The Reds (73-47) go for a sweep of the doubleheader against the stupid Cubs (46-72). Here’s a brief primer on Reds starting pitcher Todd Redmond, who makes his first appearance in a major league game.
Todd Richard Redmond (27) is from St. Petersburg, Florida and stands 6-3/215. He was taken out of junior college in the 39th round of the amateur draft in 2004 by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Redmond has spent the last eight years in the minor leagues with the Pirates, Braves and now the Reds, the past four in AAA. The Reds acquired Redmond in a trade for Paul Janish earlier this season.
Redmond throws and bats right-handed, with a career ERA of 3.76. His career strikeout-rate has been solid at 7.4 K/9 and it has improved to over 8 this year. Redmond has shown good control throughout his career, with a 3.3 K/BB and even better this season.
Look for Redmond to be on a short leash today, with the Reds bullpen in great shape. Here’s the lineup:

With 2 Todds, the Reds are unbeatable.
Best post I’ve seen you make, kudos sir.
Sort of a bummer that the using only 5 pitchers all year comes to an end due to an act of God, but good to see this dude finally make it to the show after what seems to have been a good career in the minors, which included tossing a no-no against our AAA team.
@cuetoshuevos: welcome to the Nation!
cards up 5-3 in the 8th
Pirates going to the ninth in St. Louis trailing by two runs…………Count me among the crowd hoping the Cardinals lose 2 out of 3 in this series. Keep them out of the wild-card, as well as away from competing for the division title.
Redmond must be nervous.
that was nice of Mather to swing at the first pitch for the stupid Cubs
yow, Bucs have bases loaded, no outs, McCutchen at the plate!
Pirates have the bases packed with no one out in the ninth and down 5-3.
Valdez has no ups
Cozart snares that one, IMO.
Frazier ahead of Bruce and Rolen in the lineup. He must have graduated.
5-4, 1 out
Cards win
Kid survives the jitters.
Nice job, young man.
I don’t think Valdez knew there were two outs on that play. He almost threw the ball to first. When you are hitting .210 pay attention at least.
Phillips in a bit of a slump.
That No-hitter celebration by Gwinett seemed a little forced.
Redmond just does not look comfortable out there.
Brett Jackson finally found someone he could handle.
Looks like we may see a lot of Simon tonite.
Watching this makes me really glad we haven’t had any starters injured this year.
I dunno, he just seems nervous to me. If he got a couple starts under his belt I could see him being a decent replacement.
Goodbye baseball. Crushwick!
Ludwhack
LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDWWWWWWWWWWWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!
Crushwick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ludwick von Bam see ya! Go Reds!!!
In the last 5 minutes Aramis and Hanley Ramirez, Mayberry, Kratz, Luis Cruz, Loney, and Ludwick have all HRed.
Bruce has a lower OPS than Ludwick and Frazier. The world is strange.
The Braves are playing on the MLB network and the announcers were just saying that Paul Janish has only one error in 32 games and he has been involved in more double plays than any other SS over that time. He’s also hitting .281 over the last 18 games. Great to see him getting to play every night on a contending team.
Good for him, great guy. I hope he has fun over there.
Walking the tightrope but keeping the Reds in it. probably only get 5 out of him however.
I’l take 4. Simon can take 2, Arredondo one, Marshall one, and Broxton for the close.
yow, 71 pitches through three innings …
Hopefully those butterflies are beginning to settle down for Redmond.
Todd “Houdini” Redmond making things interesting each inning here. Luckily he’s facing the black hole that is the Cubs lineup during a double header.
I wouldn’t want him facing the Cardinals.
I would LOVE to see him facing the Cards in Game #162!
That was pathetic
Get the bullpen up, now!
Interesting little tidbit by Welch about maple wood bats. Since they break more often then ash bats, their inspected by officials before they can be used in a game. If approved they get marked with a diamond symbol so the Ump can see they been approved to be used in a game. Hope nobody dozed off while reading this.
I think maybe those butterflies might be on amphetamines.
I’ve about seen enough. Can Sam go?
Whenever I hear the broadcasters say Rizzo, my brain registers it as RZA.
I’ve seen more than enough of Redmond. Got to get him out of there now. Already one batter too late.
That should about do it for Mr. redmond.
You can see that pitch that just doesn’t sink..its that side arm breaker that just hangs…Its a good pitch when it dives. Oh Well, I hope he gets another shot
Boy howdy…If that’s the 6th best starting pitcher in this organization than we had better stay healthy the next 2 months…
Have to say, Redmond looked a lot worse than I expected. I’m sure he was understandably nervous the first inning, but no allowances after that. Poor control. Bad at fielding. Sure hope the rotation stays healthy. Hard to see Redmond in this role again, as spot starter. If I was Walt, I’d get busy on another emergency starter.
I think Jocketty said they were trying to obtain pitching depth at the deadline. i think they were trying to get another starter. Next time I’d bring up Cingrani.
Hey at least the guy can tell his Grandkids he pitched in the Majors. He’s 27 so I guess could get another opportunity.
Positive: It’s the 4th inning and we are facing Brooks Raley and the Cubs’ bullpen.
This is getting ugly. I don’t like double headers.
I do like the fact that they pulled him in an attempt to keep us in this game.
Valdez does a really good job of turning the double play, both from the SS and 2B side.
Okay. No harm, o foul. Plenty of baseball left and we are blessed in the nature of our opponent.
@cuetoshuevos: More of a bummer that he gave up 4 earned in 3 1/3. No matter, the Reds always have a chance with the Cubs.
If for whatever reason you think Cozart needs to take the second game off, fine. If you think Valdez is the only guy you have on your roster who can replace him at SS, fine. But Wilson Valdez does not have ANY business batting 2nd in a major league order.
2nd time in a row we’re making this kid look like a Cy Young candidate. We have to do this to young pitchers more than any other team.
He needs to hit Bruce. That always works.
@RedForever: Cingrani’s coming along but don’t believe that he’s on the 40 man and he’s just at AA right now. More likely, he gets a shot next year.
Time to start getting to Raley. And getting back in this.
Also, if you think Cozart can only play in one of these games, why not play him in the 2nd game with the AAA pitcher on the mound and you might need all the offense you can get instead of the game with your ace on the mound when you can probably spare a little offense?
Hard to believe that the Reds can’t hit this guy. Get right on top of the plate and dare the guy to throw inside.
How bout Dusty saying last night that the pitch that hit bruce was not on purpose? Why even ask him the ?
Wow only 15 home games left. Kinda hits home that the season is winding down.
Boy oh boy
Boy! Bruce took a horrible angle on that shot!
At least we won the first game.
The important thing now is to keep it in slam range.
I still think it takes more than 5 to win this game!
Here we go. Have to put at least one up here and we’ve got a good chance with our bullpen versus theirs.
Huh. I didn’t think Sam was available this game, wasn’t he hurt?
Willie Harris just drove in the winning run for louisville.
Who?
Heisey is due for a long one.
Come on Drew – make contact here.
Looked long enough to me.
That’s more like it Mssr. Heisey!
How is Heisey SO much better as a pinch hitter than a starter?
Is this gonna be another game where big at bats end up going to Valdez?
Mmmm.mmm…mmm…Stubbs leaving the bat on the shoulders again
Having Drew & Juan back-to-back here is difficult. to say the least.
Drew Stubbs does not know how to protect the plate at all.
Telling you, he is a #8 hitter. Miscast at the top of a line-up. Not even to mention Juan Valdez.
Wow, need to see a replay but that looked like safe at 2nd.
That was awful. How Valdez belongs in the 2 spot is just beyond me.
Now that is a horrible at-bat. Stubbs takes 4 pitches to strike out.
Stubbs got two really bad calls that AB. Both the first and third called strikes were well outside.
They were both the same pitch. A professional hitter would have swung at the 2nd one assuming he’d get the same bad call.
Is it possible that umpires are going to refuse to give Stubbs a break since he has the well-earned strikeout reputation? It’s not like a rookie pitcher should be “earning” any calls this early in his career. …
Frazier in right field, Bruce in centerfield when Votto returns. (I know, I know, it will never happen, but I hate to think of Frazier going to the bench.)
Wilson Valdez should not own a HR swing, yet it seems like he brings it out in the most inopportune times. Slap it and run please. Or bunt.
@eric nyc: I think his reputation does not allow him the benefit of a doubt. He has to find a way to get wood on the ball, in that situation.
Superman’s cape blew up in his face.
Just shows you how spoiled we’ve been all year with our starters healthy.
@eric nyc: Gotta agree with you. That 3rd strike was in the same location and was too close not to at least swing and foul off.
Not Jay’s best game in the field tonight.
In all honesty he hasn’t been that great in the field all year.
Ugh. Might not make it to the end of this one, fellas.
Ok. Going to go out and actually enjoy my Saturday night. This one is over.
WOW! not very good ball handling on the right side tonight.
Bruce certainly has had some significant lapses in the field this season. Focus?
This umpire’s zone is ridiculously large. At least he’s consistent.
@vegastypo: Not if Bruce fields like he did tonight.
Wouldn’t mind seeing what Valdez could do on the mound tonight.
I’m not sure why……but Frazier reminds me a little bit like Berkman.
Glad to see Janish dong ok for the Braves, but it got me thinking: Wouldn’t he have been a better fit as an infield bench player coming out of spring training? Can’t judge Redman by one stat for sure, but Braves are looking pretty good on that deal so far.
The Fountain of Youth tour continues.
This one’s not over!
Back to slam range.
Time for a Mesoraco bomba!
@vared: Janish certainly would have been a better SS defensively and he’s also solid at 3B, which Valdez isn’t. And Valdez’ bat has been pathetic, so Janish couldn’t have been worse in that regard.
We need an XL hit from XP.
Dunn just hit career HR #400.
No reason to sugar coat it. Offensively Meso just isn’t ready for this level as anything resembling a regular.
No doubt he’s struggled. I’m optimistically comparing him to a Red who hit a mere .232 last year in his limited playing time: Super-Todd Frazier. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a first-year struggle can lead to 2nd-year success for DM.
@OhioJim: Also LeCure has to be less than 100% I would think.
I don’t know why any pitcher ever throws a strike to Valdez. Just unbelievable that he bats second in the Reds lineup.
Another Ludwhack!
Dave Svweum did something innovative tonite- batted his .370 OB% catcher 2nd.
Ludwick says if you want anything done around you gotta do it yourself. Wam Bam I’ll call ya in the morning.
Ludwick just caught Bruce in club HR lead. I love this team.
Ron Roenicke did something innovative tonite- batted his .370 OB% catcher 2nd.
c’mon now, let’s get Marshall a win here!!!!!!!!
Man Marshall is nas nas nasty tonight.
GEEZZZE Marshall is nasty
Two more hits for Bruce tonight. Do you pinch hit Hanigan for Mesoraco this inning?
Do I? Sure. Would Dusty? Probably not …
CAIRO? WHAT?
How about Miguel Cairo – a home run and triple in one day!?!
Love to see Stubbs do anything other than K here.
If Stubbs walks, we have to send Cozart up for Valdez.
Hold ‘em here and face Marmol in the 9th???????
I am so sick of Drew Stubbs and Hanigan has to catch every game in the playoffs. I can’t believe a lot of people on this board thought Mesoroco needed to play more. Long term I know he’s going to be a good player, probably better than Hanigan, but not this year.
41,236 turned out for tonight’s titanic struggle, 41,236. A sellout. Tomorrows game is also sold out. Standing room only. How bout Pops Cairo showing the kids what a professional at bat looks like.
Got to pinch hit Cozart for Valdez to start the ninth. That’s a no-brainer, right?
I hope so, especially since Valdez showed in Chicago that he can’t take pitches from Marmol.
Big.
Ondrusek… ugh.
I can’t wait until Ondrusek is out of here. Shane Victorino would sure look good in center instead of Stubbs.
It’s not over yet, but sometimes games appear they just aren’t meant to be.
Whatta ya gonna do, he lived up to his name.
Almost entirely a left handed lineup and we put in Ondrusek instead of Arredondo…
C’mon boys – time for a soul-crushing comeback now (soul-crushing to the Stupid Cubs, WLB’s, & Irates, that is.) Let’s have a Hal King-type walk-off by…Crushwick? Super-Todd?
Rather see Leake up.
Sigh…Valdez leading off.
Valdez…..WHY? Bunt.
How many sliders a foot out of the zone will Valdez swing at?
depends on how many Marmol throws!
Trout hit his 23rd HR and stole his 39th base. Guy is not human.
Valdez – not getting it done.
Gameday made that pitch look like it was a strike, right at the knees. radio guys disagree
pitch was lowest strike called of the night.
@vegastypo:
Fox Sports had it just low
Okay! BP setting the table for the boopers.
It was way low. Terrible (and big) call by Mike Everett
That HP Ump has made some terrible calls at the most opportune time for the Reds.
dang
Hey guys, what happened? Just got back from “The Happiest Place On Earth” (D-Land), and heard that the Reds came back, w/ Ondrusek on, in the top of the 9th? Did he make it magical? Did we win?
uh, no
Ondru gave up a homer to make it 9-7. It ended that way.
Frazier safe @ first. Honestly, on a night where the Reds did very little right in the beginning, the Cubs (and umpires) had to work awfully hard to eke out a win.
Watching the Cubs feed. Their idiot announcers are insufferable.
frazier was safe?
I thought the 6th inning top and bottom (allowing 3 and not scoring the 3rd run themselves with second and third and one out then the home run in the top of the 9th were bigger than the start.
They knew they would be in a scuffle all the way. Of course I would have liked to see more fro Redmond but he kept them in the game.
Sigh…Well you have to give them credit, they never gave up right down to the end. You’re not going to win many games where you start a AAA pitcher and give up 9 runs. But they almost pulled it off. Lot of grit. Plus you have to like our odds of taking 3 of 4 tomorrow with Latos on the mound and their bullpen exhausted.
@vegastypo: Nah he was out. It was close but he was out.
disagree, but I don’t have the replay. Did the Reds get a call in the field all night? Doesn’t matter – go get ‘em tomorrow.
I gotta tell ya even though the Reds put their waving the white flag lineup out there tonight, they still almost won the game. Actually they deserved to win the game IMHO. You gotta love this teams never say die attitude, no matter who’s on the field. The Reds will win tomorrow, that’s just the way they roll. Go Reds!! Adios Amigos.
i’d just like to have seen hanigan and/or cozart there in the last few innings … oh well, back at it manana
@vegastypo: Valdez actually had a decent AB. He didn’t swing at anything out of the zone and should have walked but got a lousy call on what should have been ball 4. Stubbs had the bigger out to end the 8th. Gotta score Cairo in that spot. Tie game, we bring in Broxton instead of Ondrusek to pitch the 9th.
i hear ya, but a guy hitting .200 isn’t gonna get any breaks at the plate. nobody should get screwed that badly, though. gameday didn’t have the same view y’all did. ….and hanigan for meso wouldn’t have been the end of the world. i guess dusty was afraid of the game getting tied.
