One out, bases loaded w/ Braves. 1-0 ATL.

    Initiate transformation into Good Bronson.

This game’s going to be over quickly without a Houdini escape here.

What an awful start from Arroyo and the Reds. Thankfully, Alex Gonzalez limits the damage, but you can’t give away outs like the Reds just did.

    ReplyReply
  • Dave Lowenthal

    Tomorrow’s matchup has Volquez. Yikes.

Houdini like escape enabled. Thanks, AGon.

On the bright side, it’s not as if the Braves were shelling Arroyo. Lot’s of softly hit balls for the Braves, along with a walk.

This is a big national game for the Reds… I hope this doesn’t get ugly fast. We did catch a couple of bad breaks, so the damage could have been worse.

Yankees went ahead and got Kerry Wood as well. The Braves picked up Kyle Farnsworth and Ankiel from the Royals.

This lineup is weak. I just have a bad feeling about this game. I thought they’d win yesterday.

Heyward had the ball before OC even reached third.

    TERRIBLE COACHING, TERRIBLE BASE RUNNING.

    ReplyReply
  • Dave Lowenthal

I’m not watching, but you risk that out with Rolen on deck? He’s one of the few guys that can hit. Just stupid.

    ReplyReply
  • Kyle

What a first inning. An error, a fielder’s choice that loads the bases, a walk with the bases loaded, and now Cabrera gets thrown out easily at home. Brutal.

    ReplyReply
  • nvilleredsfan

That was so dumb with Rolen on deck. Last time I checked, OC is not Drew Stubbs and Berry just cost us a run.

It’s the Reds regular lineup. I don’t understand.

    ReplyReply
  • Barnes

4 pitch 2nd for Good Bronson. That works.

    ReplyReply
  • Matt WI

Ok, the OF’s are up. Time to redeem themselves for the collective O’fer last night. I’m looking at you Bruce, Stubs, Gomes.

    ReplyReply
  • Barnes

Bruce took that one the other way. Sometimes that means he’s getting locked in. I hope so.

    ReplyReply
  • Ben Rutler

    Or not.

    ReplyReply
  • Kyle

@Matt WI: 1-2-3 on 8 pitches. I think they still have some work to do.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris Garber

So they’re going to force Kevin Millar and his hair on us for a while now?

    ReplyReply
  • Barnes

Heisey would be better than Strikeout Stubbs right now. If Dusty’s gonna keep playing it this way, I’m gonna keep pointing it out.

    ReplyReply
  • Ben Rutler

Good thing that wasn’t Encarnacion trying to field that ball hit to 3rd.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris Garber

@Barnes: That outfield is really frustrating me. For whatever reason, I may sit Gomes down first. Probably b/c the other guys can at least play defense and will take a walk.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris Garber

Cabrera gets more bloop hits than anyone I’ve ever seen (catching up on Tivo).

    ReplyReply
  • Chris Garber

Millar says Votto is “most feared” hitter in the NL right now. That qualifies him for the Jim Rice Wing of the HOF.

    ReplyReply
  • Kyle

Reds again in a lot of trouble.

    ReplyReply
  • Barnes

@Chris Garber: Sure, Heisey for Gomes. Bat Hanigan second (or leadoff), Stubbs 8th. Or just give Dickerson some games in CF to clear Stubb’s head.

I’m not real pleased with Jocketty’s inaction at the deadline. EVERY other team in the race did something to improve (even if it was just the Giants’ clearing Molina for Posey).

I don’t understand doing nothing at the deadline unless they are just praying for this year and optimistic for next. But, as we all know, there are no guarantees for next year. St. Louis’ rotation is going to be pretty solid when they get Lohse back.

Maybe, uninformed speculation here, Walt’s thinking “Let’s see what Dusty can do with his guys, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll just get a manager I can work with easier.”

We still have a loaded farm system, and things are looking pretty sweet for the future. I would like to see the Reds make the playoffs and see what could happen, but I would love to see them win the World Series two or three times in the next five years. Dusty’s a good man, I’m sure, but I just don’t think his lineup management and handling of the starters and bullpen skills are good enough.

  • performances that could affect the team

Isringhausen has pitched 2 games at AAA and gotten rocked.
Springer has pitched 7 games allowing only 4 base runners
Harang is going to start his rehab
Bailey’s 1st start at Dayton was a little rough but after not pitching for that long I expect it will take him a few starts to get back
    Dickerson is destroying AAA

Ha. I also liked how he joked around with Gonzalez about how impressive it was to hit 17 Hrs in “a tough division.” A division that includes Baltimore (hitters park), NY (hitters park), Bos (hitters park), and Tor (slight hitters park).

Cleary, worse teams have won it. But they have a nucleus, especially on the mound. They just need to trade things they can’t use (a 7th good starter, Yonder Alonso) for things they need (shortstop, LF)

@Dave Lowenthal: Yeah, they really need to address the outfield situation. I can live with Cabrera at SS(I know I’m wrong and the only one on here that thinks that, sorry), but they’re getting absolutely nothing but strikeouts from Gomes/Stubbs/Bruce right now.

    ReplyReply
  • @Dave Lowenthal: I 100% agree.
the Reds could use a SS but they love Cabrera and NEVER play Janish
the Reds could use a LF but they love Gomes and NEVER play Heisey
the Reds could use a CF but they don’t play Heisey there
they have an excess of starting pitchers so the only help would be a big time ace
the bullpen is the only place I think they could have easily improved the team

  • Chris Garber

@Dave Lowenthal: I do think they think Cabrera is good, but I’m not sure they weren’t looking for an OF upgrade.

Here’s the thing: Forget our own desire for action for its own sake. How many guys out there do we KNOW are going to be significant upgrades over Gomes? Such that the trade would be worth the (1) prospects, (2) money(?), and (3) clubhouse effect? Cody Ross doesn’t do it. Corey Hart doesn’t, unless you’re sure he’s 100%. Dunn? Non-starter, and they want a ton anyway.

Do you think this franchise has the talent to win a a World Series in the next few years? I don’t see it.

Absolutely. Right now, we’re a playoff team. Another year or two of honed skills from Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, Phillips, Heisey, Hanigan, Frazier, and Francisco. Major trade chip in Alonso. Next year’s rotation: Volquez (should have any command problems from the surgery worked out by ’11 [see F.Liriano], Arroyo (team option for ’11), Cueto, Wood, Leake. Chapman has been pitching well lately, and they say he’s in the rotation next year. Rotation is solid. The “ifs” are can Rolen do this two more years, SS (major concern), and putting together a bullpen, which is always a year-to-year chore. Bullpen pieces are there though, just need some tweaking. Not sure about Cordero.

Way down the line, Billy Hamilton SS, Yorman Rodriguez OF, are teenagers with major league talent.

I’m thinking the pieces are there for big time winning if the cards are played right.

But I don’t look at as “who is better than Gomes”, because I put Gomes in a platoon if you trade for someone who’s say 20% better than him.

As was pointed out earlier they are 27-27 since the end of May. If management are planning for next year I am okay with that. I just don’t know how they could think they would okay in October as is. I really do wonder if they were concerned with messing up the team chemistry. Which IMO is a bogus reason to stand pat.
