Joey Votto anchors the National League lineup tonight in the All-Star Game, with Jay Bruce and Aroldis Chapman waiting in the wings. It’s important for the NL to win this game, obviously. Yeah, it’s a stupid way to pick home field advantage in the World Series, but Cincinnati will need that home field advantage in October. So…go NL.
Discuss the game here.

I’m rooting for the Reds players to do well but the American League to win so Tony goes out with a loss.
I would take Tony being hit by Chapman’s pitch though.
Looks like JV might actually have somebody on base when he comes to bat!
Verlander not missing many bats tonight. Also amusing is Joe Buck (ughhhh) discussing his pitch count. C’mon man, no way anyone throws more than 3 innings tonight!
And even more amusing was Jeter trying to act like a serviceable shortstop, no way he was gonna nail that mid-air throw to first.
Upon review, (I’m no fan of any Yankee) but the throw beats the runner. Feilder tried to catch the ball at his body. Votto would have made the play.
That curve to Votto was beautiful though. Verlander’s stuff is just unreal. His location tonight is terrible obviously but his talent is something to see.
@dc937:
Jeter would have made that play if Fielder hadn’t butchered it. Votto would have ate it up.
Nice D by the NL that inning.
That’s a clown catch bro.
Did the organist just play “Freeze Frame?”
Now, will Chapman be too excited to pitch well or is he going to mow Trout down?
Chapman v. Trout, this should be good.
Chapman is just trying to blow it by people instead of hitting his spots. But he still gets Trumbo. I’m so mad that this game is going on 45 minutes from where I live and I can’t be there.
Well the walk wasn’t the most desirable to see, but Trumbo’s swing and miss was pretty awesome to see.
Little too hyped up for great control but he still didn’t give them anything close to a decent swing at those fastballs. Glad he got to come in and play for his first all star game. I don’t think it will be his last.
One comment about the all star game: Yawn.
Let’s get back to playing real games.
Yes, and let the wheeling and dealing start even sooner.
I think the Reds will do something before Friday’s game. I hope it is new blood versus shuffling the chairs. If it is an internal move, Navarro might be interesting in a reprise of the old Javy Valentin role. Meso showed enough life on the west coast trip that I don’t see them sending him down now; so Navarro would have to take someone else’s place.
@OhioJim: For all they are getting out of Bray or Simon for that matter, maybe they should give an 11 man pitching staff a short term look to get another bat on the bench.
However they will probably keep Bray around basically just to keep the chair warm for Massett and disable Bray (yet again) when they are ready activate Massett.
I was thinking this exact thing the other day. With the way the starters are pitching, the bullpen isn’t getting enough work. We could get by without one of them. And it would be nice to have another bat on the bench – the third catcher perhaps.
@Steve Mancuso: BRING UP THE ‘STACHE.
Hopefully he can grow it out enough so they can just cut holes in the Mr. Redlegs head.
/kidding.
Rough All-Star game for the Reds. Oh well.
I don’t care much about the hitters going hitless. I would have been a little bummed if Chapman had walked both guys.
I was unhappy the year Volquez blew a 2 run lead late, leading to the NL’s umpteenth loss in a row.
@OhioJim: Navarro cannot hit like Javy Valentin. But any LHed bat (except Costanzo) would be more valuable than Cairo on the bench.
@RichmondRed: Love the “STACHE. He’ll come up in September to ensure that the Reds win the NL Central.
@pinson343:
Don’t say any…. Remember Willie Harris? I would take Cairo any day.
Big win for the NL. Now the WS can open at GABP.
Love this. Hope it happens.
Did anyone else notice that the only position player to NOT get into the game was Adam Dunn? That made folks mad at our house.
