A quick tour around the interwebs….
–Oh. My. Goodness. You have to watch this. (Huge tip of the cap to Craig.) It’s ten minutes of footage of dead-ball era baseball, including an outstanding look at the 1919 World Series featuring our Redlegs (about 2 minutes in). Awesome.
–Jeff Passan says the Reds have reason for optimism. I can’t believe I’m inclined to agree.
–Mark Sheldon has a good piece about the Reds increased emphasis on international scouting.
–John Fay is looking forward to one particular aspect of spring training.
–Doug Gray spoke with Mark Serrano, the Reds’ sixth-round draft pick in last year’s draft.
–Jamie Ramsey talked with Paul Janish.
–Finally, a post by Joe Posnanski that I’ve been meaning to link for a while; it’s about Strat-o-Matic, and the recent set of player cards that were released featuring Negro League stars. It’s a must-read, especially if you are a Strat player.
And yes, I’m going to get back to our Strat-o-Matic Reds dream series between the 1990 and 1975 Reds. Game three will be posted this weekend.
–Oh yeah, one more thing: I’m with Coco.

Chad, thanks for posting the vid! Your one word description, awesome, is right on. 2 random observations:
1) Amazing to see all the people dress up to come out to the game. Men with white shirts, ties, and jackets. You don’t see that in church anymore!
2) In spite of deadball vs. liveball, etc. Baseball really hasn’t changed much over the years. Yeah, the junior circuit has the DH, but he still has to hit the ball. There’s no big change like the forward pass or the 3-point shot and 24 second clock. Baseball, at it’s best, is pure and simple. Isn’t that one of the reasons why we all love the game so much? “I love this game.”
And to preach, Mariano Rivera in 1999 said, “I love this game, but I love God more.”
Jeff Passan doesn’t sound too optimistic to me, and the comparison to the Nationals really irks. The Reds suck a lot less than they do, both last season and in general.
But Fay’s article brings up a good point: Spring training is going to be as exciting to follow as that year Josh Hamilton emerged. Can’t wait.
@Travis G.: I agree. Great call about the Nationals comparison… it made me pause as soon as I read it in the article. Passan issues cautious optimism at best. Anytime the season hinges on the idea of “if everything goes just right…” you’ve probably got issues.
Great video. I love the pitchers from that era. Their delivery looks so much different to me than today’s pitchers.
I think “cautiously optimistic” is exactly how I feel going into this season. Which is exactly how I’ve approached the last 7 or 8 seasons.
That’s a great interview with Soft J… I really hope he can become a decent ML hitter to go along with his defense. If that happens, this could be a good team.
Good video Chad and what optimism!
What an excellent interview with PJ! He just seems very level-headed. Congrats to him on his recent marriage. That’s a good enough reason for missing Redsfest! Let’s hope Dusty bats him 8th and he hits somewhere near his minor stats.
Yeah – remember when we were wondering about his absence from Redsfest — I guess a honeymoon in Aruba is a pretty high priority.
…and the old footage is cool — breathtaking, really.
Conan + old timey basball.
