I’m told that the Reds are going to make their first cuts of the spring today: Danny Dorn, Alexander Smit, Chris Denove, and Brandon Yarbrough are going to be reassigned to the minor league camp.
I’ll be over at the Goodyear practice area this morning and will see if I hear anything about this there. Was planning on watching the major league team take BP and watch some of the minor league guys in their workouts.
[...] like the Cincinnati Reds will be soon making their first spring cuts as according to Chad Dotson of Redleg Nation, the team will reassign four players to their minor league camp. The players in question [...]
I like Dorn, but I don’t think it’s a lack of respect. He has to know with all the other prospects ahead of him that he’s going to have to hit his way on to the team. A .794 ops in AAA isn’t going to cut it when you have the likes of stubbs, frazier, heisey, francisco, and maybe alonso fighting for the same spots.
I’m sur ethey told him to go to AAA a hit the cover off the ball. If he does, the fans will be clammoring for him by June.
Did you really expect him to make the team out of ST? If so, I think you’re alone. If not, why do you care? If he goes to the Minor League camp he’ll probably get more action and more oppotunity to shine. There’s no lack of respect unless you expected him to make the squad, and I don’t think you did.
Last year was the first year that Dorn didn’t KILL the ball. His career OPS in the minors is .884, his career OPS vs RHP is .948 He went 1-3 with a HR and was sent down. I’m not saying he should have made the team, but he should have been invited to ST last year, wasn’t protected (put on the 40 man), and then was sent down in the first round of cuts. Why bother to invite him to camp?
@Bill Lack: On Rosecran’s blog, Baker is quoted as saying he was very impressed with Dorn, he just wanted him to get more action, which he’ll get in Minor League camp.
i agree with you bill, i think dorn has potential, but as a 17th rounder he’s going to have to prove it at every level. i’m sure he knows that. if he can match his career ops in louisville, he’ll get his shot.
and here’s the thing about not protecting him: no one took him in the rule 5 draft either, so if there’s a lack of respect, he’s getting it from all 30 teams, because no one thought he was worth a 25k gamble to stick in the majors this year.
as for why he was invited, i imagine it was just to let the major league coaching staff see him, and from the report it sounds like they were impressed.
I’m with Bill in that I think Dorn should have been given more of a look
as I mentioned in another post, it seems this spring Baker is throwing his starting lineup out there almost every day. That somewhat means Baker had already made up his mind who the main guys are for LF
Gomes has the most plate appearances on the team this spring
it looks like Gomes and Dickerson are the main guys
then Heisey, Balentien, Frazier, and Sutton
Nix, Anderson and Dorn aren’t getting the PA
Dorn was 1 for 3 with a HR.
to me it looks like the OF will be Dickerson/Gomes/Balentien, Stubbs/Dickerson, and Bruce but we knew this before spring started. I don’t think Heisey will really be given a shot
The complete lack of respect for Danny Dorn in the Reds organization astounds me.

@Bill Lack: AGREED!

This is a none issue, IMO.
