Bronson Arroyo will be a Redleg in 2011

Bronson Arroyo’s option has been exercised. It’s semi-official, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports:

As expected, #Reds officially exercise Arroyo’s $11M club option. GM Jocketty has said he will try to sign Arroyo to extension.

We’ve already said that an extension is probably a bad idea, but I’m very happy to have Arroyo back in the fold for 2011.

I’m less excited over the fact that the Reds have reportedly exercised the option on LF Jonny Gomes. I love the big guy, but he was one of the two worst left fielders in the National League last year. If he is anything more than a bench player for the 2011 Reds, we may be in trouble.

For what it’s worth, I also hear that the contract options on Aaron Harang and Orlando Cabrera were declined. No big surprises there, but all that should be official very soon.

I don’t want Gomes back either, but at 1.5 Mil or whatever he’s making next year it too good not to. It also opens up the option for trading him in some package for someone.

I’m not a fan of the Arroyo extention either but it looks like it’s going to happen. It’s sort of hard to argue with the reigning Executive of the Year.

All of this is as expected. In that sense, no new information here.

WJ told Fay that, as far as OC goes, other decisions have to be made first.
Janish ought to get a shot as the starting SS next year, and I don’t believe OC would be happy with a utility IFer role. Plus I don’t trust Dusty to use OC properly. So, nothing personal against OC, but I hope he’s not with the Reds in 2011.

Another Spring rooting for Soft-J to win the everyday shortstop prize. Hope it happens in 2011, and hope he continues to improve at the plate.
Much attention was given to the “chemistry” between Cabrera and Phillips, but Janish seemed to click with him fine as well.

The difference between a Rolen extension and an Arroyo extension is that Arroyo’s won’t give us payroll flexibility but rather take it away. He won’t be taking a home town discount, so it would make trading him (when presumably our young pitchers render him unnecessary) that much more difficult.

Ah, the sweetest music to my ears: “Aaron Harang will not be re-signed”. I just became an even bigger Reds fan. Let’s hope we see him on the mound for an opposing team several times next year.

Exercising the option for Arroyo is good business. He’s a stable, intelligent, quality starter whose best asset just might be giving advice to the young Reds pitchers. He’s essentially an extra pitching coach and you get the extra bonus of him being an above average workhorse pitcher. Not to mention the hair.

While 1.5 is cheap for Gomes, as someone else put it better than I could–the problem is the opportunity costs the team will bear for having him on the roster. I don’t see any reason why Heisey can’t be just as productive as Gomes and be still cheaper. And he can’t be worse with the glove. I’m not saying Heisey is the answer, but if they think Gomes is the answer, Heisey is a better choice.

Amen. I love Gomes, but Heisey is a better player.

Ah, JTMs. I live in Indiana, so it’s not so much of a staple. I went to (played for Coach Pont at) Mt. St. Joseph, however, and I think we ate JTMs four times a week. Good times.

  • @shadow32:

Is there ever any evidence that this “he’s like an extra pitching coach” stuff is ever actually true?

  • per14

I’m okay with the extension of Arroyo as long as he starts making JTM commercials again.

  • shadow32

@Brien Jackson: Certainly no hard evidence, only what I’ve heard on the telecasts and the radio. Obviously, those announcers paint a pretty picture of the situation most of the time (especially when the Reds are winning).

Fact is, however, having a veteran pitcher who has been through a lot of different situations can do nothing but help the young guys. Not to mention the hair. There’s no indication that Arroyo is an a-hole or that he *isn’t* willing to help coach up the young guys. So, I’ll assume the best until we’re shown otherwise!

Have I mentioned yet how glad I am that Harangutang is officially gone?
