Game two of the Reds-Twins series this afternoon. Many of you around the country will likely be unable to watch due to MLB’s archaic blackout policies. If you are able to watch on FSN Ohio, however, you may want to tune in early:
The Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame & Museum has an exciting weekend planned in celebration of the Reds Hall of Fame Class of 2012: Sean Casey, Dan Driessen and the late John Reilly.
The official induction of Casey, Driessen, and Reilly into the Reds Hall of Fame will take place at Great American Ball Park before the 4pm Cincinnati Reds – Minnesota Twins game this Saturday, June 23rd.
FOX Sports Ohio will feature a special hour-long Reds Live pregame show starting at 3pm to cover the pregame celebration and on-field ceremonies. Marty Brennaman will be the master of ceremonies on field, and Casey and Driessen will address the ballpark crowd.
Better yet, go on down to the ol’ ball orchard (as Joe used to say) and watch the festivities in person.
Here’s your game thread. Go Redlegs.

Cueto against the Twins bullpen, at home. If the Reds don’t win today, I will be concerned about how long the current funk will last.
At least Cueto will go after them with everything he’s got.
I’m not putting down the other pitchers, it’s like comparing Joey Votto with the other position players. He and Cueto both have an intensity and focus that I wish would rub off on the other guys. (I have no problem with Arroyo’s mental approach, but his stuff makes him unable to compete some outings.)
Let’s go Reds, it’s Reds HOF weekend, let’s make the inductees proud.
Congrats to Mr. Casey and Mr. Driessen.
I see by Fay’s blog where Dusty is saying they need to step and snuff this losing streak here and now. Amen. Get after it.
And congrats to the Rds HOF inductees.
Danny Driessen’s career is often tinted in the minds of many Reds fans by the memory that he “replaced” Tony Perez. Now on this day 30 some years later when we honor Driessen, let me pose this question. Does anyone even remember the name of any of the players who replaced any of the other 7 members of the “regular 8″ of the Big Red Machine??
I can come up with some combination of Ron Oester or Kurt Stillwell or Barry Larkin being the guy(s) who took at SS for Davey Concepcion; and, that it about it.
So Danny must have done OK in his own right for us to remember and honor him today
Ray Knight replaced Rose at 3B, I believe.
@Bill Lack: I think you are right. That one struck me even as I was hitting the “post” button.
Alex Trevino was the annointed successor to Bench in ’82. I think Cesar Cedeno was supposed to replace Foster. Dave Collins replaced Geronimo. Maybe Paul Householder in RF?
Maybe Junior Kennedy at 2b after Morgan left?
Treveino yes. Cedeno yes. Householder was a legitimate RF in my 6 year old eyes. I declared Cincinnati my team that summer, thanks in part to WTTV CH 4 carrying the games. Mario Soto was the ace, Johnny Bench hit a home run on Fan Appreciation Day in Sept. of that year. Saw the downside of Concepcion and Driessen, but didn’t know it at the time. Oester was likely in his prime. And Gary Redus offered up some hope. And Eddie Milner patroled CF.
Looked it up:
Driessen for Perez in’77.
Knight for Rose in ’79.
Collins for Geronimo and Kennedy for Morgan in ’80.
Joe Nolan caught the most games in ’81 (120 OPS+).
Householder and Cedeno took over for Foster and Griffey in ”82, completing the dismantling.
I thought Eddie Milner replaced Foster in LF.
Dave Collins was arguably a better player for the Reds that Geronimo (unless you’re taking peak value for one year)
How could I have forgotten Treviño and Cedeño? I was taking a Spanish course about then and used to chuckle at the ineptness of spelling their names on the uniforms as with an apostrophe over the “n” instead of a tilde. By the way it is ALT+0241 in most character sets to create ñ.
@Myles: When I fisr saw Collins’ name the thought crossed my mind of whether he is in the Reds HOF because he had some good years.
Cozart made those first two outs look awfully easy…
SRolen is playing a day (so-called) after a night game. Is this a good idea? I am of two minds: he’s well rested and (might) have a hot hand, vs he’s old andthere are no scheduled days off for a while.
He won’t be invited to by LaRussa to the All-Star game, so he can rest then, I guess.
Frazier won the coin flip for left field today? Should be interesting when Stubbs comes back. Then what will it be, cutting a deck of cards between Heisey, Ludwick and Frazier?
@vegastypo: Draw toothpicks… oddly enough, they looked for a deck of cards, but all the drawers and shelves they searched, all they found were tens of thousands of toothpicks.
Will Tony LaRussa choose Johnny Cueto for the All Star pitching staff?
@Steve Mancuso:
Yeah. Because it might hurt the Reds.
How does DH for NL work. Do you know?
Imean DH selection.
Nice hearing some of those long lost names…
Knight really raked after Rose left. mid .300′s I think
The cheapest cheap shot I ever saw was ray knight coldcocking Eric Davis.
Could somebody tell me how many of those little grounders Bruce has hit for an easy out over his career?
I wish MLB At Bat showed pitch count.
I need to mention that Knight is my least favorite RED of all time. Sorry, Mr. Lopez. forgot his real name. But he did rake for the REDS.
Tim Melton.
Nice comments by Casey today.
Too bad I tuned in to watch (and hear about) this baseball game.
Too bad we can’t have a rotation of Cueto, Arroyo, Cueto, Leake, and Cueto. At least we’re facing a starter with a decent ERA tody and don’t have to worry about losing to Nick “Uncola ERA” Blackburn.
Too bad we can’t try Chapman as a starter!
@hydeman: Knight was an ass, which really showed when he later became a coach and manager.
Casey’s comments about the trade are heartbreaking. It really tore him up.
@seat101: True.
FRAZIER!!! THE LEGEND!!!
I’m a huge Casey fan. But as a broadcaster He stutters way too much and talks to fast.
Defensive showcase this inning.
Some nice fielding today.
@hydeman: Not so much a stutter as talking faster than his brain can process.
I am starting to dislike Sean Casey ’cause I want to get him off the set!
I can’t believe that play by BP. was that guy really out?
Sheeeeeeeesh “Another half inning” ?
I guess I should be grateful it’s not another half hour!
@hydeman: I wonder if the ump felt compelled to call him due to the barehanded play.
The contrast of Casey’s speed talking and Cowboy’s slow draw is funny.
Excellent!!!
Good BYE! Nice BP
What kind of manager would Scott Rolen be?
@Y-City Jim: good queation.
Hard to say, though. Would he be like many great players who can’t manage players who aren’t like them? Or would he transcend that?
Frazier not so great there.
Generally the most relevant conversations I’ve heard about this have determined that he really is most inspiring when he’s playing. As a manager, you don’t always have the benefit of leading by example, something that Rolen is really known for. I still think he’d make for a smart/good manager, but I don’t know that his perceived strength as “a clubhouse guy” would translate as well as it might for others because of the nature of that strength.
@Swatch:
Well said. That’s what I was thinking.
Damm! Rolens gettin hot! Blows all my theory’s
Old man hits triple. He is still breathing hard.
Rolen seems respected by everyone but TLaRussa. He would need some coaches who smile more.
Cards already won, Pirates winning 3-0.
it would be nice if pitchers could hit sac flies…
@Myles: Frazier not so great there.
Agree. If the rookies don’t start getting men in from third with less than one out the Reds won’t be in first place for much longer. Their lack of production in such situations has been beyond ugly of late.
This is not that hard! and They are all having a tough time with it. I remember in 10 that was a real strengh for us. 1st to 3rd and getting the runner home from 3rd with less than 2 outs
@kywhi: Oops. I meant to say less than two outs.
Ha ha ha ha ha.
Sweet.
Bizarre play.
Doesn’t look like Cueto’s going to go nine innings today, at 80 pitches in the fifth.
Not the way the HP ump is calling them.
So how many marriages is that for Brennaman?
These guys have no intention of talking about todays game anymore do they?
Bruce is due a big BLAST!
NOT!
Keep it up, Rolen!
1st to 3rd returns!
Rolen seems to be moving well on the bases in addition to his solid stroke.
100 pitches and theynaren’t pinch hitting?
Crickets
I fell asleep on the couch. Good thing Dusty hasn’t needed our help managing so far today.
Cueto needs a pay raised and bailey needs to get the Paycut.
As the “Big Guy” from WKRP said “As God Is My Witness I Thought Turkeys Could Fly” Well as God is my witness I thought today’s game started at 7:10pm. Dag gonnit. Better late then never I suppose. Did I miss much?
Rolen’s batting average up to .209
@RedLeg75: ’83 I’m talking about.
time to practice getting the run home from 2nd with nobody out.
That’s the way Frazier!
(not really what I had in mind but we’ll take the run)
Marty’s a prankster, he likes to make ya think you lost the audio with his long silent pauses.
after the error, they had men at 1st and 2nd with nobody out… two harmless fly balls later there are men at 1st and 2nd still, and then Cozart struck out. apparently it’s just going to be a thing this year.
@RedLeg75: If Ron Oester had played in either Crosley or GABP, he would have been a 20+ HR man. He hit more warning track outs than anyone I remember.
Do you think the Reds will win a big one while Baker is at the command? Only when the donkey flies!
41,750 turned out for today’s titanic struggle.
Way to put a stop to that losing streak, time to start a long winning streak now. Cueto is da man for sure. Go Reds. I’m pretty sure tomorrow is a day game, but I’ll definitely double check to make sure. Adios Amigos.
Iwoll say, withou fear of contradiction, Ron Oester is the most over rated Red od all time!
Ron Oester was a damn good ballplayer and anyone who says different can be wrong.
@RedLeg75:
Check his stats. He was better than Jeff Jones, Ill give you that.
I don’t give a care what you give, Ron Oester was a good ballplayer. If the Reds didn’t have Phillips, I would take an Oester in his place over 2/3rds of the league.
Oester was a below average hitter for a 2nd baseman. I don’t know how good his defense was; it seemed above average to me. You don’t get “good” out of that though…
Yes, you do get good out of that, if you saw him play. I did see him play, and he was good. Nothing anyone says can change my mind on that.
@RedLeg75: OK by me. I’m not trying to change your mind.
But in general, the “I say he was good just because” isn’t the strongest argument. I don’t see how a below average hitter for a position plus anything gets you to “good player”, unless you’re talking about Ozzie Smith maybe.
Logic does not apply here, it is Ron Oester we’re talking about here. I understand now why Baker does what he does sometimes. Smilely emoticon, rolling its eyes, shrugging its shoulders.
