How about a little love for Logan Ondrusek? With the problems we’ve seen out of the Cincinnati bullpen this year, several of us have noted how good Ondrusek has been since returning from AAA. Wait until you see the numbers.
Through April 21, when Ondrusek — who made the Opening Day roster — was optioned to AAA Louisville:
9 games, 12 hits, 10 earned runs, 5 BB, 4 K, 11.25 ERA.
From June 2, when Ondrusek was recalled to Cincinnati, until now:
20 games, 12 hits, 2 earned runs, 13 K, 3 BB, 0.96 ERA.
Wow. Kudos to the kid. He’s been great lately.

He definitely deserves Kudos, he has pitched great. I worry that as a rookie, he will suffer from overuse though. Since the ASB, he has pitched in 3 of the 4 games, while Micah Owings has yet to see the field.
You gotta like the tilt he gets in his delivery and the downward plane his size creates. Couple that with the aggressiveness we’ve been seeing, and you get some pretty solid numbers. That said, I’m real hesitant to use him as our RH setup man (assuming Masset continues to flail) in the heat of a pennant race. That would be setting him up for failure IMO. Walt seems to be doing the right things by taking flyers on battle tested veterans. Surely one of them will pan out.
He’s been great and this has to be a great boost for his confidence. Sometimes a little confidence that they can get guys out at this level can go a long way to throwing effectively.
At AAA, Burton hasn’t allowed a run 6 relief appearances, covering 8.1ip, 5 hits, 3 walks, and 10 strikeouts.
Russ Springer has made 2 relief appearances for Louisville. 2 shutout innings, 1 hit, no walks, 1 strikeout.
While we’re at it… How about throwing Jordan Smith and Nick Masset some love as well. Smith was called up from AA, which many people questioned, and I openly mocked. Aside from one rough outing against the Cubbies, which happened to lose the game, he’s pitched really well. Dating back to June 16, Masset has made 13 appearances and has given up 1 earned run.
No love for Masset here. His peripherals have been decent, but his locations are still off and his ability to throw all his pitches for strikes is still problematic. And he has such good stuff too. I don’t get it.
Good mention of Burton. He’s been very good at AAA, and righties are only hitting .181 off him.
If Logan can continue to mature over the next season or two, I could see him as a closer type down the road.
Great, you have given him the Masset, Burton, Wagner jinx!
No question he has filled a huge hole. For all the talk of needing a RH reliever (and I was on that bandwagon), I wonder who we would send down at this point. Owings, give how little he has pitched?
@CaptainTonyKW:
Throw in Scott Williamson too, being the Reds “next closer” has really been a curse.
