Reds interested in Bill Hall

It appears that Walt Jocketty, fresh from making a good deal, is interested in Bill Hall. Yes, the same Bill Hall who has OBPs of .265 and .293 in the last two seasons.

Sheesh. I know Hall has been a Reds-killer, but don’t the Reds have enough players who can’t get on base? Give Hall to Dusty Baker and he’ll be batting second in no time.

    Only if he’s the SS.

Could this be insurance for Rolen? As an all purpose utility guy I wouldn’t really mind (except the price tag might be steep for that), but as a starter I don’t think so. Didn’t we already trade this guy? Oh, that was Jerry Hairston Jr. Got a little confused. So will Dusty.

What is the point of getting rid of crap players if you are going to replace them with more crap players?

Why is Taveras starting tonight? There is a RHer on the mound for Washington.

JJ Hardy would make sense to give a shot if we could get him, Bill Hall not so much.

Assuming Rolen is coming back this season. Where would Bill Hall play? Would the Reds be paying the minimum for him with Milwaukee picking up his contract or are the Reds on the hook for that piece of !@#$ the Brewers signed?

  • I was looking at Hall’s numbers the other day, and it appears he ceased to be a useful player once he lost his speed after he injured his ankle in 2007.

No thanks, not even for the veteran minimum.

I figure they would want Hall to pretty much be Jerry Hairston Jr. Dusty probably feels a bit dry and in need of marination without a no-hit shortstop he can play everywhere. I suppose we could be glad it isn’t Neifi Perez.

I think between Sutton, Rosales or someone else in the minors, we probably have this “utility” guy covered at a discount.

You’re right Earl we’ve got a team full of utility players.

Yes, as water circling down a toilet.

Dealing for Hall is STUPID!!! Period…He’s owed WAY TOO MUCH $$$.

But, waiting for Hall to be released…Having MIL on the hook for the bulk of his contract…And then getting him at the pro-rated minimum for the rest of the season…

Well, That’s a smart short-term move,IMO…Why not take a flier on another “change-of-scenery” guy (if it only costs the pro-rated min)?? If he breaks out of his multi-yr slump.. Great..If not, you didn’t spend much to get a look-see & ya show him the door.

  • Except Hairston wasn’t a shortstop. Even in the minors he played 2nd base. Same with Keppinger.

I’d be fine with Sutton and Rosales as the infield utility players especially if it would keep the likes of Hall away.

Meh. I’m mixed about this. For the minimum, I wouldn’t care that much, but only if the Reds fill their gaps with actual players and don’t rely on Hall for something. Unfortunately, I think they will rely on him.

Guys the Reds could’ve had for the pro-rated minimum but didn’t sign them, and then they went elsewhere and were fine:

    Gary Sheffield
    Bobby Abreu
    (others?)

I’d say no way! Although his power off the bench could be useful. But with Baker, you know he’d be at SS batting 2nd.

Hall would be a great acquisition….if he was playing the Reds every day.

    Another foolish consideration.

  • Abreu was not available for the veteran minimum. His contract with the Yankees expired, and was not terminated, and Anaheim signed him to an incredibly affordable one-year, $5 million deal when the market collapsed for players like him. He would not have accepted those terms with the Reds.

If you look at Hall’s numbers, he clearly hasn’t been the same player since 2007, when he badly injured his ankle leaping for a ball against the OF wall. His line drive rates and BB/K rates are all within his career norms, but his speed rating is down considerably, and so are his AVG and OBP. When a player whose game relies on speed loses that, he’s no longer a very useful player (see: Freel, Ryan).

Bill Hall sucked against every team but the Reds. And that is reason enough not to sign him.
