What a first inning. An error, a fielder’s choice that loads the bases, a walk with the bases loaded, and now Cabrera gets thrown out easily at home. Brutal.
@Barnes: That outfield is really frustrating me. For whatever reason, I may sit Gomes down first. Probably b/c the other guys can at least play defense and will take a walk.
I’m not real pleased with Jocketty’s inaction at the deadline. EVERY other team in the race did something to improve (even if it was just the Giants’ clearing Molina for Posey).
I don’t understand doing nothing at the deadline unless they are just praying for this year and optimistic for next. But, as we all know, there are no guarantees for next year. St. Louis’ rotation is going to be pretty solid when they get Lohse back.
Maybe, uninformed speculation here, Walt’s thinking “Let’s see what Dusty can do with his guys, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll just get a manager I can work with easier.”
We still have a loaded farm system, and things are looking pretty sweet for the future. I would like to see the Reds make the playoffs and see what could happen, but I would love to see them win the World Series two or three times in the next five years. Dusty’s a good man, I’m sure, but I just don’t think his lineup management and handling of the starters and bullpen skills are good enough.
Isringhausen has pitched 2 games at AAA and gotten rocked.
Springer has pitched 7 games allowing only 4 base runners
Harang is going to start his rehab
Bailey’s 1st start at Dayton was a little rough but after not pitching for that long I expect it will take him a few starts to get back
Dickerson is destroying AAA
@Truman48: Yeah, it’s kinda disheartening to see Walt not make any moves when it seems like every other division leader geared up for the home stretch. I think they must be hoping we are more lucky than good.

Do you think this franchise has the talent to win a a World Series in the next few years? I don’t see it.
This Gonzales love is embarassing.Just pathetic.Millar:“Alex Gonzales has won games in the post-season.”Tell that to Steve Bartman.
Ha. I also liked how he joked around with Gonzalez about how impressive it was to hit 17 Hrs in “a tough division.” A division that includes Baltimore (hitters park), NY (hitters park), Bos (hitters park), and Tor (slight hitters park).
Do you think this franchise has the talent to win a a World Series in the next few years? I don’t see it.
Cleary, worse teams have won it. But they have a nucleus, especially on the mound. They just need to trade things they can’t use (a 7th good starter, Yonder Alonso) for things they need (shortstop, LF)
Do you think this franchise has the talent to win a a World Series in the next few years? I don’t see it.
Votto, Bruce, Heisey, Hanigan, Cueto, Volquez, Chapman, Bailey, Wood, Phillips, Frazier, Alonzo, and Leake I think could be good enough to build a team around
The key is when you have an excess of above average starting pitchers you can do a lot. I think if I was Walt I would have been planning for 2011 all along. Will Rolen have anything left next year? And obvious SS and LF are major concerns but that’s where we can spend the money
From Fox19 via Twitter-Just announced in the press box GM Walt Jocketty would be available to media after the game. What might that mean?? I’m sure this means nothing, other than to discuss the non-moves. Just kind of curious what he has to say.
I said for a while that this team was a (relatively) difficult one to help via trade. Of course, a lot of that is because the stupid brass thinks that Cabrera is good and Gomes/Stubbs/Bruce are a fine OF.

I hope that you are right. That their is in fact a play. And one that involves making them better and not just treading water.
@Dave Lowenthal: Yeah, they really need to address the outfield situation. I can live with Cabrera at SS(I know I’m wrong and the only one on here that thinks that, sorry), but they’re getting absolutely nothing but strikeouts from Gomes/Stubbs/Bruce right now.
@Dave Lowenthal: I 100% agree.
the Reds could use a SS but they love Cabrera and NEVER play Janish
the Reds could use a LF but they love Gomes and NEVER play Heisey
the Reds could use a CF but they don’t play Heisey there
they have an excess of starting pitchers so the only help would be a big time ace
the bullpen is the only place I think they could have easily improved the team
@Dave Lowenthal: I do think they think Cabrera is good, but I’m not sure they weren’t looking for an OF upgrade.
Here’s the thing: Forget our own desire for action for its own sake. How many guys out there do we KNOW are going to be significant upgrades over Gomes? Such that the trade would be worth the (1) prospects, (2) money(?), and (3) clubhouse effect? Cody Ross doesn’t do it. Corey Hart doesn’t, unless you’re sure he’s 100%. Dunn? Non-starter, and they want a ton anyway.
Do you think this franchise has the talent to win a a World Series in the next few years? I don’t see it.
Absolutely. Right now, we’re a playoff team. Another year or two of honed skills from Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, Phillips, Heisey, Hanigan, Frazier, and Francisco. Major trade chip in Alonso. Next year’s rotation: Volquez (should have any command problems from the surgery worked out by ’11 [see F.Liriano], Arroyo (team option for ’11), Cueto, Wood, Leake. Chapman has been pitching well lately, and they say he’s in the rotation next year. Rotation is solid. The “ifs” are can Rolen do this two more years, SS (major concern), and putting together a bullpen, which is always a year-to-year chore. Bullpen pieces are there though, just need some tweaking. Not sure about Cordero.
Way down the line, Billy Hamilton SS, Yorman Rodriguez OF, are teenagers with major league talent.
I’m thinking the pieces are there for big time winning if the cards are played right.
@Chris Garber: I completely understand…and also, Cabrera isn’t that bad relatively (to other SS’s).I.e., he’s below average, but not the worst. But I don’t look at as “who is better than Gomes”, because I put Gomes in a platoon if you trade for someone who’s say 20% better than him.
As was pointed out earlier they are 27-27 since the end of May. If management are planning for next year I am okay with that. I just don’t know how they could think they would okay in October as is. I really do wonder if they were concerned with messing up the team chemistry. Which IMO is a bogus reason to stand pat.
June 19 they started talks with C Yasmani Grandal. August 16 is the deadline to sign. Both Leake and Alonso waited until that deadline to sign the year they were drafted.
I bet Escobar would’ve made that play. But when you can sell low on a 27 year old, excellent fielding SS to buy high on a 33 year old SS having a career year, you have to do it.
@Dave Lowenthal: Yeah, I know… here’s to hoping though. I like Stubbs and with his speed, one would like to think he has some serious potential. I’m not quite ready to put him in the Corey Patterson category yet.
They just replayed that grand slam that ATL had earlier in the year. Nix should have flat out caught that ball. He had it in his glove and it popped out over the fence.
@Truman48: Looking at his game log, Cordero has shut down opponents far more than he has blown up. Even recently, before last night, he’s been excellent.
Good last pitch… OK, that’s a good job and have to give Cordero credit there. Good win, Reds. Too bad the Cards are playing the Pirates tonight in STL.
The way things are starting out, maybe better never than late…
One out, bases loaded w/ Braves. 1-0 ATL.
Initiate transformation into Good Bronson.
This game’s going to be over quickly without a Houdini escape here.
What an awful start from Arroyo and the Reds. Thankfully, Alex Gonzalez limits the damage, but you can’t give away outs like the Reds just did.
Tomorrow’s matchup has Volquez. Yikes.
Houdini like escape enabled. Thanks, AGon.
On the bright side, it’s not as if the Braves were shelling Arroyo. Lot’s of softly hit balls for the Braves, along with a walk.
This is a big national game for the Reds… I hope this doesn’t get ugly fast. We did catch a couple of bad breaks, so the damage could have been worse.
Yankees went ahead and got Kerry Wood as well. The Braves picked up Kyle Farnsworth and Ankiel from the Royals.
This lineup is weak. I just have a bad feeling about this game. I thought they’d win yesterday.
Heyward had the ball before OC even reached third.
TERRIBLE COACHING, TERRIBLE BASE RUNNING.
I’m not watching, but you risk that out with Rolen on deck? He’s one of the few guys that can hit. Just stupid.
What a first inning. An error, a fielder’s choice that loads the bases, a walk with the bases loaded, and now Cabrera gets thrown out easily at home. Brutal.
That was so dumb with Rolen on deck. Last time I checked, OC is not Drew Stubbs and Berry just cost us a run.
It’s the Reds regular lineup. I don’t understand.
4 pitch 2nd for Good Bronson. That works.
Ok, the OF’s are up. Time to redeem themselves for the collective O’fer last night. I’m looking at you Bruce, Stubs, Gomes.
Bruce took that one the other way. Sometimes that means he’s getting locked in. I hope so.
Or not.
@Matt WI: 1-2-3 on 8 pitches. I think they still have some work to do.
So they’re going to force Kevin Millar and his hair on us for a while now?
Heisey would be better than Strikeout Stubbs right now. If Dusty’s gonna keep playing it this way, I’m gonna keep pointing it out.
Good thing that wasn’t Encarnacion trying to field that ball hit to 3rd.
@Barnes: That outfield is really frustrating me. For whatever reason, I may sit Gomes down first. Probably b/c the other guys can at least play defense and will take a walk.
Cabrera gets more bloop hits than anyone I’ve ever seen (catching up on Tivo).
Millar says Votto is “most feared” hitter in the NL right now. That qualifies him for the Jim Rice Wing of the HOF.
Reds again in a lot of trouble.
@Chris Garber: Sure, Heisey for Gomes. Bat Hanigan second (or leadoff), Stubbs 8th. Or just give Dickerson some games in CF to clear Stubb’s head.
I’m not real pleased with Jocketty’s inaction at the deadline. EVERY other team in the race did something to improve (even if it was just the Giants’ clearing Molina for Posey).
whew
Nice escape from Bronson.
@Chris Garber I agree. I would have liked to see us make some kind of move.
I’m hopeful that Jurrjens is going to have some control issues this game.
????????? Strike?
I don’t understand doing nothing at the deadline unless they are just praying for this year and optimistic for next. But, as we all know, there are no guarantees for next year. St. Louis’ rotation is going to be pretty solid when they get Lohse back.

performances that could affect the team

Harang is going to start his rehab
Bailey’s 1st start at Dayton was a little rough but after not pitching for that long I expect it will take him a few starts to get back
Dickerson is destroying AAA
I sure hope this game doesn’t end up being a 2-0 loss. That would be pathetic, and on national TV as well.
This Gonzales love is embarassing. Just pathetic.
Millar: “Alex Gonzales has won games in the post-season.”
Tell that to Steve Bartman.
I’m not a fan of Thom Brenneman, but Kevin Millar is flat out awful.
@Truman48: Yeah, it’s kinda disheartening to see Walt not make any moves when it seems like every other division leader geared up for the home stretch. I think they must be hoping we are more lucky than good.
Gonzalez == Cabrera
Do you think this franchise has the talent to win a a World Series in the next few years? I don’t see it.
Ha. I also liked how he joked around with Gonzalez about how impressive it was to hit 17 Hrs in “a tough division.” A division that includes Baltimore (hitters park), NY (hitters park), Bos (hitters park), and Tor (slight hitters park).
Nice highlights in Millar’s hair.
Cleary, worse teams have won it. But they have a nucleus, especially on the mound. They just need to trade things they can’t use (a 7th good starter, Yonder Alonso) for things they need (shortstop, LF)
I’d take Cabrera over A-Gonz any day. Someday we’ll have a young, stud SS again.

This looks like another Reds shutout special. Wainwright at home against the Pirates tonite I think..yuck.
Rolen!
Breaks his HR drought to make it 2-1.
HR!
There goes the shutout… Nice hit Rolen
Hah! I reverse-jinxed the Reds again.
They are going to lose 2-1.
@Dave Lowenthal: Not if Scott Rolen has anything to say about it.
Holy smoke. Gomes actually didn’t swing at the first pitch. Then we have Millar making comments on Rolen’s hair. That’s irony at it’s best.
I said for a while that this team was a (relatively) difficult one to help via trade. Of course, a lot of that is because the stupid brass thinks that Cabrera is good and Gomes/Stubbs/Bruce are a fine OF.
I think I would sit Gomes for a game or two even though Bruce and Stubbs are struggling. At least you would have good defense in the OF.
Direct TV has the goofiest ad agency of all time
I hope that you are right. That their is in fact a play. And one that involves making them better and not just treading water.
I hope that you are right. That there is in fact a plan. And one that involvees making them better and not just treading water.

Off topic, anyone out there with non HD tv’s not getting the score in your upper left hand corner? It’s annoying the hell out of me.
The fact that Omar Infante was named to an all-star team DOES NOT mean that the Braves “have an all-star as a fill-in guy.”
Absolutely. Right now, we’re a playoff team. Another year or two of honed skills from Votto, Bruce, Stubbs, Phillips, Heisey, Hanigan, Frazier, and Francisco. Major trade chip in Alonso. …and Devin Mesoraco C, and the C they drafted this year out of Miami.
@jdarts: No, but the non-HD Fox affiliate is running the full 16:9 image, letterboxed.
@jdarts: YES! Driving me nuts.
@Barnes: Did they even sign that guy?
@Chris Garber: I completely understand…and also, Cabrera isn’t that bad relatively (to other SS’s). I.e., he’s below average, but not the worst.
But I don’t look at as “who is better than Gomes”, because I put Gomes in a platoon if you trade for someone who’s say 20% better than him.
I don’t think they have yet. I’ll look it up.

I really do wonder if they were concerned with messing up the team chemistry. Which IMO is a bogus reason to stand pat.
Offtopic…I live in the metro Indy area on the west side. We just had a bald eagle fly over the field behind our neighborhood. VERY COOL!
June 19 they started talks with C Yasmani Grandal. August 16 is the deadline to sign. Both Leake and Alonso waited until that deadline to sign the year they were drafted.
Holy Cow is this offense confounding.
Cabrera basically hit that as far as he can and it ends up being a long out. At least Votto and Rolen get to hit next inning.
Right now that run that Arroyo walked in in the first inning is looming pretty big right now.
What is it with our pitchers hitting the other team’s pitchers?
All right, now LET’S SCORE SOME FREAKIN’ RUNS!
OK, here’s our inning to tie it or go ahead. Votto, Rolen, Gomes and hopefully a lot more.
@renbutler:
I second your request.
Unfortunately, often known recently as “2 on, nobody out…but no runs.”
That pitch was SICK.
Dang.
It’s time for Gomesy to be the hero…
Now someone knock his butt in!
Gomes Adams needs to get things going.
Very good. Single to RF, hit hard. I approve.
All right, time for Brucey to be the hero…
Time to get large, young Jay.
Wasn’t Millar touting Heyward’s “unteachable” arm accuracy earlier? He almost hit the bull with that one.
squeeze
Okay, time for Stubbsy to be the hero…
Wow. Not hit well, but well-placed and a hit.
@Chris Garber: that’s a great Bull Durham reference… and you are right.
Stubbs is so stinking due.
Jurjenns has gotten some crazy calls today. Has to be driving the Reds hitters nuts.
Man, if Stubbs could just get a walk right here..
He should’ve hit that change 500 feet.
Someone needs to teach Stubbs how to hit a breaking ball. If he learned that, he could probably be a decent hitter.
@Ben Rutler: And now he’s even stinkier…
@nvilleredsfan: I haven’t noticed anything too outrageous for either team so far.
Hanigan!
OMG!
NO WAY THAT JUST HAPPENED… Hanigan is the man…
Hanigan is the MAN!!!!
Worst … throw … ever!
I cannot come up with words for this…
That was absolutely insane.
He does not deserve to be damned to the 8 spot.
We need about 3 more runs so Coco can’t blow it. Great job of hitting this inning. Gotta love these Reds
Maybe this can be like the Rockies’ 8th inning against the Stupid Cubs last night: 12 runs on 13 hits, including 11 straight hits with two outs!
Great Job Ryan. I agree why can he not hit in the second slot?
Phillips (.209 in July) is SOOO due.
Does Kevin Millar just have a handbook of cliches with him in the booth?
He dropped the ball!!
The greatness of A-Gonz!
@nvilleredsfan: A lot of hitters have not amounted to anything because of that…it’s not like it’s a simple fix.
Pedro Sorrano?
I bet Escobar would’ve made that play. But when you can sell low on a 27 year old, excellent fielding SS to buy high on a 33 year old SS having a career year, you have to do it.
Someone tell me Cordero is unavailable this evening.
@Truman48: I’m fine with Cordero.
If it’s 15-2.
@Truman48: If Cordero is called on this evening, I have confidence that he will take care of business for the Reds.
@Dave Lowenthal:
Is that a Major League reference?
“hats for bats”
Bruce and Stubbs continue to stink. Bruce didn’t hit it especially well.
I am the last person to criticize K’s, but Stubbs is ridiculous.
Fortunately, our 4th best hitter in the lineup came through!
@Dave Lowenthal: Yeah, I know… here’s to hoping though. I like Stubbs and with his speed, one would like to think he has some serious potential. I’m not quite ready to put him in the Corey Patterson category yet.
I didn’t see the box score. Did they credit Hanigan with an inside the park HR or just a hit and an error?
I really appreciate your unbridled optimism. You seem like a great person (I will forget the PU part).
They just replayed that grand slam that ATL had earlier in the year. Nix should have flat out caught that ball. He had it in his glove and it popped out over the fence.
@nvilleredsfan: Double, which was clearly correct.
@nvilleredsfan:
That game scarred me emotionally. Can we win this one a forget about it.
@Truman48: Looking at his game log, Cordero has shut down opponents far more than he has blown up. Even recently, before last night, he’s been excellent.
@renbutler: thanks for the clarification. I agree it was the correct call but sometimes I’m amazed how official scorers will rule on things.
Double and 2 RBI. Hanigan takes third and home on the worst throw ever (E8).
@Barnes: You are so right… that was the worst throw ever and I’m sure Cox is pretty darn steamed that Cabrera was laughing about it afterward.
@nvilleredsfan: Those guys laughing on the field will be running laps or something. Do teams still have kangaroo courts?
Looks like A Gon will lead off the ninth for ATL. That might be a big break for us.
Thom makes an interesting observation. I know, but seriously, might Masset get the ninth today?
@Barnes: You have to wonder…
Nice job by Masset. He has been very good lately.
Booing Cordero in the bullpen. Come on. How does that help the team?
Nice play by Janish there.
On Gomes’ foul ball down the third base line. Got up out of his chair and played the carom off the wall perfectly.
I know, dead horse.
You give Cordero a gift…terrible hitters coming up…and he can’t have an easy inning even then.
Same part of the order as last night. One more.
Never easy with Cordero… I’m hoping he gets it done.
Home run threat up.
If he blows this game that should be it for him.
Too much outside corner. They’re looking there.
That’s more like it!! Inside corner.
Finally! They beat those bums.
This one’s a lot Arroyo…great game by him, overcoming some flukes and fielding miscues.
Good last pitch… OK, that’s a good job and have to give Cordero credit there. Good win, Reds. Too bad the Cards are playing the Pirates tonight in STL.
Did I mention I cannot stand Cordero?
Tied for first!!
Ren FTW!
Thanks to my unresolved issues from the 95 NLCS, the Braves are still my fave team to beat. Hope we don’t get shut out tomorrow.
