CHAMPS!

Down on the Farm

Games Played on 09/04/12

Minor League Player of the Day: Billings RF Jeff Gelalich went 2-4 with a double and triple. The 21 year old was a 1st round pick in this year’s draft, but has struggled in his first professional season going .236/.329/.370/.699 at Billings.

AAA

The Bats season is over…thank goodness. Horrible year for the Reds AAA team, as they finished last in the Western Division, 38 games out of first, with a 51-93 record, losing 9 of their last 10 and 7 in a row.

AA

Pensacola finished their inaugural season with a 34-35 second half record, finishing 3rd in the South Division, 4 games out of first place. They had the exact same record in the first half, finishing 3rd, but were 5.5 games out.

High A

The Blaze won the first half title by 3 games over San Jose, with a 41-29 record. They finished third in the second half with a 31-29 record, 8 games out.

Bakersfield has a bye in the first round of the California League Playoffs, awaiting the winner of San Jose and Modesto.

Low A

The Dragons finished last in their division in the first half, going 30-40, 17.5 games out of first. The second half wasn’t much kinder, they again finished last, going 30-38, 11 games out and finished last again.

Rookie

Helena 11 – Billings 5

The Mustangs loss dropped them back into a first place time with Missoula, who they play in the final two games of the season.

Jeff Gelalich was 2-4 with a double/triple and Robert Maddox homered for the second day in a row.

Jordan Remer was the only Mustang pitcher to throw a scoreless inning.

AZL Reds – Season Completed

The AZL Reds finished the season last in the AZL Central with a 18 – 38 record and 16.5 games back of first place. Jonathan Reynoso was the Red’s lone player named to the 2012 Arizona League All-Star Team. Reynoso, a 19 year old RH hitting OF, hit .311/.328/.411/.739 in 190 AB with 30 SB.

Chris Valaika and Jordan Smith were removed from the 40 man roster. They both had the proverbial cup-o-coffee in the bigs, but it looks like that may be all for their career with the Reds.

@BloodyHo: That’s kind of a shame. Valaika, imo, played well when he got his shot with the Reds. But you could tell, it would take more from him than it would from somebody they already liked better, kind of like Frazier. Frazier’s had to be a ROY candidate to get anyone in the organization to “like” him or to give him a real chance. I think Valaike could have been a decent utility guy in the organization. He definitely would have been better than Valdez this year. Then again, Janish would have been better too. Why did we TRADE for Valdez again?

Yeah, I just posted about this in the post-game thread. Really surprised to see both these guys removed from the 40-man roster, as I figured both of them would be September call-ups.

Who did we put on the 40-man to take their places?

About Louisville, woof. What an epic disaster of a season. Just a perfect storm of all the kids like Cozart, Frazier, Mesoraco, and Heisey all being good enough to be on the major-league roster, and the real young studs like Hamilton, Cingrani, and Corcino not being quite ready for AAA just yet.

You had to know it was going to be bad when they signed Brett Tomko back around the start of the year.

  • One of the 40 spots must have went to Cingriani, not sure about the other one.

Just checked, the Reds only have 39 on the 40 man. Wonder who the mystery man will be to fill it out?

  • BloodyHo

@RiverCity Redleg: I agree, I thought Valaika aquitted himeself well when given the chance at the ML level and both he and Janish would have been good utility IF on the ML roster. You almost get the feeling that the Reds see the grass as always greener somewhere else besides their own back yard. Enough with the verteran aquisitions just because they are verterans. Give the prospects a real chance to prove themselves. If Super Todd had not physically knocked down that wall, his ML career would never have materialized with the Reds.

  • BloodyHo

@rfay00: I thought the other roster spot went to Villareal, but I guess he was already on the 40 man roster. You are correct, the 40 man roster seems to have an open slot available.

Despite a terrible season for the Louisville Bats I think their fans have a lot to be excited about for next year as far as young prospects. Billy Hamilton, Daniel Corcino, and Toni Cingrani seem likely to play there sometime next season. Maybe Ryan LaMarre or Tucker Barnhart later in the season.

Paul Janish, he now has a .217 batting average in 1034 career MLB at bats. A .191 average this season with the Braves. Would that have been an improvement over Wilson Valdez? I think Janish’s value has increased in the eyes of many Reds fans now that he’s gone. Was trading a light hitting middle infielder who wore out his welcome for Todd Redmond really a problem? I don’t think so…

  • They might have just made the move so that those players could get on with their career in another organization. There may be no move to add a 40th player until after the playoffs, when the organization will have to add another round of draftees to protect them from the rule V draft.

Otherwise, for just the one 40-man spot needed, they could have moved Negron to the 60-day DL.

    @Greg Dafler:
Won’t the free agent players’ roster spots open up before the Rule 5 draft anyway?

I guess you’re right that they might have just wanted to give Jordan Smith and Chris Valaika a chance to play elsewhere in September. That was nice of them. Maybe we can see him pitch for the Astros.

  • @redsfanman: Yes, but I don’t know offhand what the number of free agents are vs. the number of minor leaguers they want to protect. Plus, they’ll need to replace some of those free agents with other 25-man roster caliber free agents.
