The Final Game Thread of the 2009 Season

Finally, our long regional nightmare is over.

Well, not quite. Our Redlegs are working on a nine-year losing streak, so that nightmare continues. But the bad dream known as the 2009 season will conclude today.

Fortunately, we’re getting a great big dose of a rosy future today, since the new and improved Homer Bailey will be making the start. In the last three months, ol’ Homer has given us plenty to get excited about.

Discuss Homer and Joey and Jay here in the final game thread of 2009.

Anybody think the Reds will continue their late-season flurry next year??? Here’s to Homer pitching this well all of next year, to Jay hitting 40HR and Votto to being MVP! Here’s to a winning season next year! GO REDS! I will miss you for months, even as you dissapoint me.

Thanks to the editors of this blog for letting me know there are other people out there who follow the Reds as closely as I do. Even if it is a painful experience. Thanks guys for all the time and effort that make this my first stop for all things Reds.

Thanks Chad and collegues for maintaining this site and giving us a chance to keep up on the team even tho not near Cincinnati. Since some of the people who comment here actually know something about the team and provide some insight into the game, you are especially valuable to those of us in Cubs-Cards-White Sox country.
BTW, I think Marty has gotten full of himself in recent times. But I disagree with many here as I think that Jeff Brandtly provides many good insights and word pictures of the action. I would like to hear more of Jim Kelch

Good luck today Homer and the Reds. And thanks to Chad, the editors, and all contributors to this site. I’ve really enjoyed Redleg Nation this year. I learned a lot, laughed a lot, and appreciated having some fellow fans to talk to about Reds baseball way up here in Wisconsin. See you around the hot-stoves.

Yeah, good arms in the infield. (I didn’t know Pittsburgh had the best defense in the NL..?)
And Janish with the best fielding pct. in baseball… Cool.

I guess.. seems he stopped playing guitar and the pain and weakness subsided some so he’s gonna go back to play and then stop again before the season starts. Seems like a temporary solution to me but if it keeps him pitching like he has been pitching for the last couple of months, I’m all for it. Too bad that not singing isnt the solution lol

Just found this site late in the year. Been a Reds fan since the late 1960’s (yeah, I’m old – 51). Love reading all the detailed stats info. Thanks to all who post and those who make it possible. Let’s hope the offense and starting pitching give Cordero plenty of opportunities next year! Go REDS!

not sure if you were being sarcastic about Pitt’s defense
they have a below average defense

interesting that only 2 of the 6 best defensive teams in the NL made the playoffs. Colorado and LA

That’s why I asked the question — ’cause I swear I heard the talking dudes say that.

I’m rarely wrong  but it must’ve been something else they were sayin’…

pitching out of a jam again! Homer may live up to the hype next year with improved efficiency :o

I like this for next years team: 1b-Votto, 2b- Phillips, ss-Janish/Frazier, 3b-Rolen/Fransisco, C-Hernandez/Hanigan, OF-Bruce, Stubbs, Nix, and Gomes
Starters-Harang, Arroyo, Cueto, Bailey, Volquez/Travis Wood (lefty, and a good one at that so far…this kid looks tought)

Some say Soto is more valuable working with young pitchers in the D.R.

Well… Last spring, a lot of thought Harang would rebound, Cueto would just get better, Volquez would push 20 wins, Arroyo would be Arroyo and Bailey might just break through.

And that Mr. Bruce would be a factor.

Hmmphh! Stuff happens. If it hadn’t, they might, maybe, just possibly, have contended fot a wild card slot.

    C’est la vie.

Double play! Gotta love Janish at shortstop. With Rolen and Janish on the left side of the infield and Phillips anchoring the right side, just gotta love the D. The pitchers now know they don’t have to strike out every batter. Add in Stubbs and Bruce and the outfield is strong defensively, too.

  • Great coverage this year, Redleg Nation! I always come here first for all my Reds’ related information. Thanks for the hard work!

Predictions: Dave Duncan comes in to be pitching coach, Dusty bats Willy leadoff opening day and I throw up inside my heart because of it.

I’d say, “See you in Sarasota!”
    …but I won’t. :x

But I am looking forward to 2010, here at the Nation and even for the Reds. I’m always optimistic by the time pitchers and catchers report, and who knows? All that great potential on the Reds’ roster may actually come together into a pretty good team next year. I can dream, can’t I?

Janish is a likable guy with good leather but if Dusty keeps batting (note I didn’t say hitting) him in the 2 hole next year I’m gonna go CP/WT nuts! If there is a gaping hole needing filled for next year it’s at SS. But I’m thinking if Alonso doesn’t get traded sometime next season we’ll see Votto Stubbs and Bruce across the outfield.

    ReplyReply
  • RedinFla

I’m hoping Janish will beef up a lot this winter, and work on hitting and come back a solid .265 8)

With good pitching and stellar defense, the Reds wouldn’t be desperate for high-octane offense.

the most hopeful bunch of people I’ve ever seen

unless the Reds hire someone who can add or (note I didn’t say and) subtract the Reds have no chance.

    Currently the Reds don’t understand
    the difference between
    Taveras and Stubbs
    Janish and Gonzo
    110 and 120 pitches
    Bruce and McDonald
    Hernandez and Hanigan
    a BB or an out
    or winning and losing

good luck….but CF-SS leadoff by rule, is well, ignorance and ignorance doesn’t win.

Can we hope that Taveras will be traded? That’s the only hope we have because we’re apparently going to be stuck with Dusty. If we have Dusty we’ll have Taveras so that will be the next step to nothingness. Taveras needs to go and Stubbs must be the centerfielder. To me Dusty is not going to change. The only thing we have to look forward to is when Dusty’s time is up.
