Game Thread: Reds vs. Cardinals (2012.08.24)

Did I ever tell you that my kids used to call them “the stinky Cardinals”? Good times, good times.

Okay, this is a pretty big series. Cincinnati has built up a bit of a lead in the NL Central, but the Cardinals made a furious comeback last year and ended up winning the World Series. The Reds can’t coast all the way through September. so winning two of three this weekend is imperative.

A sweep? Probably too much to ask for, but it might bury the Cardinals.

Gonna be a fun weekend. Discuss the game here. Go Redlegs.

***By the way, the game is on MLB Network.

Over the past month, Lynn has an ERA well over 5.00 and hasn’t pitched more than 6 innings in those 5 games. Over the past month, Latos has an ERA a little bit over 1.00 and hasn’t pitched less than 7 innings in those 5 games.

The lineup is standard except with Frazier, 6th, hitting ahead of Rolen, 7th. Let’s hope everyone has the heads screwed on straight now and is ready to flash some leather.

    Cozart SS
    Stubbs CF
    Phillips 2B
    Ludwick LF
    Bruce RF
    Frazier 1B
    Rolen 3B
    Hanigan C
    Latos P

  • Vottoeroticism

Anyone else paying attention to all this Dodgers-Red Sox absurdity? It must be nice to play in a big market. Sheesh.

  • BloodyHo

This weekend really hurts to not be sitting in GABP looking forward to a week-long bout of laryngitis next week, especially with the Larkin ceremonies and recognition taking place.

  • BloodyHo

@Vottoeroticism: Haven’t got an inkling what absurdity you are referring to, but it certainly sounds like it’s got ESPN nonsense written all over it.

  • Vottoeroticism

@BloodyHo: Red Sox close to sending Gonzalez, Crawford and Beckett to the Dodgers.

  • Larry1980

The Reds are pitching the same pitchers they pitched the last time the Cards came to GABP, Latos,Leake,Bailey. Leake and Bailey were great those 2 games lets hope for it again. They have to win 2 out of 3, no repeat for the cards.

That hasn’t been a good thing latly.Seen where Joey V has been hitting in the cage and taking ground balls. Thats some good news!

  • Ground crew all wearing white Reds jersies with Larkin name and #11 on the back.

  • Mwv

Everyone get your Chapman Rolls ready for when we win this tonight.

  • MikiLove

I know this isn’t going to be popular, but I feel the Cards are going to be tough. They have been playing pretty good lately, and they have their backs against the wall. I also bet they’re pretty angry about the last series, and may take advantage on the fact Leake and Bailey have been struggling lately. I’m predicting they take 1 out of 3. Let my burning at the stake begin!

I don’t think anyone here thinks this will be an easy series. I still think we will win it 2-1 though. Our guys have stepped up in big series all year. Also we have Todd. How are they going to stop that? You can’t.

  • MikiLove

However, David Freese did say, “I don’t think those guys are really going to slow down too much. There’s other ways to get into the playoffs, but the division is still something we’re striving for and we’re going to try to win as many games as we can.” So maybe, they have lost some fire in their belly.

  • per14

Listening to Dusty and Marty. It’s hilarious, frankly, (and sad) how Dusty takes every opportunity he can to chip away at Marshall.

  • hydeman

This is a statement series for the Reds. 2 out of 3 or a sweep tells the babys to start playing for the WC. if it goes the other way then its game on for the division. Sept. is a long month and there’s 8) gonna be ups and downs, but we can drive a big nail in the baby’s coffin tonight! Go Reds!

  • RedForever

    Here is the scenario.

Reds sweep, Cards are 10 out and done.
Reds win 2 of 3, Cards 8 out and basically done.
Reds win 1 of 3, Cards 6 out and on life support but still breathing.
Cards sweep, Cards 4 out and are feeling good and Reds are reeling.

  • Listening to Dusty and Marty. It’s hilarious, frankly, (and sad) how Dusty takes every opportunity he can to chip away at Marshall.

He’s a players manager for certain players. I still wonder if he holds some grudge (consciously or subconsciously) against Marshall from their Chicago days.

    • LVW

I doubt it- they were just there for Marshall’s rookie year together.

  • LVW

Latos needs to dominate like the 1/2 we got him to be and set the tone for the rest of the series. He hasn’t been that great vs the WLBs this year. They give Lynn 6 runs a start on average.

  • Mwv

    Great play by Bruce.

  • I was just looking to see which Reds have stepped it up since Votto went on the DL

One of the 1st things I noticed

Hanigan has a .842 OPS since Votto left
But when he plays in a game (since Votto left) the team is 24-7

  • RedForever

    Bruce made that look easy.

  • wildwestLV

Not only did he save the HR, check the replay, Bruce probably saved that little kid from getting blasted by that ball. Great play.

  • Mwv

Reds came to play tonight. Rawr.

  • Here have been the bats that have picked it up in Votto’s absence
OPS since Votto went on the DL

    1.111 Ludwick
    .973 Rolen
    .941 Bruce
    .897 Frazier
    .872 Paul
    .842 Hanigan

  • RedForever

    I’d run Phillips here.

  • RedForever

    Brewers up 2-0 on Pirates.

  • SFredsfan

Love to see Latos shut it down for a few innings early. Let the bats have a goat this guy and build a lead. Great first inning!

  • LVW

Cards called up a righty reliever and sent down a lefty reliever for this series.

    Latos- shutdown inning!

  • LVW

Latos is not exactly Cuetoesque when it comes to shutdown innings.

  • RedForever

Gonna be that kind of game. Reds just need to keep putting up great at-bats and put runs up.

  • Sergeant2

Better late then never. I’m all buckled in, got my defibrillator warmed and within reach. Did I mention beer, got plenty of beer. If anyone wants to borrow my jump starter (defibrillator) no problem. Go Reds Go!!!!!

  • mthomas5810

I am just glad neither Mendoza twin is in the lineup tonight

  • jas_428

    great Scott…Rolen!

  • Mwv

Oi, bet Hanigan wants that first pitch back. That was a cookie.

  • Mwv

Nicely done, good sharply hit ball there.

  • Sergeant2

Has Frazier crossed the plate twice already in this game?

  • jas_428

does anyone who know who is calling game with Costas?

  • Mwv

Crazy. How about that? Go Latos!

  • mthomas5810

    Butcher Boy!

  • LVW

5 game hit streak for Latos. Brew crew up 2-0 after 3.

  • vicferrari

What is Latos Batting the past month or so? He has really picked up Leake’s slack.

  • mthomas5810

Latos looked a power hitter when he is at the plate

  • mthomas5810

Larkin is in the booth on Fox Sports Ohio

  • Mwv

Barry is so good behind the mic even. That man can do it all.

  • mthomas5810

    Phillips, Ludwick, Bruce coming up…..

  • Mwv

BP is really on tonight, once he gets 2 strikes on him he’s looking to just poke the ball away for a hit.

  • Richard Fitch

Love it when BP goes the other way. Twice now tonight.

  • Mwv

Did we just get into the Cards pen in the third inning?

    • Richard Fitch

Did we just get into the Cards pen in the third inning?

Just shows how important this game is to them. They can’t allow this game to get away from them.

      • vicferrari

Just shows how important this game is to them. They can’t allow this game to get away from them.

Shows how much confidence they have in a 13 game winner. Say what you will about Baker, where he excels is establishing these rolls. Cards are going nowhere without Lynn.

        • Richard Fitch

Say what you will about Baker, where he excels is establishing these rolls.

I don’t know about that. Baker has made it clear that Heisey’s role is as a bench player. Hanigan’s role is in the 8th spot. Marshall’s role is as a LOOGY. Stubby’s role is a speedster at the top of the lineup.

Seems to me the way he pigeonholes people into roles is a weakness.

          • vicferrari

We are talking about an 8th hitter role and a LOOGEY roll(I do not agree with Baker on either BTW)and the most debatable Heisey over Stubbs, my point is the major roles closer, starting pitchers, pinch hitters, stars, I think Bailey, Latos, Chapman, Bruce, Cozart, Hanigan even have excelled in the rolls that Baker has provided…
I am starting to drink heavily and trying to find something positive to say about Baker, I was so upset after yesterdays game and I do not want to be be another Fire Dusty troll

  • mthomas5810

Quick hook on Lynn by Matheny. It shows how much the Cardinals value this game

  • vicferrari

This WLB lineup is pretty impressive, their eighth hitter would be an upgrade almost anywhere in the Red’s line-up. I haven’t looked at the pitching overall but they have 3 13 game winners… I cannot believe they are this far out and they have a brutal road trip, they go 3 and 9, 4 and 8, they almost cannot recover. Pretty bad when they need to sweep The Reds in August just to have a glimer of hope. Let’s pull out the daggers and brooms and wipe these WLB from the conversation in September.

  • mthomas5810

Jay needs a little better at bat there

  • vegastypo

    FraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaSURE

  • Mwv

Todd Frazier. There is nothing he cannot do.

  • LVW

Way to pick up your teammate SuperTodd!

  • per14

You could argue, I think, that the Cards are a “better” team than the Reds–and trust me, I’d hate to have to make that argument! But their run differential is considerably better than the Reds’. They’ve won a lot fewer games than their run totals would suggest they should have.

  • per14

I ain’t saying they are better! Just elaborating on prior comments.

  • mthomas5810

    Todd…..Frazier……

  • CharlotteNCRedsFan

I’m sorry, Todd Frazier is the best active position player on the Reds’ squad. There I said it. If he sits at all when Votto comes back, it’s a crime.

  • Mwv

Way to leg that out Rolen! Pile ‘em on.

  • CharlotteNCRedsFan

Let’s just blow them out of the water here in the 3rd so I can watch a movie with my wife.

  • mthomas5810

This just shows how tough our offense can be when we have Frazier/Rolen hitting in the 6 and 7 holes…as opposed to the two individuals from last night

  • RedLegHerrm

Rare, inopportune K for Hanigan right there.

    • vicferrari

Rare, inopportune K for Hanigan right there.

I will take it, he has earned the right to not produce considering the burdens. The one position I am more concerned about than a starter getting more than a 100 pitches, is catcher. I read that one of Sparky Anderson’s biggest regrets is teh way he worked Johnny Bench. I really think Hanigan needs a break more than Phillips or Rolen. Having a great 8th hitter is not the biggest priority in the world, Navarro starts tomorrow right?

      • Richard Fitch

The one position I am more concerned about than a starter getting more than a 100 pitches, is catcher.

Yeah, but hasn’t Mes been catching twice every time thru the rotation. Hanny must have had more rest than most catchers this season, yeah?

        • vicferrari

Yeah, but hasn’t Mes been catching twice every time thru the rotation.Hanny must have had more rest than most catchers this season, yeah?

My point all the more, Hanigan has never been a regular, I seriously doubt he has ever started more than 4 in a row, can he be expected to all of sudden catch 7-10 straight games?
On a side note, can he be a legit Gold Glove candidate? (Never seen this brought up)

  • vicferrari

In April I thought Frazier was underrated, he got called up and I thought the one handed/no handed homers and saving the choking victims were a good May story. By June I suspected his legend was getting a little overhyped but figured he would not be a big drop off for Votto in July. Now August I do not know what to think, only a manager can figure out to hold him back. ROY is just a stepping stone, will he just be a good story or…

  • LVW

That will come back to haunt us tonite……………..I can feel it.

  • RedLegHerrm

We’ve had some opportunities to blow this happen and haven’t done so. Great start, but you need to pile on these guys when you get the chance. There’s been too many “what-if” moments thus far.

  • per14

“Seems to me the way he pigeonholes people into roles is a weakness.”

Heck–it’s his PRIMARY weakness. In his world, the SS bats lead-off. The CF bats second. (Or vice versa.) The catcher bats 8th. The rookie sits even if he’s the best playing player on the roster. He pigeonholes his player into that role regardless of their skills. Why? Because that’s what the platonic form of a gritty baseball team looks like.

  • per14

Man, even Brantley is killing Bruce on the radio.

  • I hope that Hanigan K doesn’t come back and bite ‘em on the arse, like last night when they didn’t get the big hit to break the game open when they had the chance…

  • Sergeant2

    @Richard Fitch: LOOGY, now that’s funny. :arrow: :D :D

  • Richard Fitch

Latos pointing to the ground, saying to himself, “down, down” after throwing that warning track pitch to Holiday.

  • I-71_Exile

I love Hannigan, but that was an example of him batting in a high leverage situation with pitcher that actually needed to get him out.

  • mthomas5810

Saw a rumor where the Dodgers and Red Sox are going to swap rosters. What is up with that?

    • vegastypo

Saw a rumor where the Dodgers and Red Sox are going to swap rosters. What is up with that?

apparently it started with the Dodgers trying to block the Giants from getting Gonzalez

      • CharlotteNCRedsFan

@vegastypo: Dodger’s are going to need name tags in the clubhouse.

        • vegastypo

@vegastypo: Dodger’s are going to need name tags in the clubhouse.

Last I heard, it was Gonzalez, Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto leaving the Red Sox, and two of the names I heard of Dodgers were James Loney and Ronald Belisario. Should be interesting who else goes Boston’s way.

      • vicferrari

apparently it started with the Dodgers trying to block the Giants from getting Gonzalez

Cannot a team block through waivers. Do the reds have this option?

        • Cannot a team block through waivers. Do the reds have this option?

all players after the trade deadline have to go through waivers
any team lower in the standings can make a claim on those players, essentially blocking a trade to a team higher in the standings

The Reds having the 2nd best record in the NL can only block deals to Washington

The rumor is that the Red Sox and San Francisco were talking a deal for Gonzo but LA made a claim to block a deal and started talking with the Sox about a deal

SF has been talking about trying to make a deal to replace Melkey’s bat in the lineup.

    • vared

Saw a rumor where the Dodgers and Red Sox are going to swap rosters. What is up with that?

All I know is if the Sox are parting with Gonzalez I’m really glad the Reds got Votto locked up last year.

      • Richard Fitch

All I know is if the Sox are parting with Gonzalez I’m really glad the Reds got Votto locked up last year.

Really. They would have come after Joey with the Federal Reserve Bank, a KFC franchise and a brewery.

  • LVW

Gotta close the deal there, Matty!

  • steveschoen

While I would rather have a huge piece of Cardinal pie, I can take it bit by bit.

  • CharlotteNCRedsFan

Man, that was two sorry ABs.

  • jas_428

Kelly was a closer in College, at either USC or San Diego St. Anyway where ever it was, he set records as a Closer during his College career.

  • wildwestLV

When Latos looks better at the plate than Stubbs, Dusty should give Drew a day off.

  • wildwestLV

Although, I actually think Stubbs has had much better at bats recently (i.e. working the count), but seems to get rung up more on strikes than others in the lineup (like the pitch inside he had to move away from, to avoid getting hit, last at bat).

  • jas_428

@wildwestLV: Dusty has told Stubbs to not worry about his hitting, just focus on defense…for three years. Any hits are a bonus. He could bat .200 and .275obp and still be asset to team. Do I have the talking points correct?

  • CharlotteNCRedsFan

See where the Indians might part ways with the oft-wounded Grady Sizemore. Wonder if that guy could ever make it back on the diamond. Might be worth a look see at the right price? Maybe a similar situation to Josh Hamilton all those many years ago.

  • mthomas5810

I am a big believer in Drew Stubbs, despite his deficiencies at the plate at times. Our team is better when he is in the lineup. You can’t teach that kind of speed

  • Richard Fitch

@vicferrari: The gold glove is often a popularity contest. Hasn’t the Cardinal catcher owned it lately? Hanny’s not on anybody’s radar screen nationally.

  • Mwv

Haha, that was a strange hit for Bruce.

  • Richard Fitch

    Jay Bruce is Reds Hot!

  • mthomas5810

Wow, that was the slowest ground ball base hit through the infield in the history of MLB

  • Mwv

Todd Frazier. He cannot be stopped. He cannot be reasoned with. He’s an animal.

  • CharlotteNCRedsFan

How did Frazier place that ball just so?

  • Richard Fitch

But Todd Frazier is en fuego.

  • Mwv

Yeah baby! Scott getting it done!

  • CharlotteNCRedsFan

    Almost movie time.

  • Richard Fitch

    Watchin Scotty Grow

  • LVW

C’mon Hanigan- don’t leave 2 more on here!

  • vicferrari

This game is turning onto a wishful thinking game, Latos goes 7 or 8, reds up in the 9th by 5 or 6 bring on Lecure or Simon to get some confidence.

Tomorrow the bullpen is gassed and The Reds get to Garcia early Chapman does not pitch until Sunday to get some work and the save.

  • jas_428

Reds fans always seem quiet. Are they louder than they seem from tv coverage? Many lulls even during rallies. I figured on huge volume vs Cards and Larkin weekend.

  • wildwestLV

Why was Latos green lighted to swing at any of that?

  • BRM5

Reds have been on the verge of busting this all night.

  • Mwv

Oh man I thought he had that one.

  • LVW

Let’s leave the bases loaded again; YEAH!! 3 run lead is MOOOOOORE than enough.

  • steveschoen

A little more Cardinal pie there.

  • Antiproton

Nice at bat by Cozart, thought that was going to be a grand slam for a second there.

  • CharlotteNCRedsFan

I’m counting on you guys to get the boys through tonight. Enjoy!

  • vicferrari

Latos do what Latos does and tomorrow score all the unnecessary runs, please do not make Dusty make a decision tonite

  • Mwv

Latos robbed himself of an out there.

  • BRM5

Big half right here. Cover first Latos!

  • LVW

Holliday HR makes it 5-4 and now all bets are off.

What’s the score now and who’s losing?

  • Sergeant2

Can you imagine how scary good this Reds team would be if they ever improve their RISP numbers. Don’t get me wrong, the Reds are good now. I’m just saying.

  • BRM5

Latos missed his location by a mile there. Hanigan low and in, Latos high and outside.

  • George Culver

Get someone up now. When Latos gets tired he leaves the ball up. Lucky it’s not 5-4 already. And a close one there.

  • DAMN….missed opportunties, a bad defensive play…hit, and a long homer..tied freakin’ game…not sharp..

  • jas_428

Solid Cards lineup – no pushovers.

  • steveschoen

I’ll say it. Think maybe Maguire has been coaching Allan Craig in his “dietary supplements”?

  • Mwv

He needs to get out of there right now. He’s leaving everything up and he just looks emotional at this point. Dusty asleep all inning again.

  • RichmondRed

    Is this real life.

  • This does not bode well for momentum…for the series.. and Baker just leaves him out there…

  • jas_428

    Trout might have had it.

  • wildwestLV

We are Yadier Molina’s personal bee-yotch.

  • jas_428

And, after all that, Freese is up with his 300 avg!

  • Sergeant2

Well when you leave 8 men on base in 5 innings, bad things happen. The good news is, this Reds team doesn’t quit. I would take Latos out right now.

  • mthomas5810

I agree Latos is losing it, but what is Dusty supposed to? We don’t have 25 pitchers in our bullpen.

  • BRM5

That unraveled in a heartbeat. Positive: 4 innings of their pen which hasn’t been great.

  • RedForever

Man, let this one get away. Had a ton of chances to blow it open and let them stay in the game.

This is one the Reds really need to win. It puts a lot more pressure on the Cards and less on the Reds.

We just can’t let the Cards sweep this series.

  • wildwestLV

Actually will credit Dusty knowing to yank Latos there. Hope good bullpen shows up tonight. Cards are RELENTLESS.

    • RedForever

We haven’t seen the good bullpen in a while.

  • Richard Fitch

Latos looks like his head is about to come off.

  • LVW

Latos just can’t get it done against the one team he needs to the most.

  • jas_428

    Intolerable. No outs.

  • Sergeant2

Crap! Cue the Benny Hill theme music.

  • mthomas5810

    what a mess

  • RedForever

    This is a complete disaster.

And Simon can’t even get close to a strike.

  • wildwestLV

This is why nobody would want to face the Cardinals in a one game play-in game. Simon ist kaput.

  • RedForever

Do they have anyone who doesn’t hit .300?

  • Richard Fitch

Been awhile since I’ve seen the wheels come off this quickly.

  • wildwestLV

Somebody told the Reds this game was national.

  • mthomas5810

the Cardinals offense is by far….by far…the best in the National League

  • RedForever

I can’t believe the Reds have blown this game.

Why do I feel a sweep by the Cardinals coming?

Then they would only be 4 back. Man.

If the Reds simply play .500 the rest of the way, the Cardinals have to Cards go 26-12 to tie.

      Perspective.

And you don’t think they can DO that?

        • Richard Fitch

And you don’t think they can DO that?

What I know is that they have a much tougher schedule the rest of the way. Just this week, they have to go to Pitt and Wash. The Reds schedule remains very easy until the last week of the season.

Do you really think that the way this team has played WITHOUT Votto, they are going to play .500 WITH him?

          • steveschoen

What I know is that they have a much tougher schedule the rest of the way.Just this week, they have to go to Pitt and Wash. The Reds schedule remains very easy until the last week of the season.

Do you really think that the way this team has played WITHOUT Votto, they are going to play .500WITH him?

They practically did “with him” before “he” got hurt. What makes you think they wouldn’t do it again?

      • LVW

the Cardinals have to Cards go 26-12 to tie.

        Perspective.

kinda like they did last year?

        • Richard Fitch

kinda like they did last year?

They don’t have the same bullpen this year they did last year. They don’t have Carpenter.

          • LVW

They don’t have the same bullpen this year they did last year. They don’t have Carpenter.

They did it without Wainwright last year and they have him back and he’s pitching well; so that’s a wash. Not a significant difference between their pen last year and this year.

          • yoobee

They don’t have the same bullpen this year they did last year.

Seriously? If anything, the bullpen this year is much better. Look at their stats from last year. Their relievers were 14th in ERA in the NL and 12th in FIP. They had 26 blown saves (26!) which was second most in all of baseball.

I think you have selective memory, because their bullpen wasn’t good until the last two weeks of the season (after they traded Rasmus).

    Well done by Zack

I think that giant Larkin “11″ @ 2nd is somehow jinxing us.

    Wrong foot, Brandon

  • RedForever

Can we get Votto back tomorrow, please?

  • Sergeant2

I hope this was a wake up call for the Reds. This ain’t the Cubs, Astros and Padres they’re playing.

  • vicferrari

I cannot find a way to blame Dusty and it just makes me mad and empty. C’mon Beat these WLB

  • RedForever

One thing that the Cardinals are not doing is missing pitches. Very few swings and misses.

  • wildwestLV

    Stubbs really needs a vaycay.

Just got home from my son’s Fall Ball game followed by Skyline. A oitcher should field his position. And not have vapor lock of the brain. And not being so concerned with keeping hitters away from the outside part of the plate that he hangs curves to YM and others. Did I miss anything?

  • RedForever

    Nice at-bats there.

  • BRM5

That was a lame move by Phillips. Struck out on a ball in the dirt. Didn’t run to first. Held out his hand for Yadier to tag him out. Weak.

Molina pointed to the dirt before that pitch, letting the pitcher know that’s where he wanted it. It worked.

This Cards bullpen looks pretty fine to me.

    Yeah, the Cardinals bullpen sucks!

9 Ks in 4 innings for the Cards pen tonite.

It is stomach turning to look at his mug. And MLB Network has evidently devoted the rest of tonight’s coverage to him.

But the Reds are to wussy to actually send a message.

If you’re going to play that card, Lohse is having a better year this year than last and Westbrook’s ERA is a run better than last. So yes, a wash. Mujica is unscored upon since they acquired him.

After tonite’s loss the Cards now only have to go 25-12 if the Reds play 1 game better than .500 the rest of the year.

The offense has mailed it in tonite since Mat’s lack of mental toughness reared its ugly head again.

  • Sergeant2

Hooray! Its let ask Marty. I could use a little levity right about now.

@LVW: Fine. You obviously think the Reds won’t play much above .500, even with Votto. Enjoy the ledge.

Regardless of what happens tonight, it’s still a little too early for the Redbirds to get WHITE HOT. And, yes, they have a much heavier schedule in the next week. I don’t think the Pirates are done, just yet, and can, and will do some damage. And I don’t know any NL team (us included) who won’t get f#cked up by the Nats. So, yeah, there’s my positive post of the night. ‘Night all!

@steveschoen: You’re going Chicken Little on me, too, Steve? Wow. When the Reds have a bad game, you guys really take it hard.

I’ll just say that this is a different team than the one that Joey Votto left. They are not going to collapse. And the Cardinals are not going 26-12.

    • George Culver

@steveschoen: .They are not going to collapse. And the Cardinals are not going 26-12.

Oh, not saying it will or won’t happen. I would bet we wouldn’t collapse to 500 with Votto when he comes back. But, that doesn’t mean a thing. That’s why you still have to play the games.

Rough night for Stubbs. If the pitch is down below his belt he’s helpless.

            It screams AAA.

            • steveschoen

              It screams AAA.

That’s the thing with me. With Baker, Stubbs has been living off these little streaks he gets on followed by the huge slumps. Like when he moved to the 2 hole, Stubbs batted 382/432 for 8 games. But, then, he proceeded to bat 218/292 for the next 59 games. After a couple more games, he proceeded to bat 360/421 for 12 games. But, that included 6 games against the 2 worst pitching staffs in the NL. Since that time, Stubbs has been batting 180/219. This guy gets so much play off just his speed, to me, it’s sickening. Being demoted to the 7 hole in 2010, 200+ strikeouts last year, the debacle of this year.

I am a Reds fan. Stubbs is a Reds player, so I cheer for him. But, it is getting harder and harder everyday for me to cheer for him. Before tonight, 229/294. What does it take for Baker to see exactly what Stubbs is, another poor hitting, quick, good defender?

  • Richard Fitch

@George Culver: Sounds about right. Just wait until this team get Joey back.

  • nvilleredsfan

If the Reds come back tonight and win, that would be huge on many levels.

  • LVW

Get 2 of the 1st 3 on then let SuperTodd do the rest!

Perspective check Redsfans, just pretend Reds only up by 2 going into tonight’s game. They sixth inning does not happen, think about how fired up you would be assuming they win w/o the 6th and up by 3

I like the scenario of reality…

Most Cardinal fan would rather have Kelly in the starting rotation, and Lynn in the bullpen. Kelly is the better pitcher. Kelly was moved to the bullpen when Garcia was activated.

  • Sergeant2

That four hour plus game yesterday took its toll on the team tonight, it showed. Knowing this team they’ll win the next two, that’s just the way they roll. Go Reds Go. Adios Amigos.

  • Anybody else wonder about Dusty using Simon in that situation? It seems like Dusty hadn’t pitched him in a month and then all of a sudden he comes in last night out of necessity then he picks up to come in tonight in a key spot. Another weird move by Dusty.

  • wildwestLV

As hard as I was on Dusty last night (though he deserved it, no regrets), tonight’s loss had nothing to do with him. Or Latos. Or Simon. You CANNOT leave the bases loaded (TWICE!) to the defending WS Champs & expect a W. Tonight = Reality Check for the 2012 Cincinnati Reds. Let’s hope it’s a teachable moment. GO REDS!

@steveschoen: The biggest challenge the Reds face in the quest for the Gold Ring is overcoming Dusty’s in-game management and line-up development. Neither is of a playoff caliber. I believe this team can do it but they will have face this hurdle.

@steveschoen: The biggest challenge the Reds face in the quest for the Gold Ring is overcoming Dusty’s in-game management and line-up development.Neither is of a playoff caliber.I believe this team can do it but they will have face this hurdle.

Agreed. Dusty has shown plenty to question his in-game management skills.

However, not to sound like I am defending Dusty. But, if not him, who else? I am not sure about Francona, even though he has actually won the WS. I liked Showalter, a manager proven to have success with young teams. I like Sandberg, a good mind I believe with proven experience working with youth. But, if not Dusty, odds are, we would be getting a no-name or no-experience manager (as in no experience in the big seat).

Given that, I do believe Baker is a “serviceable” manager. Some people like to talk as if he is some sort of guru or something because of how many games he won or his MOY awards. First, if you want the good, you have to take the bad. He got let go of his previous two teams, one after leading them to the WS, the other after leading them to worse finishes each year in the division (the Cubs). A fluke? Lou stepped in and won division titles each of the first 2 seasons after taking over. A 16-22 playoff record, I believe. 5 playoff finishes in 18 seasons. I don’t see a guru of baseball or anything. I see a “serviceable” manager. It’s like how Cairo has stayed on so long; everyone could always use a “serviceable” utility guy. I do agree, Baker has done a good job with this team since Votto’s injury. But, I don’t see Baker being able to give any great influence in winning a WS. If he wasn’t able to do it with the Giants and the Cubs, that tells me it would be either a) luck, or b) the GM bringing in the players necessary to win it all. And, every once in a while, a “serviceable” utility guy is lucky enough to be on a WS winner.
