Reds avoid arbitration with Jared Burton

This seems like good news:

The club and relief pitcher Jared Burton agreed to a one-year, $810,000 contract, avoiding arbitration. Burton was the last remaining arbitration-eligible player. The sides were to exchange figures Tuesday.

“It worked out well,” Reds general manager Walter Jocketty said. “They’re happy. We’re happy. It’s good to get through the arbitration process. Now, we can start thinking about baseball.”

Always good to avoid those arbitration hearings, I say. I’m a Burton fan, and I expect him to have a big bounce-back year in 2010. Hope I’m right.

I like them not going to arbitration. I like Burton and really hope this year he comes back strong. I say he has a lot to prove this year otherwise will be non-tendered at the end of the season.

The way he came back after the arm problems shows what kind of a competitor he is. He had a fantastic showing the latter part of the season. Glad to have the pitching staff stay intact so far.

Seems like a good # for both sides. On to spring training!

  • Seems reasonable, but I sure would like to see him go a year without an arm/shoulder issue.

Burton is coming back? Great! This means I’ll have to wipe up more drool from my tv as my wife seems to have a crush on Mr. Burton.

I hate when they do arbitration hearings because sometimes it takes to long and sometimes it goes the player’s way.

I think the ERA was inflated a bit because he kept taking the ball w/ a fatigued shoulder. I expect a good bounceback season as well.
Speaking of injuries, what is the status of Bill Bray??

I, too, am a fan of Burton’s. I agree with the Sultan that he played some last year with a bum shoulder. Hopefully, this year will be lights out.

I am an even bigger fan of Bill Bray’s. When healthy, he can be a dominant reliever from the left side. Unfortunately, he has struggled to stay healthy.

  • We haven’t heard from the FO about Bray, but they kept him on the 40-man roster all season, and through the offseason. They must be optimistic that he can contribute this year.

I hope that he has a bounce back year too! Got to pull for all of the Western Carolina University guys!

Yeah, the ruggedly handsome type or something. Daughter likes him ’cause he uses his middle name for his everyday name, like she does. It helps that he can throw the ball, too.

Not sure if anyone saw this, but it looks like the Reds will see alot of a this former Red in ST.

On January 5, 2010, Kearns signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians with an invite to spring training

Good deal for the Reds, now Burton has to go out and pitch well throughout a season without any injuries. If Massett and Burton both progress and Bray can contribute this season this bullpen could be really, really good.
