The red-hot Cincinnati Reds have won ten games in a row…all without Joey Votto. Insane, right? Well, when was the last time the Reds won eleven straight games?
1957.
Yep, a win today would put the Reds into territory that hasn’t been charted by a Reds team for fifty-five years. The Big Red Machine never did it. The Wire-to-Wire Reds didn’t do it. The “No Clever Nickname” 2012 Reds have a chance to explore that territory today.
So everyone is excited tonight, right? Well, add this to the mix: the Reds are returning home for their first game tonight after an undefeated road trip. Even better: Mike Leake will face former Red Edinson Volquez.
Lots of storylines tonight. Don’t you love it?
Discuss the game here. Go Redlegs.

Cairo’s last game as a Red?
Cozart 6
Stubbs 8
Phillips 4
Bruce 9
Rolen 5
Ludwick 7
Cairo 3
Mesoraco 2
Leake 1
@vegastypo:
Hopefully Valdez as well. Go Reds.
Tonight, my Trivia Team shall be named “the electrifying Elevens.” Suggestions are welcome. I’m not married to the name.
Work the count boys. Remember 1st inning Eddy?
“No Clever Nickname” 2012 Reds. Hmmm. Or, maybe the “No-Name” Reds. Or, maybe the “Who-Dey” Reds. I will even go as far as, “The Baker’s Two Dozen”?
So Edinson comes back to pitch in GABP. You know he’s looking forward to that prospect…NOT! All those BB don’t play very well in the launching pad.
I smell a contest coming.
How about the “noBake Reds”?
Boxberger is back with the big club, so all four of the ex-Reds, Volquez, Alonzo, Grandal & Boxberger, will be at GABP tonight.
OK, I’ll play… how about Jockety’s Ponies
Or, in honor of the manager’s lineups, the half-Baked Reds?
sorry …
Hehe.

Nice!
by the way, the Reds-Padres are the free mlb.com TV game of the day …
Great minds think alike.
FYI- The Padres @ Reds game is the free game on mlb.com
Wheres the mighty Frazier?
Your team is +21 and it seems some still are not happy. Both Cairo and Valdez have made nice contributions this year. Sorry but I hope both are still here throughout the season, this team right now is just fine.
I don’t dislike Cairo as much I think his capabilities are too much of an overlap of what Frazier can give. If he can’t fill in all over the infield, meaning we’re going strictly for offense, I just don’t think he has it any more…..But I thought that about Rolen as well, too.
Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports that Shane Victorino is the Reds’ “top target” in their search for a leadoff hitter, and their interest in Juan Pierre “appears to have been exaggerated.”
The general feeling had seemed to be that Pierre was the most likely target for the Reds, but he might just be a fallback option. The problem, Knobler says, is that the Reds feel the Phillies’ asking price for Victorino is too high at this point. The Dodgers and Pirates have also been linked to the Hawaiian outfielder.
Another nugget –
Diamondbacks designated 1B Lyle Overbay for assignment.
He was cleared to make room for the newly-acquired Chris Johnson on the active roster. Overbay, 35, is hitting .292/.367/.448 with two homers and an .815 OPS in 110 plate appearances with Arizona this season. He is likely to draw trade interest.
Cool news: Reds are #1 in MLB.com’s power rankings!
@hydeman: I wondered this as well, then remembered he was 0-5 w/ 3K’s in the mile high yesterday. Probably a mental break.
OK, now, wait on Volquez to throw strikes!!!!!!!
Leake off to a good start. That base hit was a ground ball that BP usually gets a glove on.
Mike Leake is a gem on this staff….He might be my favorite Red pitcher…nothing but positive things having him on the team..s
Look at Cozart trying to work that count, attaboy.
I will take that every time over first pitch pop ups.
Oh baby! Stubbbbbbs.
Stubbs! Maybe, just maybe, he’s turning his season around and will be the player we all expected him to be.
Stubby!
@MileHighRed: What? this goes against all of Dusty’s thinking….Don’t you have to hit a couple HRs or maybe a 3 fer 5 day to get benched…
Drewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Stubbs is now 3-3 against his former teammates this season with 2 HRs.
Stubbs doesn’t want to leave Cincy.
It looks like Drew doesn’t want to get traded.
All right, my vote is officially for keeping Stubbs around in CF! At least while he’s hitting like this.
Since Votto has been down, Stubbs has been a totally different player. If Stubbs stays this hot, look out.
I’m thinking Stubbie wants to stay a Red!
They count that as a double?
yes, a double
The scoring decisions that always baffle me are the ones where the outfielder freezes for a couple seconds or takes a step or two in the wrong direction, then misses the ball by 3 feet. They’ll always call it a hit. Translation: “If you misplay a fly ball badly enough, it’s not your fault.”
That, ladies and gentlemen, was your NL Co-Player of the Week!
Ludwick! Gotta love that big guy!
Oh my.
And a big F U to Volquez!
CRUSH-wick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice!
There was a nice and interesting article on grantland.com today. The article described Dusty as “Quirky” and wondered if the Reds were winning because of, or in spite of Dusty’s Managing style. Its a good read. Ludwick is smoking red hot wow.
Yeah I read that article, but their conclusion was that we’ll never know. So IMO it didn’t really offer anything new.
Couldn’t ask for a better start so far.
Nothing I love more than taking a called third strike with a runner on third.
Boy have we seen this typ of 1st inning from Volquez…Looks like Ludwicky is looking for another day off tomorrow…
Stubbs going the other way for HR.. man I’m glad they’re back home.
damn, hate leadoff walks, especially after your team scores!
I gotta admit, I haven’t been a Stubbs fan the last two years, but the guy has really stepped it up the last couple of weeks. Never thought he was capable of it but I’m really glad to be proven wrong. Good for him.
Leake seems like he’s overthrowing all of a sudden.
walk, 2B, walk, after your team gave you three runs …
ericnyc….i wrote this reply in another thread. I hope no one minds a replay…..

@eric nyc:
I have seen it argued that when Cincinnati and New York were the only two cities to have 3 major TV/radio networks based in the same city, Cincinnati got more coverage nationally than it might have deserved. For instance, no netwoek had to bring in much equipment, and only the Union minimum number of employees, because Crosley/Avco had everything the network needed here ready for them. Broadcasting a Cincinnati home game was cheaper, and the major market teams seemed to play here a lot on the weekends.
Consequently, the Reds picked up an “America’s Team” vibe, albeit in a smaller way. Now it takes winning over a period of years ro draw national coverage away from the coastal teams.
Is it true that JBruce’s quote double unqote was not hit to Right Field?
Nope, was to center-left. He was going the other way in the last 2 games against the Rockies.
Wow. Mes just destroyed him.
that was a nice lead while it lasted …
Nice job by Mike Leake!
Leake is not fooling anyone…missing his spots and putting himself into hitters counts…Come on Leake!
Leake is flying open.
This ump seems to be calling a high strike zone.
@Mwv:
How nice is that? Marty was all over JBruce for “not remembering” to go the other way.
Dusty better get someone up pronto.
Man this is brutal, Leake just is falling apart this inning in a hurry.
Simon up now
very sad
Thats 2 balls tonight already that BP gets all the time…
Well, not much to say about that except.. at least this is the Padres we’re against. Plenty of time to come back.
All this time I thought walks clogged the bases.
this half-inning has lasted so long, maybe the bottom of the second will seem like the bottom of the first to Volquez
I wonder if the Reds were considering trading Leake? I’d say his trade value just took a nosedive.
Leake 49 Pitches – 25 Strikes – 24 Balls. That’s pretty craptastic.
oblique?
Oy vey….come on Redlegs!
I wonder if Walt is re-thinking a trade for a pitcher now?
I can’t wait to watch Alfredo bat.
Way to move that runner up Alfredo!
This concerns me. Volquez used to dig a hole for himself and then settle down, but the team wouldn’t support him with runs. He’s got a 2 run lead; if he settles down, he still has the gas.
Ok, that is frustrating. Ump just gave Volquez the strike that he refused to give Leake.
Can we really be mad at Simon for not knowing how to bunt? If the Reds batting lineup can’t, why should a reliever even try?
I don’t think anyone is mad at him over it. That was his 3rd at bat in the majors.
walking a .220 hitter ………………………again
I don’t know what is going on tonight.. the curse of Marty’s hair???
@Mwv:
I looked it up as well, because it honestly looked like the first time he’d held a bat. I can’t blame him, that’s more on the coaching staff, but if somebody doesn’t know how to bunt, why not just let him swing and see what happens? Especially after the wild pitch and no chance of a ground ball double play.
cubs score early vs. bucs, 1-0
Yeah, after the wild pitch I would have just told him to stand there and take pitches.
what the heck is going on, all these walks ….
You would think that these Reds pitchers are facing the 1927 Yankees?
I don’t understand where some of these pitches are missing.
neither does mesoraco, who is probably gonna be suspended for hitting the ump
I mean Mes is a beast, but that finger swipe would be tough to suspend him on.
Pete Rose got suspended 30 days for hitting umpire Dave Pallone’s finger with his nose.
Is Corky Miller ready to go then?
Anyone remember tonite’s Cubs starter Justin Germano. We got him and Travis Chick in the Joe Randa trade around 2005 or 06.
Cookie down the middle now.
What a nightmare of a game so far.
I don’t understand why a major league pitcher doesn’t know how to bunt. I understand Simon hasn’t been asked to hit in the majors, and I don’t blame the guy for not being great at it, but since when are major league at-bats the time to LEARN how to bunt? Don’t you practice things like this, you know, when you’re not pitching, which is most of your waking hours? I just don’t get it.
Paging Wilson Valdez. You’re needed at the mound.
So much for the winning streak. Wow!
well, simon looks like he has given up …
They’re going to have to bring in the ‘stache and tell him to just eat up the rest of the game. No real choice.
9-3 Padres goodbye win streak
Thank you, finally Mes. That needed done.
Wow, what a homecoming. Train wreck.
Call up Corky Miller for a few
That’s a suspension I’m fine with. Those calls were silly and I like seeing Mes fired up and defending his pitchers.
Why is Dusty not out there defending his player?
well, looks like mesoraco is gonna be suspended for a little bit.
Wow. Are you freaking kidding me??? He called -that- a strike???
I’m pretty sure what Baker said to the ump was “I agree with you, and I apologize for my player’s rude behavior.”
Ok, I better calm down and stop posting so much haha. What a game.
top of the third, this has been a weird game. if the reds can come back in this one, wow, what a fired up crowd that will be.
I’m not in the viewing area. Has the Ump really been that bad? When I’m watching, I’m one of the ones that will say it.
They’ve been pretty bad.
I’m pretty fired up so I guess I can’t objectively answer that.. but yeah, it’s been bad. He was not calling low strikes for Leake (or marginal outside strikes) which is fine.. if he wasn’t calling them for Volquez. Which he did.
I haven’t seen every pitch (thanks, Time Warner!), but from what I’ve seen, he hasn’t been terrible, but seemingly every single borderline call has gone against Reds’ pitchers, and I think that started getting old.
padres stealing with a 9-3 lead??
When Leake (like Arroyo) is off he is really off.
Anyone looking at the ESPN/MLB pitch tracker on some of these? There’s been a ton of misses but some looked like strikes.
Brandon misses a tag… !(#$#($#
Can these Reds get back 6 runs tonight?
can valdez pitch AND catch??
If the Reds come back and win this I’ll shave my head.
Nah, there’s no way the Reds will come back from a six-run deficit at home after a bad start by Leake against an NL West opponent.
Never gonna happen…
brantley making it sound like the ump was “setting up” mesoraco to make contact …
There is no doubt. He intentionally walked into his hand. Complete BS
If I was catching, I might miss a few pitches on purpose and let a fastball or two nail the Ump in the body. With no one on base of course.
Its not gonna show up in the scorebook…But that missed tag at 2nd is the 3rd play tonight that BP normally makes.. I believe these Reds got a wee to much home cooking last night or had a little too much fun on the plane ride home…. I smell a major comeback!
The good news…Cubs up 1-0 in the 2nd.
just have to be patient. strap in for a long game. see if they can chip away and get back into it. win one for mesoraco.
I saw the first couple innings and I think Leake was just off. I did not think this was due to the HP ump.
There the start of the come back.
Got 1 back. The comeback begins.
there’s one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
alright, there’s 1.
There’s one back. If our pitching can hold at all we can easily get 6 or 7 more runs this game. Volquez has not been sharp.
This is the kind of game that has you optioning someone to AAA to call up a fresh arm.
BRUUUUUUUCCCE!!! I sense a comeback….wouldn’t be the first times the Reds have come back from a 6 run deficit
Volquez is missing bad. The Reds need to be extra patient here
Wow, just checked the DVR. Mes got himself thrown out over that pitch? Could have been called a strike, but ball was a perfectly good call.
If there were other bad pitch calls, at least wait until a really bad one before getting tossed.
Hey Im just giving proper encouragement.
Sometimes sarcasm gets lost on the web, so just for clarity, my point was that the Reds have come back and won in almost the exact same circumstance already in the last couple weeks.
I really don’t want to lose to this guy TWICE this season. Sheesh …
@vegastypo: Brantley might get himself a fine from MLB if he keeps saying that about the ump…
simon taking one for the team
I’d say the team is taking one for Simon.
He’s right and they aren’t going to fine a broadcaster for saying that.
Dang. Ludwick swung at ball 4. At least they got 1 back.
Yeah that one was a ball if the pitch tracker thing is accurate. He did really fire up the crowd and hopefully the rest of the team but hopefully he doesn’t get suspended.
Just watched the Mes ejection on MLB.com. Didn’t look nearly as bad as Brantley described it on the radio broadcast. I could have sworn he said Mes knocked the ump down, but he barely touched him. Maybe I misheard him.
Jeez Simon’s worse than Leake. I know we’re not trying to burn all of our pitchers since we’re probably going to lose anyway but get him out of there so we have a chance. This game’s never gonna end.
I’d rather operate from a point of view that saving the bullpen is more important than using everyone on the hope that the Reds will score 11 runs in this game.
ok. maybe we’re not gonna come back.
If Alonso played the Reds every game, he’d be pretty good.
gee, make the .218 hitter actually put the ball in play and get an out, instead of walking him AGAIN
This is just…I don’t know.
I know with Voltron pitching anything is possible, but man, this looks bleak
This is one of those games where, if they can come back, it will seem like they can do anything.
Like, 1990 sweep the A’s anything.
i’d still like to see the Reds blow up his pitch count, make it hard for him to get through five innings ..
It is only in the 4th inning. Things can happen.
It’s hard to score 11 runs with a black hole like Cairo in the lineup.
Sure would rather have Frazier out there.
Reds make deal with Beelzebub: Win 10 straight in return for pitchers ever being able to find the strike zone again.
How getting Wilson Valdez warmed up? (on the mound) He’s unscored upon this year.
Cal Ripken Jr. played 2,632 consecutive games at third base and shortstop. Can anyone explain why Frazier needed today off?
Well I have been wanting to see Navarro for awhile now, guess that’s a possibility now.
I’m bearing witness to this catastrophe from the Fox Sports Ohio suite. Sitting next to Hall of Famer, Hal McCoy.
Give them our regards, please.
Wow, great seats, and they don’t make ‘em like Hal McCoy anymore.
The tv guys were defending the ump when I watched.
an ump who won’t call strikes, and a pitcher who can’t throw strikes. lovely combination
Eight walks. Yuck.
@Steve Mancuso: You sitting next to one of those hot blondes?
8 walks by reds pitchers tonight. what is going on?
Just a repeat reminder: The Padres @ Reds game is the free mlb.com t.v. game.
bray doesn’t look like the same pitcher he was last year.
New trade proposition: Leake for Cliff Lee? I’ll throw in Simon and Bray too.
If we lose this one, this badly, does Marty get an op out on the buzz cut?
marty is not on the broadcast tonight. is he off getting shorn?
Friday. The shears toll for thee, Marty Brennaman.
I don’t enjoy watching Bray pitch.
@zippy:
So no player needs a day off ever?
When did I say that? I must have been have been sleep-writing.
have been have been have been
Waste them all tonight, SD.
Maybe Yonder can get 7 doubles tonight, serve him up.
Latos and Mesoraco: Bash brothers 2k12 (?)
OK, get a few runs here ….
IF you are going to have a game like this, it might as well be the day before the trade deadline.
How many times has Stubbs struck out in the past week? 3 or 4, maybe? I just don’t understand how he can go through stretches like this and then go a solid week without making any contact. I used to think Bruce was the streakiest player I’d ever seen, but I’m not so sure anymore.
@zippy:
It’s a hit or a K with Stubbs. Just a lot of hits lately. Also about 10 K’s in the last week.
They were a quiet 10….
Volquez really unhappy about this strikezone too.
Go Cubs!
cubs 4, pirates 2
Googled Fairchild and found this out about the guy. Amazing that the Reds have such trouble with officiating. Hear Marty and Brantley all the time talking strike zones and Reds’ pitching having composure issues when the umps act like butts…
http://deadspin.com/5911627/better-know-an-umpire-chad-fairchild
one big swing of the bat from luds makes this a very fun game.
Cubs game is much more exciting to watch. Unless the REDS EPIC COMEBACK 2012/PART DUEX develops.
Stubbs needs to score a lot more to keep his streak alive.
Ludwick needs to be patient
Hit here and we’re back in it.
@zippy:
Heck, it was probably a best comment of thread post.
Ludwick looking for the fastball that never came. That hurt, but they got 1back.
@seat101: I do tend to write some of my best stuff while I’m asleep.
At least the AB Ludwick struck out in just now is meaningless as well as Venable’s 3 run triple is.
Whaddya mean we’re behind? This score is a wakeup call. This would be a heckuva comeback if they can somehow pull it off …
Rolen and Stubbs have been producing alot lately.
i’m still trying to wrap my brain around what marty is gonna look like with no hair
Anybody know how the SD bullpen is?
get two or three runs here, make it interesting!!!!
Good inning by Bray there.
Which is better than the typical 15 K’s in a week …
wow, 7-2 Cubbies???
Now they’re throwing Boxberger in our faces … Not cool.
Long story short Brantley said think Yoda, and you’ll get an idea of what Marty looks like with a shaved head. Through the magic of CGI Cowboy got a look at what Marty would look with a shaved head.
@zippy: Lol. K’s tend to be quiet.
Cairo looks like he could use a day off.
Actually, Cairo looks like he could use a career off. Enough already.
agreed. he’s helped the Reds the last few years, but it’s time to look elsewhere.
Man, Cairo has looked bad today.
Get the sense the wife is sticking pins in my voodoo doll. Seeya all later.
Another solid AB by Xavier.
Having Paul make it look like there is no need to look for a LH bat via the trade.
I really this Xavier Paul kid.
@George Culver: I wouldn’t go that far yet. Paul’s put together some nice ABs but I hope that’s not stopping us from exploring other options.
Cubs cannot be stopped. At least the Pirates don’t gain any ground today.
You know what to do Stubbs!
Here’s your chance, Reds. The kid is not throwing strikes. Patience, boys
Dang. 0-2 on Stubbs
Sheeze. 3 innings left though.
can’t say the Reds aren’t getting chances …
I know Paul’s career numbers aren’t that great, but that swing does look nice. Pretty short and quick through the zone… Let him work with Mr. Votto a bit, and he could get more consistent
Stubbs did exactly what Ludwick did last inning, come up with a few runners on and try to take a big chunk of their lead back with one big swing. No patience.
Steve, is that your dad in the blue hat and shirt?
Wasn’t Leake/Meso paired in our last 6 run comback? Dusty wan’t too happy with pitch selection after that one if I recall…..hmm?
nice, pittsburgh can empty it’s pen, too, losing 11-2 in the fifth
Thank Eric Bedard for giving up 9 in that one. He has been bad lately
whoa, and just that quick, 13-2………….
Pirates having a much worse night than us even: 13-2 bottom 5th.
Wow. The boys from Red Reporter getting a shout out from Thom–but Steve & Redleg Nation? Nuthin.
5 runs in 3 innings is not unheard of.
Bedard and Leake next Saturday. I’m there.
take your glove — or DUCK!
Welsh is currently informing us that if Meso is suspended, the Reds will be FORCED to play with only one catcher because they can’t replace the suspended player. Apparently he’s unaware that it’s possible to send someone else to the minors and bring up a catcher. Someone should tell him.
Or appeal the suspension to buy time.
That too. But, I mean, why do so many baseball announcers seem to know so little about baseball? Welsh is blathering on about who the emergency catcher is, apparently 100% certain the Reds will be forced to go with one catcher for as many days as Meso is suspended, and Thom just goes along with it. Between the two of them, it doesn’t occur to anyone that the Reds could send someone down for a few days?
@zippy: Who would they send down? Hint: First name initial is X?
I don’t know if that’s even right. I found this:
Players who were on the 40-man but are placed on the 60-day disabled list are taken off the 40-man until the time on the DL is over. The same applies to players who are suspended.
I believe he’s right that Meso couldn’t be replaced on the 25-man roster. But there’s no rule against bringing up another catcher to replace someone else. Obviously.
I did not know that.
Can you imagine trying to tell Dusty that he has to go with one fewer reliever during that suspension, or one fewer bench player? He’d go nuts.
Nice night for Jay.
@CharlotteNCRedsFan:
Actually, I think the first initial is A or B.
let’s get some guys on, give Frazier a shot…………….
Any kind of hit here, and we’ve got a ballgame.
cubs pitchers immediately in trouble after being given a lead. sound familiar tonight?
C’mon Luddy- make it interesting here!
I know we have left 2 on the last 2 innings, and may not score any more but I really like how this team keeps coming. No fight. Keep taking walks and hitting singles.
I wonder how a veteran like Rolen knows that with this ump a walk is almost a certainty?
Put Frazier in for Cairo!
painful
Cody Puckett hit his third home run in three games for Louisville, all with two outs in the ninth!
i sure hope frazier is getting lots of rest
What would ya say ya DO here, Miguel?
At least Frazier got that one more AB’s worth of rest. So did Heisey.
WWE RAW is taking place in Cincy tonite and they had a fire on the set before the show went on the air.
Sure glad Dusty played Cairo 2 days in a row. Man, he’s looked bad tonight.
His last 2 games as a Red. Great guy and has had a nice career. It has to end sometime. I wish him luck. I can see him as a coach somewhere.
No magic for Miggy this year……yet.
That’s frustrating. You gotta believe Super Todd would’ve had himself a few RBI’s tonight. Maybe not 5, but more than Cairo. No reason to have him out there.
He would have at least hit a ball out of the infield. I’m confident of that.
he’ll wait and use frazier next inning with nobody on.
I think he’s decided Frazier needs a whole game off. An at-bat will ruin it. I bet we see Valdez.
frazier bats in the ninth….
And…so much for the come back
Reed Johnson was pulled from Monday’s game and exchanged hugs and handshakes with teammates in the dugouts.
Media reports all agree that a trade has been consummated, though a destination and compensation has not yet been revealed. Cubs czar Theo Epstein did well to get whatever he could in this circumstance. Johnson, 35, has hit .307/.361/.452 this year. That slash line would be shocking except for the fact that he posted equal numbers last year. Johnson didn’t figure into long-term plans for the Cubs and needed to be moved for future pieces.
I wonder how long Miguel Cairo’s rope is? The guy is a slow, below average fielder with no power, and seemingly no other positive hitting attributes. Being a nice guy only gets you so far…
Jon Morosi @jonmorosi
#Reds expected to pursue Lyle Overbay, designated for assignment by #Dbacks today. Overbay can play 1B until Votto returns, PH after.
Retweeted by Barry Larkin Nation
That’d certainly be curtains for Miguel.
Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal
Told #Cubs have made separate deals with Soto and Johnson.
So, Meso is already gone? (Just kidding.) (I hope.)
@RedForever:
And I believe Cairo has qualified for a full share of any post season prize money.
Leake was very Leaky tonight. Simon didn’t say much. Bray walked three batters but none score( The Madres were probably tired out ). The curse of the Volcano is still on the Reds, they will need three cats to run around 21 times to get rid of Volcano’s curse. The old man Cairo got 3 KKK and Cozart could’t get the ball out of the infield….. on and on and on. on the bright side Stubbs is coming out of the Funky mode and good old Bruce also. Well, they can’t win them all because they will run away from the rest of the division. Get a good sleep and whack the Madres tomorrow. I think when Headley stole that base after the Madres were having a big lead, that was the turning point and the Wrath of the Reds will whip the Madres rearends tomorrow for sure! Go Reds
Hey guys, if I wanted to read tweets, I’d read tweets.
They are providing information. Jeez
None of those Cubs deals will involve the Reds. I also think Reds fans should instinctively cringe whenever they hear WJ has struck a deal with either the Cubs or Toronto.
Why? I trade EE for Rolen every day of the week. You really miss Travis Wood?
Would love to see us at least make this interesting. We’ve sure had our chances the last 3 innings.
Obviously it’s irrational speculation and impossible to predict but for what it’s worth…
A bunch of Pirates fans commenting on another website right now are very doom and gloom, saying the last two games remind them of the moment last year when the wheels fell off.
If we can take at least 2 of 3 from the Pirates this weekend I wouldn’t be too surprised if we can really start to open up a big lead in the division. The Cardinals might pass them and start nipping at our heels when they inevitably get hot down the stretch.
Not really basing that on anything other than it would be typical for the Pirates.
The fans aren’t playing.
Just said it again. “That would leave Ryan Hanigan as the team’s only catcher during Mesoraco’s suspension.”
Thom says nothing.
Seriously? You’ve had a couple inning to think this over, and you still can’t figure a way the Reds would have two catchers?
and that means nobody off camera is helping them out either.
Dear Dusty,
Please get Cozart out of the leadoff position.
Reds Fans
(and Zach’s mother)
(and Cozart himself. He can’t be enjoying this.)
Let’s hope no Reds catcher ever gets one of those 50-day suspensions, because the other catcher is going to be WORN OUT. Isn’t that right, Chris and Thom?
now THAT’S funny
I haven’t been on the thread til just now, and as much as it sucks to watch the Reds get thumped like this, it felt pretty good seeing that the Pirates are currently getting thumped even harder.
Geovanny Soto to the Rangers?
Lucky for us, the Buccos ALSO decided to make July, 30, 2012, OFFICIAL SCREW-THE-POOCH DAY. Regroup tomorrow and go GET ‘EM REDS!
my dog just winced
Todd frazier’s day off is not the reason why we lost this game.
no, of course not, but it would have been nice to have him pinch hit in the 7th, when a homer could have made it a 2-run game. If the Reds are keeping Cairo, try extra hitting or starting him another time, but don’t abandon trying to win tonight. That’s my 2 cents, just don’t ask for change.
How do you know? He hits a home run and a double with guys on base, and this is a completely different game.
Seriously, how can you know this? The first inning ended with Ludwick on third and Cairo striking out (for the first time). If Frazier is playing, who knows what happens right there? The Reds might have been up 7-0 by the time that inning ended. Completely different game if that happens. But we’ll never know, because he apparently needed a day of rest.
That’s OK, he wanted Scott Rolen to have two days off because they were playing at high altitude and Ryan Clark almost died.
By the way, I’m kidding.
Sure it wasn’t because Valdez did not start?
Jon Morosi @jonmorosi
Source: Paul Maholm and Reed Johnson dealt to #Braves.
What’s the Reds record when Drew Stubbs scores twice? (/sarcasm)
@RedForever:
I thought they were the “A ” Braves after they were the “M” Braves after they were the “B” Braves? Who are the “#” Braves?
@vegastypo:
Dusty needed to save Todd for the 16th inning as he is the # 3 catcher.
@zippy:
Todd told me.
Or was it the third inning as he is the #16 catcher?
@AnnapolisHoosier: Rolen deal wasn’t with Alex Anthopoulos as the GM (although one could argue that the Reds basically got lucky in getting ANYTHING out of Rolen in the first place but that’s besides the point). The Marshall deal will likely be a loss for the Reds. Set up men just aren’t valuable enough from a trade standpoint. A deal can be bad but also make the MLB team better.
They gave up nothing for Marshall and who is to say he won’t close next year. Rolen was a key player in them winning the division two years ago.
@AnnapolisHoosier: You’re not getting what I’m saying.
Alex Anthopoulos is one of the best GMs in baseball. He wasn’t the GM when the Rolen trade went down. Kike or hate the trade, his trade is a strawman in this context. It’s irrelevant.
Ditto for Theo. You realize you could make the same argument for trading all the non-good/elite Reds prospects down at AA or AAA for Sean Marshall? Like literally, all of them? The Reds have zero depth in their farm system or their starting rotation. The Reds have benefited substantially from tremendous luck in the injury department. I don’t think you’re properly valuing replacement level players v. set up men. This just isn’t a deal you can immediately grade in 2012…Torreyes is 19 lol.
“who is to say he won’t close next year” Surely you jest?
Ugh…weird unfortunate type. “Like or hate the trade…”
The whole Frazier thing isn’t rocket science. If you try to give him a day off, but need him to pinch hit, so be it. Maybe he gets a hit — even a homer — to pull the Reds closer, or he makes an out and goes back to the bench to finish his day off. … He’s a professional athlete. I have a hard time believing that a brief interruption to his otherwise day off would hurt him any. … I’m a little curious about the talk of the Reds going after Overbay. If the Reds get him, do they platoon him and Frazier until Votto gets back? And after that, Frazier is left with two games a week, with Rolen back primarily at third??
Frazier will only get one day a week. Dusty will decide he needs to rest on one of the days he might otherwise play, then he’ll be fresher for the game he does play.
Great song, describes the ump’s walk-into “bump” from D-Mez, and his resultant whining about “Dusty I want him gone…” He misses a bunch of calls, initiates contact, then cries about it…here’s an appropriate song – ban me if you will, but I’m f-ing right!
