July has been very good to the ol’ Redlegs, and I’ll be sorry to see it gone after today. One more game left, and Homer Bailey will try to get the Reds back on the winning track tonight.
Discuss the game here. Go Redlegs.

Well, lets get back to baseball on the field tonight. How deflating was 4 o’clock today? Stubbs goes o fer forever and Dusty leaves him in there. Let Stubbie get hot and he sits him…I will never even come close to guessing why.
Dusty’s gonna have to start putting in a solid lineup that never changes when Votto gets back. (Is that possible w Dusty??) Walt J, IMO, sent a message to the club. He believes in what we have along with solid, team chemistry. Let’s bounce the Padres tonight!!
1. Chris Heisey (R) CF
2. Wilson Valdez (R) SS
3. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
4. Jay Bruce (L) RF
5. Ryan Ludwick (R) LF
6. Scott Rolen (R) 3B
7. Todd Frazier (R) 1B
8. Devin Mesoraco (R) C
9. Homer Bailey (R) P
Hopefully Devin Mesoraco has a great and memorable game – we might not see him for a few days if he gets suspended. Maybe he can sweet talk the umpires a bit.
It seems to me alot of the other teams have good team chemistry just like we do. There is no way that is the reason The Reds didn’t make a move. I would believe the right deal wasn’t there or the player refused the trade but not team chemistry. I look at what some of the big teams gave up for big time players and feel like the kid at the parade that didn’t get any candy thrown from the float.
11 more games this year against the Cubbies, 7 more games this year against the Phillies, 3 more games this year against the Marlins (21 total games) and those three teams are a mere shell of their former selves. Dag Gum It Anywho, it sure feels good to be on top this year!!
We’re 20 games over .500. None of the other teams in the division made earth-shattering moves. We’re playing well, and pitching well w the best defense in the NL!! ‘Nuff said!! Why disrupt that? Oh, we’ll get Votto back soon!! Wow, what an upgrade, huh? Team chemistry cannot be overlooked!!
@localboy: So are you assuming that when Votto comes back, Paul is going to be sent out? Do you think that Overbay offers more than Paul?
It seems to me that the better move is to just keep Paul and send Cairo out when Votto comes back. If Cairo goes to AAA, you can bring him back in September.
@wally mo: Baker wanted to play small ball w a good bunter. BUT, he STILL moved him over w a grounder to the rt side. An excellent No. 2 batter play!!!
Of all the non-Fraziers in the National League, Ludwick is the best.
Which brings up a good question. When Mes gets his suspension are we going to bring up another catcher, stick with just Hannigan for a bit or just let Frazier play first and catch too? Personally I think we’re fine with an 8 man lineup. Wait, would they let us have Frazier bat twice in the lineup if he plays 2 positions?
Now you’re just being silly. If Frazier didn’t want to be playing on a team he wouldn’t be in baseball. He’d be President or something.. maybe a wrestler (FEAR THE FRAZE!!!)? Something else.
Sheldon referred to Sulbaran as the No. 5 prospect and Joseph as the No. 7 prospect. Unsure whose ratings those were. He seemed a bit shocked at the Broxton trade, didn’t see it as necessarily a bad thing, but didn’t think it was necessary, either. Called it a lot to give up “as long as the Reds are happy with it, that’s all that matters.”

Bailey with 27 pitches through 2. I truly believe Homer is taking a huge step forward this year and is pitching very well. Cueto, Latos, & Bailey look to be an incredible 3 headed monster going forward, add in Chapman then Leake and you have an excellent starting 5. Broxman next year will compete for the closer’s role having loved his time here and going deep in the playoffs. From my fingers to God’s ears!!!

As someone else stated in an earlier post, I do remember many here bemoaning the signing of Mr. Ludwick…can we all agree now that in fact that was a pretty good value signing and maybe the player isn’t dead weight after all..;-)

it’s true, i hated the signing, and at first it looked like i was exactly right. but these days, ludwick has to be considered one of the best signings of the offseason.

even ludwick has said that going to SD’s spacious ballpark messed with his head, but he’s been hitting some long home runs lately, would have gone out of any ballpark. I saw the upper deck shot in San Diego a few weeks ago. Unsure how long tonight’s was, but if he just needed confidence, sure looks like he found it.
I think every single poster here on these boards, no matter what they may say about a particular player are more than happy to be proven wrong in the Red’s favor. No sense beating a horse over it. Horses are expensive.

Bailey’s learning not to let little things like a small rally or a sudden HR snowball in his head. He’s starting to get it in the mental part of pitching. That can differentiate just a good pitcher to a very good pitcher.
@localboy: I don’t understand what you’re saying. a) Cairo just played first. b) The move wouldn’t be made until Votto gets back. c) Frazier plays first and third, and is essentially redundant with Cairo, except a way better hitter who can also play LF.
So again, it comes down to what Paul and Overbay can offer the team. Paul plays all three OF positions, Overbay only plays first. Overbay hit pretty well this year, and Paul has hit pretty well for the Reds. If you think Overbay will hit better than Paul, then maybe it’s worth it. I don’t know if that’s true though.

I am saying Cairo’s play has been lethargic at best, Votto had surgery Rolen is pron to fatigue and X Paul may or may not earn his spot with his bat.
Its not my money, for mine give me insurance for what we have.
I doubt we bring anyone up for the suspension. With the way the rotation is set up right now, Hanny will catch the next three days. Hopefully he gets the suspension tomorrow, and as long as it isn’t more than 4-5 games, I think they’ll be ok.

too bad Dempster had to get traded today…now the pirates get to face some guy named Casey Coleman who’s sportin a 7.34 ERA and a WHIP a tick below 2. Looks like we’re gonna need a win today
Homer has matured 10 years in the last three months. He get’s stiffed on a check-swing strike and then just fires strike three. Like nothing doing. Man, I really like to watch this guy pitch.
@CharlotteNCRedsFan: Guy does seem to make things happen when he’s in the lineup. I’d be interested to see what our record is when he starts. I think it was 12-5 the last time someone posted it.
Though thrown out at third, the reds seem to finally be utilizing their speed and are stealing more bases. Also, first to thirds seem more common these days as well.
@wally mo: I say let him play short. It forces dusty to hit someone else leadoff. I’d take the defensive shortcomings to get Cozart’s bat and lack of patience out of the lineup. Win-win
I think Cozart is underperforming at the top of the lineup. I think moving him down, taking the pressure off improves his numbers. I also think I prefer him at short over Rolen, yes. Could be me remembering wrong but I seem to remember Dusty giving Cozart some advice about “swinging early” and ever since then he’s had issues with being “impatient.” Early in the year he was a little more selective.

@Mwv: I wasn’t saying put Rolen at short. I was saying play Todd there. It would basically be ensuring his bat stays in the lineup and Rolen would basically be playing over Cozart. I agree that Cozart needs to be moved down, but we can wish in one hand and…
Perhaps I read something wrong, who was he talking about playing at short to keep Rolen in and bench Cozart? Wow the wheels fell off for Homer this inning.
wow, just when i was saying that homer looks like a totally different pitcher, he turns right back into his old self. that was a meltdown of epic proportions.
You gotta be kidding me, back to back triples and now its a one run game. Well crap, never mind now its a tied game. I better hurry up and post this before the Padres take the lead.
@Mwv: I was saying play Todd Frazier at short once Joey comes back to keep Frazier in there every day. He read my comment incorrectly and thought I was saying put Rolen at short.
Brantley suddenly wondering whether the Reds pitchers are getting tired from having never missed starts this season. If true, odd that it would happen to different guys on back to back nights …
Just goes back to the whole “What Baker will do” vs. “What common sense would do.” I’d just keep Frazier at third, put Rolen on the bench and then flip around the lineup to something that makes sense and call it a day. So would most folks. Baker.. I still don’t know how he picks lineups.
Ah the mystical Walt Jocketty. He must have known are starting pitchers were going to start pitching terribly when he traded for Broxton. It makes so much more sense now.
Well if the Reds all get as far as we all think/hope they will this year, we might be stuck with these lineups for another 3 years at about 3-4 million a year
Rolen on the bench? I understand and agree that Frazier has played his way into an everyday player, but so has Rolen. There are two other starters who deserve a closer look than Rolen when it comes to benching.

Just a personal preference thing. Who would you play Frazier/Rolen over? I like Frazier in there at third with Cozart at short. Do you sit Stubbs and move Bruce over to center so that Frazier can play right?
What percentage of BP’s swings does he fall down? Seems like it’s alarmingly high.
The falling over doesn’t bother me a huge amount. More amusing to me are the 3-4 at bats per year where BP is still doing his practice swings across the front of the plate.. while the first pitch is on the way.
Homer has done this very thing before- tease with 3 weeks or a month of good pitching, get everyone convinced he’s arrived, then pull a stunt like tonite; not me though, I said I wasn’t going to fall for it this time.
Valdez didn’t run out that ground ball and he had the bad base running mistake earlier. I thought he was supposed to be a veteran clubhouse presence.
Kinda funny, actually. Valdez should have been thrown on his steal attempt, but the ball was dropped. Then he should have been out on his grounder, but the throw was bad. The one time they got him out was a play where he shouldn’t have been out.
Looks to me like Phillips has suddenly gotten himself in to the “jack home runs” mode. He is pulling everything. He was 0-5 last night and didn’t look good in any of the ABs.

Bruce, with his 0-1 plus a walk, with 2 outs/runner is scoring position tonite now has a career average of .195 in those situations. .211 .175 .188 .211 .163 is his year by year average.
@bdogg47: They might want to check to see if they have one of Dimitri Young’s old jerseys stashed away somewhere cuz dude is huge! 300+ Gonna have to special order that uni!

Actually if I remember right from the west coast trip Young has lost a ton of weight, looked good.
@Mwv: Yea good to see. Great guy. He was just the only Red that I could think of that weighed 300+ lbs in his playing days. Can anyone else think of someone?
With Bray on the DL, that leaves the Reds with 2 LH pitchers (Chapman shouldn’t count b/c he’s the closer, going to come in no matter what) and 3 LH hitters, which could end up going back down to 2 if they send Paul down when Joey comes back (which I don’t think they’ll do but nothing this team does roster wise would surprise me anymore). There can’t be another team in the league with that few lefties on the team.
This is one dam good Baseball team, that’s all I can say. Can’t wait to see em play tomorrow night. Go Reds Go!!! Enjoyed the thread tonight, very civil and agitator free. Adios Amigos.
Tomorrows lineup:
Cairo plays first and second
Valdez on the left side
The Ghost of Dusty Baker playing the entire outfield and Frazier get the day of for rest…….
Official word on Phillips now is “strained calf” which the radio announcers describe as a re-aggravation of the injury on Sunday. On Sunday, Phillips said it was nothing more than a cramp. I thought at the time it was a knee. Brantley – twice – on the radio broadcast, added “or his knee” to the official statement of injury.
I admire Phillips attempt to play through the injury. I’m sure it’s difficult and he’s being heroic, even helping the team. It might even be a good thing that he’s playing hurt right now. But I hope that is all with the full knowledge of the club and part of a joint decision that he play hurt for now. I would hate to think he is telling the team one thing (cramp) when in fact it is something else, risking more serious injury.
He was severely limited in the field both last night and tonight. On a few plays tonight he didn’t even try when in the past he would. He fell when he batted once tonight and just trotted to first base.
Then, he hit the game winning home run.
So good for him, I just hope the situation isn’t being mismanaged because the team is accepting the player’s word (again) about an injury.
Is he that good or did the Cubs just get that much worse?
The Cubs traded away two starting pitchers, a catcher who wasn’t hitting much, and a bench player. Not much of an excuse for the position players being unable to get a hit. I think the better explanation is that they can have their moments but are just not very good overall.
Headley’s bat looked like it broke the plane of viewing you get on TV (if that makes any sense) so my armchair umpiring says he went through it.
I’m sure since SuperTodd can do anything, he can play second base. Could he fill in for Phillips? Will Frazier be some guy who merry-go rounds on the field?
The Buco and the REdbirds can’t gain ground. This might frustrate them–The Reds need to take care of their business WWWWWWWWWW and they will get there OK. Uncle Walt did get a good arm. Bray is on the DL, thus , he should stay there . The Dude just can’t keep healthy. I hope Mr. Simon will say more last outing. Bud Black probably regretted to leave Marqiz in one batter longer. I think it is good that Bailey got whipped tonight because his next outing will be a gem.
The Cubs still have DeJesus, Castro, LaHair, Soriano and Barney in tonight’s lineup. Not exactly the ’76 Reds, but these aren’t lifetime minor leaguers, either. Burnett must just have everything working tonight …
Since I pretty much don’t care what those weirdos in the AL do with their DH and wins, I love how the O’s swept the Yankees and I want to say that I hope they have the pleasure of losing to the Reds in the WS this year!
Best record in Major League Baseball. Best July for the Reds since the team in 1976 picked up 20 wins (and 2 more losses). They were OK I guess.

Who would we get from the waiver trade that would upgrade our team?
Lyle Overbay is possible. Good, solid LH PH/bench player.
Is Overbay hurt? I can’t figure out why Arizona DFA’d him. His numbers look really good this year.
Well, lets get back to baseball on the field tonight. How deflating was 4 o’clock today? Stubbs goes o fer forever and Dusty leaves him in there. Let Stubbie get hot and he sits him…I will never even come close to guessing why.
Overbay might’ve been caught in the youth-in-numbers game in Ariz.
I never thought overbay was that good.
Dusty’s gonna have to start putting in a solid lineup that never changes when Votto gets back. (Is that possible w Dusty??) Walt J, IMO, sent a message to the club. He believes in what we have along with solid, team chemistry. Let’s bounce the Padres tonight!!

2. Wilson Valdez (R) SS
3. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
4. Jay Bruce (L) RF
5. Ryan Ludwick (R) LF
6. Scott Rolen (R) 3B
7. Todd Frazier (R) 1B
8. Devin Mesoraco (R) C
9. Homer Bailey (R) P
Hopefully Devin Mesoraco has a great and memorable game – we might not see him for a few days if he gets suspended. Maybe he can sweet talk the umpires a bit.
Maybe Devin can sweet talk Joe Torre, also.
@GoReds19: Maybe he’s not historically that great but he’s having a REALLY good year. OPS over .800.
WJ will talk on FoxSportsOhio in the 4th inning.
How about this for a glass half full kinda guy…
11 more games this year against the Cubbies, 7 more games this year against the Phillies, 3 more games this year against the Marlins (21 total games) and those three teams are a mere shell of their former selves. Dag Gum It Anywho, it sure feels good to be on top this year!!

Looks like a smaller crowd tonight compared to last night.
Go get ‘em Homer.
That cutter Bailey throws this year is fun to watch.
Bailey looks like he’s gonna get low strikes tonight. That’s good.
Small crowds, w a team in 1st place most of the year, doesn’t help WJ make big name trades that everybody wants.
Who wants Lyle “Overpaid” Overbay?
What is his cost per base hit compared to Cairo ?
That is the question, can he outplay Miggy ?
atta boy
Heisey hustles out a double, and Valdez moves him over. Gotta love that!!
W Overbay, it never hurts to have another LH, veteran bat. It balances out the bench.
@bdogg47: do you have to love it? even when every analysis around shows that that bunt is a bad play?
That bunt served no purpose other than to give away an out. How many times does that need to happen before we stop doing it? And in the first inning!
Dear Ryan Ludwick,
We are terribly sorry for all of the horrible things we said about you early in the year.
Sincerely,
Redleg Nation
Atta boy Luddy!
brantley suggests calling him “clutch-wick”. works for me …
@wally mo: Baker wanted to play small ball w a good bunter. BUT, he STILL moved him over w a grounder to the rt side. An excellent No. 2 batter play!!!
Of all the non-Fraziers in the National League, Ludwick is the best.

@Mwv: I often wonder why this team needs more than one player.
Todd Frazier hits on 20, and still wins every time.
Now you’re just being silly. If Frazier didn’t want to be playing on a team he wouldn’t be in baseball. He’d be President or something.. maybe a wrestler (FEAR THE FRAZE!!!)? Something else.
So Bray hit the DL again…looked fine last night…
Sheldon referred to Sulbaran as the No. 5 prospect and Joseph as the No. 7 prospect. Unsure whose ratings those were. In February, FanGraphs had Sulbaran at #9 in the organization, no mention of Joseph. Sulbaran currently walking 4.5 per 9IP.
@wally mo: I figure Paul cant play first.
Dont see Miggy playing it either….
Overbay is insurance and Paul has to earn his spot as an outfielder.
I see 7 games without Votto in August, with Dusty Frazier will sit three of those……
Kelch: Marty is demanding that Reds fans donate $20,000 to the Reds Community Fund, then he will have his hair cut off after Friday night’s game, down on the field, before the fireworks.
Look at Frazier. He has decided that every fan down the third base line tonight gets a free ball. What a guy.
Bailey with 27 pitches through 2. I truly believe Homer is taking a huge step forward this year and is pitching very well. We would have to extend Broxton to get that

@rfay00: fine as far as health, I assume. I think the strain came from Dusty watching Bray work…..
I think every single poster here on these boards, no matter what they may say about a particular player are more than happy to be proven wrong in the Red’s favor. No sense beating a horse over it. Horses are expensive.
well said.
Bailey’s learning not to let little things like a small rally or a sudden HR snowball in his head. He’s starting to get it in the mental part of pitching. That can differentiate just a good pitcher to a very good pitcher.

So..do we go short handed when Devin is suspended?
Nice hit by that pitcher, looked like Leake out there.
You can’t groove fastballs to Marquis.
I doubt we bring anyone up for the suspension. With the way the rotation is set up right now, Hanny will catch the next three days. Hopefully he gets the suspension tomorrow, and as long as it isn’t more than 4-5 games, I think they’ll be ok.
I want me some Corky Miller
Ya gotta have a back up catcher. I know I know, even Frazier would have problems with that one.
I could not disagree more with this statement. Frazier could catch 2 pitchers at the same time, while batting.
too bad Dempster had to get traded today…now the pirates get to face some guy named Casey Coleman who’s sportin a 7.34 ERA and a WHIP a tick below 2. Looks like we’re gonna need a win today
Headley went!!! Wat tha,,,,!!! Ok, cya!!

I’m pretty sure when they do Frasier interviews there’s closed captioning for the awesome impaired available.
Question for an admin here:
Can we start a poll for a “grade” on the Broxton trade?
I don’t care what anyone else thinks: Valdez has some player in him.
He also has some dopey in him.
@CharlotteNCRedsFan: Guy does seem to make things happen when he’s in the lineup. I’d be interested to see what our record is when he starts. I think it was 12-5 the last time someone posted it.
Bruce starting to warm up lately. Keeps hitting away from the shift and getting walks.
@CharlotteNCRedsFan: Valdez is a solid player, agreed……Then, he goes to third on a grounder in front of him! Ick!!
Jay’s having a nice series so far. 6th time he’s been on base.
CLUTCH-WICK!
Ryan Ludwick … I love you … not really, but for the moment, sure.
clutch-wick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Bang. Base runners + GABP = SCORRRRRREEEEEEEEE.
Ludwick is closing in on Frazier territory.
only because frazier is allowing it
@CharlotteNCRedsFan: agreed. it’s like watching a totally different, and much better, pitcher these days.
Ludwick is money!!!
Though thrown out at third, the reds seem to finally be utilizing their speed and are stealing more bases. Also, first to thirds seem more common these days as well.
LUDDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m stuck with the San Diego feed here in Vegas…Enberg is blaming that homer on the ballpark haha…dude that was crushed
This whole team is collectively picking up Votto!!! No doubt abt it!!!!
FRAZIER!!!!
Frazier!
and I raise you an upper decker!
Frazier says “I’m the only Frazier.”
see what I mean?
Frasier says: Cool story Ludwick, just remember who the man is.
Frazier w an awesome Johnson!!! Wow!!!
Frazier and Luddy trying to out-Frazier each other
Does this just feel like the 2010 team or what? Let’s keep it rolling into October boys!
LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!
FFRAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIZZZZZZZZEERR!!!!!!!!!!!
how are they going to keep him frazier on the bench?
@zippy: nah
Yeah that’s the saddest part of this whole thing.. when Votto comes back we’ll see less and less of Frazier.
@Catalytic: I’m feeling it!!! W some awesome pitching to go w it!!!!
Would you believe Frazier hit that in the upper deck using a wiffleball bat. The legend continues.
@wally mo: I say let him play short. It forces dusty to hit someone else leadoff. I’d take the defensive shortcomings to get Cozart’s bat and lack of patience out of the lineup. Win-win
@Mwv: by then Rolen will be fatigued
WJ is singing my tune!!!! YES!!!! Team chemistry is rocking, baby!!!
I would not want to bench Cozart. His problem isn’t his bat, it’s where he’s at in the order. Put him further down in the lineup and he’d be fine.
You’d rather have Cozart’s bat in the lineup than Rolen? Even when Rolen is at his worst, he’s not that much worse than Cozart.
Super Todd’s home run was a bomb.
Sure enough, Pirates hang a 4-spot in the 1st.
now they’re showing video of Frazier hitting the one handed homer against the rockies and saying its the ballpark haha…I swear
Pirates hit heavy early- Neil Walker 1st inning 1 out grand slam.
Yuck. That was not a good pitch.
Sheesh.
The HR bug strikes again.
Prefer Cozart over Rolen at short?
3 runs?! Stay focused Homer!!!
Old Homer is starting to rear it’s ugly head.
Are you kidding me? Homer of old’s decided to rear his ugly head.
Homers says, It’s good, gimme the ball. I’ll get it done.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m optimistic that next season Frazier will beat out Willie Harris for the last spot on the roster.
@LVW: Haha. Weird.
Boy oh boy
Are they using helium filled baseballs in this game or what.
Sorry, 4 runs?!
Looks like we get deep into the bullpen tonite….
Good feelings gone
@Mwv: I wasn’t saying put Rolen at short. I was saying play Todd there. It would basically be ensuring his bat stays in the lineup and Rolen would basically be playing over Cozart. I agree that Cozart needs to be moved down, but we can wish in one hand and…
Bring in LeClure…..
Ah, I see. Well if you admit Dusty won’t move Cozart down in the lineup then I think we can both agree he also won’t play Frazier at short either.
@Mwv: I was saying play Todd Frazier at short once Joey comes back to keep Frazier in there every day. He read my comment incorrectly and thought I was saying put Rolen at short.
Jay Bruce just doesn’t seem that into fielding tonight…
Not a fun series so far. Homer needs to slow down and calm down.
We’ve given up far too many free bases on walks and to pitchers the last two nights that have come back to bite us.
oh no…we suck again!
Homer left too many in the hitting zone this inning.
Wow. Did the Cubs gut their team. The Pirates should cruise the rest of that series.
You’ll have that now and then.
Brantley suddenly wondering whether the Reds pitchers are getting tired from having never missed starts this season. If true, odd that it would happen to different guys on back to back nights …
I tried to unload a $1 Homer Bailey in my fantasy league while he was hot and noone trusted him enough to keep him at $1 next year.
Homer implodes! Ouch!! Pads are playing hard! Give ‘em some props.
Just goes back to the whole “What Baker will do” vs. “What common sense would do.” I’d just keep Frazier at third, put Rolen on the bench and then flip around the lineup to something that makes sense and call it a day. So would most folks. Baker.. I still don’t know how he picks lineups.
@neestj01:
I’m with you.
Even I would say that Rolen should not be moved from thied to short
Wheels are coming off.
Ah the mystical Walt Jocketty. He must have known are starting pitchers were going to start pitching terribly when he traded for Broxton. It makes so much more sense now.
Well if the Reds all get as far as we all think/hope they will this year, we might be stuck with these lineups for another 3 years at about 3-4 million a year
Let’s see what Todd Redmond can do. I believe he is in the house tonight.
Just hope this night doesn’t stick with him. Next start will be interesting to watch.
Thanks for giving away an out there, Baker.
All these ex Reds that has to be the issue.
@Mwv:
@RedLeg75: Bullpen has been used quite a bit lately. Probably looking at 2-3 innings from Sam
Redmond has not been used in the Major Leagues. Let us see what he can do.
Nice hustle by Valdez!
Brandon Phillips is hurt and he’s limited because of it.
Is it official that he’s hurt? I’ve been wondering for a little while now.
Frazier in right, Frazier at short. The best description of Frazier is he is never in the wrong place when the ball is in play.
Both Cozart and Stubbs have earned a ride on the pines. Much more so than Frazier or Rolen.
Is our starting pitching really going to fall apart RIGHT at the deadline?
These guys better sober up. They haven’t clinched a play-off spot yet.
Man oh man. Can’t keep walking guys.
Give the Padres credit. They have consistently worked the count.
BP didn’t look hurt on that DP. Nicely done.
@seat101: Other than Ludwick, Stubbs has been our hottest hitter lately. Don’t think that deserves a benching.
@neestj01:
Key word there: Lately. Does his history give you any hope he’ll keep it up?
Who cares. Maybe he keeps it up………for “tonight”?
Nice job Sam.
Looks to me like Phillips has suddenly gotten himself in to the “jack home runs” mode. He is pulling everything. He was 0-5 last night and didn’t look good in any of the ABs.
@RedForever:
@RedForever:
I guess we gotta take the good with the bad.
Bruce, with his 0-1 plus a walk, with 2 outs/runner is scoring position tonite now has a career average of .195 in those situations. .211 .175 .188 .211 .163 is his year by year average.
4-0 now 4-2 Cards.
@seat101: Actually yea. Take away his 0-fer a million in June and he’s having a good year, similar to his 2010 and 2011.
Rolen swings at ball 4.
Correction, he’s 0-0 with a walk tonite. Yahoo showed him batting last inning.
Sam is just taking care of business out there.
Nice job, Sammy!
Nasty 2 1/3 from Lecure. Bring him back out Dusty
He ain’t fancy. he ain’t slick, he is just Solid. That’s our Sam. God Bless Him.
@neestj01:
Good luck with that.
Dusty trying to pump life into Cairo, it wont work
I swear I could do better than Cairo
Wrigley Field looks packed tonight, Pennant Fever?
I don’t think Cairo could make the Cubs or the Astros 25 man right now
Ok I’m ready for Joey to come back now please. PLEASE.
Let’s just swing for HR’s, shall we? /endofrant
I’m hoping to jinx it here so it needs to be said – AJ perfect through 4 with only 45 pitches. Go Cubs Go
wow that was ugly…no clue how to hit slider away…c’mon man
@RedForever:
1 for 2. With a walk. 1 run scored.
What have you done for me lately?
3 breaking balls to Heisey and cya later. Breaking balls continue to confound him. Amazing!
Dusty doesn’t like Mez.
If you’re going to bring Hanny in anyways, why not pinch hit him instead of Cairo?
Two positions we should look at, Cairo and Valdez
All others are earning their pay right now. I say keep XPaul and let one of these guys go.
Nice looking play from Ludwick.
@eric nyc:
I’m with you.
I will put it in writing. Ludwick has been a great acquisition. Didn’t think so at first, but he is good for the team.
Agree 100%. Never thought I’d be saying that in May.
I know it’s not his most important duty, but Mesoraco can’t really hit. Do we think he’ll get much better?
@Abel: I’m sure the front office is thinking the same, but it looks like we gave up the wrong catching prospect in the Latos deal.
Philips has been trying to hit that HR all series. Got it that time.
BP!!!!! GONZO!!!!!
BP 1-9 in the past two games using the homerun swing. I’ll take it though!
Also, just to throw it out there.. I think Mes has not yet had the time or consistent at bats to show us if he can hit.
Now it’s the bullpen to shut ‘em down…. Is Broxton in town yet? Give ‘em a uni!!
Who throws next ?
I’d run Marshal right back out there but I don’t have the slightest idea what Dusty will do.
Nice call
@bdogg47: They might want to check to see if they have one of Dimitri Young’s old jerseys stashed away somewhere cuz dude is huge! 300+ Gonna have to special order that uni!
Actually if I remember right from the west coast trip Young has lost a ton of weight, looked good.
@neestj01: Funny!!
@Mwv: Hes gonna set up LO
Yeah he’s roughly Todd Coffey shaped.
@Mwv: Yea good to see. Great guy. He was just the only Red that I could think of that weighed 300+ lbs in his playing days. Can anyone else think of someone?
I don’t know about exact weights but the Reds have had some big fellas. Mr. Mitchel comes to mind.
@Mwv: Dmitri did look good in SD! He could probably play now! What a great guy he was as a Red!!
@neestj01: Dunn played 300
Been a while since Dusty didn’t make the dumbest move of the game. Yea, let’s take our best hitter out of lineup b/c he’s left handed.
Dunn was the other guy I was going to mention, though his was less fat and more Texas.
@localboy: I thought about Dunn but he was never “fat”. Lot more room to put 300 lbs when you’re 6’6
Also been a while since Same Lecure didn’t have the worst facial hair in a game! Good lord that ‘stache is dirty.
How ’bout Dante Bichette?
Who will it be ?
LO ?
@hoosierdad: I think he was more roids than fat. But good call
BP may be done for a while…
@neestj01: I could be wrong but it looks as if Brox is more athletic than fat. Like maybe he is a point guard on the mens team back home…..
BP’s out??? May not be a good sign. Gotta monitor that story after the game.
@localboy: hahaha point guard!? I wouldn’t stand a chance in that league!
what happened to Phillips?
@vegastypo: Dunno, but seems like his calf is bugging him again.
Or knee.
Votto says it’s a cramp. That’s all that matters.
Marshal is just a stud.
Nice outing by Marshall & LeCure tonight. Chapman to finish?
Dusty said he wanted to keep Chapman away for 3 days but.. I’m a huge Chapman guy and I’d love to see him out there to nail this down.
Ok good, Chapman it is.
Frazier just got under that! Damn!
@Richard Fitch: No four letter words please.
Well, as for Frazier.. he saw that Ludwick didn’t hit another HR so he didn’t want to embarrass him.
If BP misses any time, it would be a good opportunity for Dusty to get Cairo going…
First home run Homer had given up in 20 innings.
20,356 on hand for tonight’s titanic struggle, 20,356.
X-man does it again!!
The X man hits again
@Steve Mancuso: Homer will be fine…Pittsburgh is just what he needs.
Ok, Chappy-time!!
Who needs Joey Votto? Can XPaul play first?
Blasphemer
AJ Burnett has a no hitter thru 6.
@neestj01: I don’t see Paul going down w the need for a LH bat on the bench.
No one left on that cubs team to get a hit.
Seriously though, X-man hasn’t had a bad at bat yet. Very impressive.
@LVW: Are we missing Burnett in our series with them? He’s owned us this year.
FEAR THE FRAZE!
Frazier just keeps going & going & ……..
FRAZIER!
Frazier w the bat, NOW the glove!!! Suh-weet!!!
SuperTodd.
He just cut that bat like a lumberjack.
@RedLegHerrm: No AJ in the series this weekend. Pirates have an off day on Thursday
Spectacular play for most, routine for Frazier.
meso left the game with dizziness, i think Brantley said …
I’m more impressed by Bruce on that play to be honest. If I saw a charging Frasier coming at me I would not have kept on going.
Wow that slider was strike 3.
Frazier should decide to break out his switch-hitting.
Headley’s timing that FB!!! Be careful!!
Needs to just toss that slider in there even on 3-2, if he walks so what.. he certainly won’t hit it.
Hey Headley, quit being annoying.
i don’t know how you could sit Frazier or send Paul down when Votto comes back…but both will probably happen
Bang. That slider is untouchable.
Slide piece for the win.
@neestj01: Nice pitch
Nice pitch from Chappie 86Mph slider!
Chapman is deadly. What a weapon to have come playoff time.
Headley grab some bench!!! Sit down!!! LeCure, Marshall, and Chappy are the players of the game tonight!!! Hope BP is ok w the reported strained calf.
Good win fellas! There is no curse of Marty’s hair! Let’s get 9 more wins and shave someone else
did Headley really swing? radio crew is unclear whether he actually swung, only that the home plate ump did not appeal, made the call himself
Who cares? It counts. In the books. Another win streak.
sure, it counts, was just curious how close of a call it really was. being radio-bound has its disadvantages!!!
nice to put that 1 game losing streak to bed.
This is one dam good Baseball team, that’s all I can say. Can’t wait to see em play tomorrow night. Go Reds Go!!! Enjoyed the thread tonight, very civil and agitator free. Adios Amigos.
Chapman has had only 1 outing where he didn’t record a strikeout this year……………….amazing.
Winning is much better than losing.
@localboy: LMAO!!!
Burnett through 7: 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 5 K, 2 BB, 55 pitches
Is he that good or did the Cubs just get that much worse?
The Cubs traded away two starting pitchers, a catcher who wasn’t hitting much, and a bench player. Not much of an excuse for the position players being unable to get a hit. I think the better explanation is that they can have their moments but are just not very good overall.
@Steve Mancuso: Agree. Phillips should rest, and get healthy, if need be.
Cubs are a AAA team now. ‘Nuff said! We have 2 in the division now w the Astros also! Unreal!!
@Abel: If the Cubs wanted this game to be played at home, then they should be playing in Iowa b/c their whole AAA roster is playing right now.
@vegastypo: I think the players are in a shelll shocked because they won’t win another game easily with these AAA guys who are playing now.
The Cubs still have DeJesus, Castro, LaHair, Soriano and Barney in tonight’s lineup. Not exactly the ’76 Reds, but these aren’t lifetime minor leaguers, either. Burnett must just have everything working tonight …
AJ just plunked Barney on the head!! Ouch!! He’s being pulled from the game.
Would it no longer be considered a no-hitter?
either way, it will be a pleasure NOT to face Burnett this weekend!!!!!!!!!!
or James Macdonald. He’s been roughed up his past 5 starts, but still has the best stuff in that rotation
at least the rockies are still fighting back, only down by 6-5 now
looks like i spoke too soon, Cards just erupted again
no no gone! goin to bed
now it won’t
@Prime: He still has the no-hitter going……. No, wait, no-hitter broken up. AJ pissed at the previous pitch not a strike.
That sucks for Burnett, considering strike three wasn’t called.
that previous pitch was outside…now the pitch before THAT, on the inside corner, was even closer. I think Burnett expected a make-up call …
Nor should it have been.
Hey, Nats lost, so the Reds are alone with the best record in baseball. Yankees are two games back after getting swept by the O’s.
…and no no hitter for Burnett.
Night all! Great thread, Reds fans!!
@bdogg47: Yeah I know. It was just a poorly worded joke since he had just hit Barney.
