Pirates. Yes, the Pittsburgh Pirates are over .500 and in second place in August. It’s the first time since 1990 that the Reds and Pirates square off in August or later with both teams being in 1st or 2nd place. (h/t to Joel Luckhaupt)
Mat Latos (9-3, 4.17 ERA) will get the ball in game 1 against the Pirates recently acquired left-handed starter, Wandy Rodriguez (7-9, 3.82 ERA). For anything you need to know about the Pirates, Steve provided his always excellent series preview earlier today.
As for Marty’s hair? Well, the John Erardi article in today’s Enquirer provides a great quote from Reds legend, Tom Browning:
“We’re going to find out if it’s really true that your hair will grow back after you’ve shaved it all off,” said Tom Browning, the former Reds pitcher who buzzes his own head as close as barber clippers will take it. “Marty’s hair was always pretty amazing. Nothing could move it. We (the Reds players) didn’t know if it was really hair, or steel wool.”

If what they said on FSN was accurate, and if my math was as well, over July Chapman recorded only 8 outs that were in play. Over 13.2 innings, and a total of only 14 batters could put the ball in play. That’s….. Ridiculous

Dusty said on the pregame that Valdez is better, should be able to play tomorrow. He didn’t exactly say Valdez couldn’t play today, but it didn’t sound like Dusty was planning to use him, either.

Also, how many AB’s does Bruce have against Wandy Rodriguez in his career? I get sitting a guy if he historically doesn’t match up well with a pitcher, but I can’t imagine the sample size is that big with Bruce and how is it ever going to improve if he doesn’t get more AB’s against him? With no Votto or BP, we need every ounce of offense we can get.

Well he just said that his first trip to the playoffs and WS he played pretty poorly.
OK, I’ll grant him the WS claim; he hit on the interstate vs. the A’s. But the playoffs? Hit .263 (OK, low) but had 2 HR & 3 SB. But here’s another name who had never been in the post-season before 2010: Roy Halladay. And we all know how his first post-season appearance turned out. I think Joe Morgan thinks if he doesn’t constantly talk & make stuff up, they’ll take his mic away.

All these hard hit fly balls have to be getting out sooner or later. Wandy is really leaving the ball up.
Nearly 50 actually. He had a couple of very long at bats, Heisey’s specifically. He just keeps leaving the ball up and they are starting to hack at it every chance they get.

One thing Hanigan does a lot that Mes doesn’t seem to do (at least not very often) is to really try to frame every pitch that seems close. I think it’s a great move, and I wish Mes would do it more often. It’s not that the ump is suddenly going to change a ball call to a strike call, but I think it may help get some borderline pitches called strikes. It’s sort of like saying “ok, you gave that pitch to the hitter, I expect you to give us the next one.” I’m not sure it works, but it can’t hurt.

You know in close games like this I’d rather see Marshall, Broxton, and Chapman come in here. With cueto and Latos especially. Both have consistently gone deep in terms of pitch counts, even if it hasn’t been deep into the game. I’d want to see the rotation get a bit of rest before the final push. Of course I also recognize its thought to take a guy out when his pitching well for a shutout. Short leash I guess.
The Latos-Cozart show has been fantastic tonight.
Get Broxton and Chapman up, but I send Latos out for the 8th with a bit of a leash. I don’t think they have a batter hitting over .220 until their lineup turns over. You might even be able to get a CG out of Latos if he keeps pitching like this.

Great win for the Reds tonight, winning this first game was huge. The team played like it was business as usual tonight, the Pirates not so much. All though Wandy pitched a heck of a game. Looking forward to tomorrows game. Go Reds!! Adios Amigos.

i see people asking about chapman throwing from the stretch… i think he was having a tough time getting his feet comfortable on the mound (he was digging with his spikes a lot) so instead of getting out of rhythim and having the ground crew come work on it, he just went from the stretch. worked out well.
