Using this as an open thread, I just saw this on cnnsi.com. Behold, salary caps aren't what they are cracked up to be:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Columbus may have trouble holding on to the NHL's Blue Jackets because the club has been losing $12 million a year in central Ohio, according to a report released Thursday by a business group.

The report from the Columbus Chamber offers a variety of options for strengthening the hockey team's financial position, such as new taxes or fees to support it.

I have been several times in the past (even ran into Chris W. once :D )but don't plan to go this year. It's definitely worth attending and making a weekend trip out of it. There is plenty for your children to do but if you are intested in autographs (which my adult son was) it takes a bit of strategy deciding which line to get, figuring the layout of the venue, etc. Some lines are only for children so you'll have an edge over some people. You can definitely find some bargains on Reds merchandise. I enjoyed some of the stage events and it was nice to sit down, but the concert scene was not for me. I think one of the best parts is standing in line chatting it up with other "crazy fans." And of course there are cheese coneys.

With the gambling issue passing, and the plans to build a casino in Cincy, does that help or hurt the Reds?

If you are not into the "autograph" scene, then there are "stage" presentation throughout the day with players, coaches, managers and others that can be interesting. If you are lucky you might be able to pick up some nice reds stuff for discounted prices plus check out some neat memborilla. You could in the past get your picture taken with players and such. It's just a nice day to take in and enjoy the Reds.

Suggestions is tough to give because there is a lot going on. I won't lie, I mostly go for the autographs from the players. However I only get minor leaguers/new to the majors guys because the stars are almost impossible to get. Its interesting to walk around though and follow guys like Jocketty to the different radio booths to hear what he has to say (there are multiple radio stations who will do live shows from Redsfest and will talk with players/coaches/GM on air). There is always the 'ask the manager/GM' stuff on the big stage, but the questions are usually lay ups and even the tough ones don't get the answer you were looking for because they aren't going to throw anyone under the bus with thousands of people listening or just give you a generic 'baseball answer'.

Such a positive analysis of Bruce after a disappointing season is in line with my high expectations for him for 2010.

Sorry this is off-topic, but it is such an encouraging piece about Jay Bruce from today I had to share it.

Like Chad, I'm very interested in hearing recommendations for what one should see/do at Redsfest since this will be my first year, too.

I've never been to Redsfest, but I decided this year to volunteer for one of the shifts on Friday. Looking forward to seeing what it's all about. The enticement of asking Dusty Baker a question is practically motivation enough!

BTW, not sure if anyone was watching, on Keith Obermans MSNBC nightly show he listed the top 9 smartest plays in WS history. Coming in No. 5 if I remember right was the Reds/A's series game where Bench was caught off guard at the plate expecting to be intentionly walked only to have the A's catcher dive back behind the plate to catch a called 3rd strike.

His No. 1 smartest play...

Johnny Damon stealing 2nd then 3rd the other night.

I hope to go on Saturday this year. I missed last years but did attend the year before. It is a interesting site. I have had the opportunity to attend the White Sox's version back in 2002 and liked the way the Reds have set up now. There is a huge difference between how it is put on now compared to how Linder and company did it. It's a lot of glitz and show. You can see a bunch of players, get some autographs, ask some questions of different pannels (like you "could" ask Dusty why he continued to put non hitters in the No. 1 and No.2 slot) which would be interesting to hear.

You can find some nice deals on Reds items and such and there has been in the past memboribila dealers there also. I think it's a fun time, it's great for young kids and fans.
