pretty awesome, but I wouldn’t have anything against seeing Marshall and Broxton switch places. As Marshall has proven that he’s a great reliever, Broxton is actually getting another chance with a better ballclub. At any rate, how about Jocketty making the weirdest trades that work out fine? (Except for Madson, nothing he could do about that though)
@JAMinPA: I think almost all of us thought that. Given his age, last year just had all the trappings of a peak season. He’s really de-emphasized homers though, and much to his benefit. If he he keeps hitting line drives like he has been for the last season and a half, he’s going to be good for a while.
What Reds player would you want backing you up in a bar fight? I’d take Hanigan….or Corky Miller.
I’ll go unconvential with Brandon Phillips… I’m banking on the fact he could stop the fight by making people laugh and relax, thus saving me from getting roughed up in the first place. I shouldn’t be in a bar fight.
This is MLB.comTV’s free game of the night. I don’t have cable and am usually a bar watcher/Marty listener. It’s so much fun to watch our team play.
Kind of wishing Dusty would insert Didi here… offensively it’s at worst a wash, and then consider it a defensive replacement for the rest of the game if it stays close.
Regard the nonsense about the Reds not hitting with RISP that Marty was griping about a few minutes ago. Reds OPS is .745 for the season. .734 with RISP.
Just a thought for next year…what are the chances Frazier takes over for Rolen, H-Rod takes over for Miggy, and Didi takes over for Valdez? I guess that leaves someone who needs to take over for Frazier…but still, that ain’t all bad. Thoughts?

Based on the Reds limitations in salary, I would say that is highly possible.

@rfay00: While I believe it will happen, salary limitations won’t be a big reason, will it? They had roughly 8 million left on the table at the start of the year, that new ESPN TV deal gives everyone more money and the uptick in attendance, they should have plenty of cap.
@hermanbates: I can’t say I am the expert on the salary stuff, but I do know that if Ludwick’s option is picked up and they sign Bailey, Leake, and Latos to million plus dollar deals, the Reds will be looking to free up some room.
I believe Bailey, Leake, and Latos are all arbitration eligible…could be wrong.
@Tourniquette: My wife is a Yankees fan & that was usually Arroyo’s style in those NYY/BOS playoff games. Ever since then, he’s always had the nickname “cornroyo” in our house.
@Greg Dafler: I’d keep him. You know he won’t get hurt and he’ll throw a ton of innings. That’s very valuable.
Yeah, Arroyo is signed up for 6.5M next season with 15M deferred through 2021. If traded, the 15M in deferrals are voided and paid up-front. So he isn’t going anywhere. Besides, we don’t have anyone in AAA ready to backfill for him yet. We should have a few candidates after next season from likes Cingrani, Corcino, and Villarreal. I suppose Chapman could be a wildcard there still, but I’ll believe that when I see it.
I’d have to imagine Bronson’s swan song is approaching. Dude seems like he appreciates life beyond baseball, would be able to fill the time, I think he’ll hang em up sooner than later.
I like to think that Arroyo is gonna be around long enough to see us through. Guy is a great pitcher, and a great guy. Can’t wait to see him in the postseason. Btw, I wanna see Hanigan in as many games as possible.
@Jason Linden: We play the Pirates for three games in Pit. before heading to St. Louis. So I say we send them both home and we’ll represent the Central by ourselves.
@Tom Diesman: Then you’re left with the Dodgers. Also a scary team. Of course, I fully expect the Reds to take all comers, so it really doesn’t matter.
@Jason Linden: I have been considering all these scenarios too and in the end, I don’t care who makes it if we go out and play our best Reds baseball…but for if other teams from the central do make it in (even the Cards) it might just quiet the nay sayers who nag about our weak division. If we beat them, it just makes it sweeter.
Is anyone surprised the Reds came back to win tonight’s game, after losing last night. If you are, you haven’t been paying attention. Its amazing how resilient this team has been all year long. Looking forward to a win tomorrow. Go Reds!! Adios Amigos.

@Larry1980: How about 9-1 or 7-2 or even 12-0. The bullpen needs a stress free day also….
@OhioJim: How about 5 straight games with the Reds pounding out a 4+ run victory to give Chapman a week off to regather his utter dominance?
Good luck to the Blaze as they start their playoff against Modesto tonight.

How do i watch this game?? its the MLB.tv live game of the day and I cant firgure out how to watch it…
Good God, the Reds have already given up a run.
Nevermind. I’m in.
If only we had Cozart and Stubbs batting 1-2 to get some guys on for Votto.
Is it just me or do the Astros seem scared to death to throw Joey any strikes?
Nats win…LA won so still stuck in the two spot….
@OhioJim: thats even better
I’m very positive about Ryan Hanigan.
I think marty just said Hanigan has thrown out 16 of the last 31 to try to steal on him? That seems unreal….I can’t help but think the Reds’ brass didn’t quite expect Hanigan to perform this well.

Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce
BRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCEEEEE!!!!!
Bruuuuuuuuuuuce!!!!
Apparently dude almost hit the Toyota!
Huh. I don’t think you should hit Todd Frazier.
New career high for Bruce.
brantley says it appears that he hit Super Todd on purpose?
Definitely.
Will Dusty return the favor?
Yeah, but maybe with a pitcher other than Arroyo. Might send a better statement with a harder thrower!
Yeah, like Chapman in the 9th. Karma sucks, here’s a 102 mph to the back sir.
Lol, Marty thinks it was on purpose. Hopefully Frazier’ll make him pay for it on purpose. And it sounds like Dusty was about to say something
My bad, cowboy

That’s awesome, welcome and enjoy the fun.
welcome!
Welcome to the fun from another newbie sir!
I get all the credit for Jay Bruce getting hot, I said the Reds should trade him, and it clearly motivated him.
Did anyone happen to see how many pop flys Votto has had in the last 3 years? It’s probably the most insane stat that I’ve ever seen.
I didn’t see the exact stat, though I thought he didn’t have any all of last year nor so far this year. But that doesn’t seem possible …

Looks like Bad Bronson today.
@JAMinPA: Welcome aboard. My 3yo is also very pro Reds. It’s great.
I think Todd will plunk someone from third.
@RedForever: You are a bolt of sunshine.
Bronson’s been fine today. Twice many strikes as balls.
Brewers 2-0 bottom 2
@RedForever: we got a ways to go.
@JAMinPA: Welcome aboard
Phillips!
BP disaster for the AAAstros!
Homeruns? Awesome. BP and Bruce? Awesome. Reds? Awesome.
Dat Dude BP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BP!!!!!
Wait, they’re allowed to get Votto out? I thought that was against the rules. Oh well.
As per the prophecy, Votto will now hail fire and brimstone upon the infidels
@Tourniquette: …or maybe just shards of broken bats?
There’s a coach in the dugout that looks like he could be Johnny Benches twin, who is that?
@JAMinPA:
They’ve gotta have those in the bible too somewhere, right? Like the “unknown” plague of Egypt?
This Dominguez character is playing kryptonite.
Baseball! It is a fun game!
Yes!! DP!
Anybody at the game tonight? Heard it was pretty cold out there.
That Double play was poetry in motion. Nicely done indeed.
Jac(soft j) Bru no yac? I’m confused.
Throw in Cozart for Valdez in the postseason, and this is like a super-sayon lineup! Can’t wait to see what our guys can do! Btw, just found this:

Brewers up 3 to 1 on the Cardinals in the top of the 4th
@Tourniquette: Thought I heard Dusty on pre-game say Drew gets start tomorrow.
I <3 Reds
Whenever the Reds have a lead, I feel so relaxed. Such a nice change from a few years ago.
AMEN!!
When I see the Marshall-Broxton-Chapman thing happening, I usually sit back, relax, and watch the fun. I love watching this years team man.
@jas_428:
I didn’t hear that, but you’re probably right. They did say that it was only a temporary benching. DatDude with another hit. BP is just a fun player to watch.

Suspect swing call there…
@BenL: Marty agrees with you… he was flumoxed Heisey swung at that.
@JAMinPA: I think almost all of us thought that. Given his age, last year just had all the trappings of a peak season. He’s really de-emphasized homers though, and much to his benefit. Probably Jay Bruce, because apparently he’s got muscles that nobody can see.
I’ll go unconvential with Brandon Phillips… I’m banking on the fact he could stop the fight by making people laugh and relax, thus saving me from getting roughed up in the first place. I shouldn’t be in a bar fight.
@Matt WI: Chris Welsh also
@JAMinPA: That’s what you’ve gotta love about this team though, they defy expectations all the time.
Cozart has an oblique strain, so it will be a while till he is back…
This is MLB.comTV’s free game of the night. I don’t have cable and am usually a bar watcher/Marty listener. It’s so much fun to watch our team play.
Agreed. Especially when it happens in mid-October
@Jared Wynne: You’re lucky man, I’m in blackout range even though it’s free…
@Jared Wynne: agreed
Double play! Sweet. Good work.
Hey! Valdez made a SS play!
Sweet!
Sometimes, things go wrong. Tonight, things are going right. I like these double play things.
@RedManFan: I’d take Votto. He would carefully calculate the correct approach before dispatching seven opponents with a single blow.
Failing that, Rolen.
What do you say now Reds? Lets get some insurance runs and breathe easy.
That’s what I’m talking about, let’s put up a 4 or 5 spot and quit letting these guys hang in there.
I have said it many times on Twitter, I will say it here now: Joey Votto is totally dreamy.
Votto needs to go deep. For my own sanity.
How about that, Maestro Arroyo orchestrated another double play. 2-1 Reds bot 6th
Mr. Votto, you are the man. Apparently more powerful in the majors than the minors, how awesome is that!
Ball is finding Heisey tonight.
I’m Joseph Daniel Votto. I’m better than you even when I’m broken. We call that big league, baby.
I just realized Jay Bruce has 70 extra base hits this year. He might finish with 80. That’s phenomenal.
Going with Latos, because I think he’s nuts. Plus, all of those tattoos!
Bruce getting the Votto treatment.
Now it’s payback time.
Let’s go Super Todd!
Astros elects to pitch to the slumping Todd Frazier. Never thought I would ever hear those words.
How dare they!
Todd Frazier is hurting for some hits right now.
Pinch hit Meso. Let him go yard.
I love me a base clogger!
Slumping all the way to a walk! SUPPPER TODD!
C’mon Hanny your due for HR
HANIGAN!!!!!!!!!!! By the way first time commenting (and a positive comment as well) at the request of Jason.
HanAGAIN!
See ya, Bud. Have fun in the AL
Go go gadget arms!
pinch hit
Oh no, the Asstros are replacing the SP…so who’s setting up the Tball?
Ha! I just assumed Bronson was on deck…silly me. Why would I have ever thought that??
Kind of wishing Dusty would insert Didi here… offensively it’s at worst a wash, and then consider it a defensive replacement for the rest of the game if it stays close.
Regard the nonsense about the Reds not hitting with RISP that Marty was griping about a few minutes ago. Reds OPS is .745 for the season. .734 with RISP.
Yeah, that’s nonsense.
734 RISP? Huh?
It ain’t a HR buts its just what the Doctor ordered, get a run when you can. Nice piece of hitting by Hanny.
Hannigan is the ManAgain!
@Jason Linden: How does that compare to the rest of the league?
whens the last time Valdez went deep? 1990?
Ondrusek? Bring in Cingrani!
I’d love to see Valdez come through big here!
Valdez actually hanging around? Weird.
My 4-yr old is watching with me, but finds these long at-bats a bit boring…we don’t have lengthy at-bats in Mario baseball!
Not a hit. Does the job. Things are going right tonight.
Mamouth!
Wow. Surprisingly great AB by Valdez.
Alright! We’ll take it. This feels much better. Engage cruise control.
That’s got to be the shortest double I’ve ever seen (double, error, still 2 bases)
That wasn’t off a bunt and error throw
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! Valdez, your bad luck just reversed itself sir!
Just what Valdez intended to do!!
2 rbi on a 2 foot hit. Way to go Valdez!
good squeeze
Valdez scorched that ball in the gap….oh wait
Did Arroyo do a hair care product commercial earlier today?
Just because it’s hilarious: http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/1265700/Arroyo_Dreads.jpg
Remember that last time Arroyo got a HR after review? I’m convinced he’s Barry Bonds now.
Cin. Gran. I.
Ummm…did Valdez just hit a ball into his own jersey? Because those are some intangibles right there!
@JAMinPA: NL is .731 with RISP. So Reds are almost exact;y average.
BP’s gonna turn on one. Again.
Maybee we should keep quiet about Valdez for a little bit.
Seriously, this pitcher is about to hurt somebody. Get him out.
no strikes yet
Phillips looking a little unhappy about all the pitches up and in
The Astros pitchers ain’t throwing those up and in pitches by accident.

@Sergeant2: Oh I’m not sure… that would be the only pitch he had solid control of if he’s throwing up on purpose.
5-1 Reds top 7th
@hermanbates: I could mostly get on board with that. Do want some power on the bench if you can get it, though.
This game is over unless Bronson implodes.
4-1 Brew Crew over the Birds, top of 7. Excellent.
Chances of AAA squad out for Cueto tomorrow?
@rfay00: It’d only be fair to the Astros.
Solid 7th by Bronson. Rock on.
What is Bronson’s contract status? Is he back next year?
@rfay00: While I believe it will happen, salary limitations won’t be a big reason, will it? They had roughly 8 million left on the table at the start of the year, that new ESPN TV deal gives everyone more money and the uptick in attendance, they should have plenty of cap.

I believe Bailey, Leake, and Latos are all arbitration eligible…could be wrong.
Cowboy called it, these are are last games against you, why continue to hit us?
@JAMinPA: Yup. Under contract 1 more year.
@Tourniquette: My wife is a Yankees fan & that was usually Arroyo’s style in those NYY/BOS playoff games. Ever since then, he’s always had the nickname “cornroyo” in our house.
*our…sorry my grammar has sucked all night btw
Votto’s OBP since he came back is .750
Did Votto get hurt?
@Greg Dafler: You married a Yankees fan…tisk tisk
Is JV all right, I am not watching it on tv
@Greg Dafler: That’s pretty hilarious. Now he looks more like Kurt Cobain!
Apologies to any RN veterans who’ve heard that story before.
@RedForever: Nah, just having him call it a night.
I believe Arroyo contract has deferred money if he stay with Reds but becomes undeferred if he gets traded.
I’m watching football so I’m just keeping up on GameCast.
Thanks.
@Greg Dafler: You are correct.
But he’s obviously re-established trade value this year if the Reds consider going that direction.
Brewers load the bases with no outs but can’t score. Still lead 4-1 but could have put it away
@Greg Dafler: I’d keep him. You know he won’t get hurt and he’ll throw a ton of innings. That’s very valuable.
Definitely keep him. He’s definitely proven that he deserves it.
Yeah, Arroyo is signed up for 6.5M next season with 15M deferred through 2021. If traded, the 15M in deferrals are voided and paid up-front. So he isn’t going anywhere. I suppose Chapman could be a wildcard there still, but I’ll believe that when I see it.
Man, when Marshall’s breaking stuff is a go (and when the ump can see it for a strike), he’s darn near unhittable.
I’d have to imagine Bronson’s swan song is approaching. Dude seems like he appreciates life beyond baseball, would be able to fill the time, I think he’ll hang em up sooner than later.
Brewers leading 4-2 top of 8th now.
35,018 turned out for tonight’s titanic struggle, 35,018.
I like to think that Arroyo is gonna be around long enough to see us through. Guy is a great pitcher, and a great guy. Can’t wait to see him in the postseason. Btw, I wanna see Hanigan in as many games as possible.
If the Reds win and Cards lose tonight and the Reds play .500 for the rest of the year, Cards would need to go 21-2 TO TIE!
I love Cincinnati. I love that statement even more.
I’m just hoping we get to play spoiler the last 3 games of the season in St. Louis to ensure that they don’t make the playoffs this year.
You know, as much fun as that would be…I think I would rather beat them in the playoffs.
Hanigan is our Irish B**A**, only because I don’t know how far I’m allowed to go. Sorry RL, but not wanting to get banned just yet.
Valdez vs Valdez!
Valdez wins that matchup!
@Tom Diesman: That would be great.
Nice AB and first ML hit for Rodriguez.
Congrats H-Rod!
(and shame on you Valdez)
@JAMinPA: I’d rather beat the Cards, but I’d rather face the Pirates.
Congradulations Rodriquez!
Congrats H-Rod.
@Jason Linden: I can agree with that.
drama in st. louis….beltran pinch hitting with 2 out, tying run at second…..
How about Congratulations Rodriguez!
@Jason Linden: We play the Pirates for three games in Pit. before heading to St. Louis. So I say we send them both home and we’ll represent the Central by ourselves.
BP at the top of the lineup is going to really pay off the rest of the year if this keeps up.
@Tom Diesman: Then you’re left with the Dodgers. Also a scary team. Of course, I fully expect the Reds to take all comers, so it really doesn’t matter.
oy vey, not my hometown guy’s day
@Jason Linden: I have been considering all these scenarios too and in the end, I don’t care who makes it if we go out and play our best Reds baseball…but for if other teams from the central do make it in (even the Cards) it might just quiet the nay sayers who nag about our weak division. If we beat them, it just makes it sweeter.
When we clinch, I think Dusty should do a somersault out of the dugout.
Armamis just went yard for Milwaukee! (Solo)
@Matt WI: Sorry. Aramis R.
@hermanbates: that would be epic
C’mon Shrek slam the door shut, you can do it.
Gotta love that Aramis Ramirez. Solo shot for the Brewers, up 5-3 in top of 9 in St. Louis.
Why was Votto removed?
6-3 Brewers. Looking like a 2 game magic number kind of night!
@dn4192: It was premeditated, don’t worry. He’s fine.
Ballgame!
I very much enjoyed hanging out with you all tonight. It’s going to be a busy fall for me, but I’ll spend evenings here whenever I can.
Magic number now 15. Should be 14 any minute.
I think I need to change my vote on when the Reds might be clinching the Central ….
Lets keep it up Reds! Cueto on the mound tomorrow…I like the sound of that!
Is anyone surprised the Reds came back to win tonight’s game, after losing last night. If you are, you haven’t been paying attention. Its amazing how resilient this team has been all year long. Looking forward to a win tomorrow. Go Reds!! Adios Amigos.
Can we all now agree…Bronson still a quality pitcher…
Nice how DISH only blacks out 3 hours of regional sports channels for baseball games…am able to watch Brewers/Cardinals bottom of the 9th on ch 418 in Indy.
But no NBC…
When did Axford shave off his facial hair?
Looks like they’re also showing 9th inning brewers/cardinals on MLB network.
@Greg Dafler: I think it was a while ago (maybe a month). MLB.com had an article on it even…strange how much we care about such stupid things
SS Devin Lohman homered in the bottom of the first to give the Bakersfield Blaze a 1-0 lead in their first playoff game.
Brewers win!
Cards lose. Magic number is 14.
14
I’ve cheated by waiting until the end of tonite’s game to cast my vote for when the Reds clinch. Time to think about it.
Way to beat the Asstros Reds, I heart you.
I voted at the beginning of the evening for the Cubs series.
