Game Thread: Natinals at Reds — 2009.08.14

Reds match up with the Natinals again tonight at Great American Ballpark.

Lineup below the fold, with Paul Janish batting second. Good job by Walt Jocketty to get rid of Alex Gonzalez, but now Dusty Baker is going to do his best to make us dislike Janish. Why cant Dusty just put the bad hitters at the bottom of the lineup?

Discuss the game here.

Taveras CF
Janish SS
Votto 1B
Phillips 2B
Nix LF
Gomes RF
Rosales 3B
Tatum C
Harang P

Because Dusty doesn’t want to clog the bases in front of Votto and Phillips, Chad. Don’t you know? Clogging the bases is bad! :)

Because in Dusty’s mind, all SSs are supposed to be fleet of foot and good contact hitters who can move runners along.

Never mind actually checking to see if your SS actually fits that description. Or for that matter, if you lead-off man can actually get on base.

Janish wasn’t good enough to even play once a week but now that he is the everyday SS he bats second?

The only beings on this planet dumber than Baker are the ones who continue to employ him.

What would we prefer for the lineup?
We don’t have a #2 hitter on the team (activate roster). Don’t even think about considering Phillips a #2. In a decent lineup, he’s a #5 or 6; in ours, he’s a #3 or 4.

The Red Sox think they picked up a good defensive SS. Who are their scouts? The Reds broadcast team?

I have a question…What is there left to see in this lost cause season that would be incouraging leading into 2010?

I think the only thing that would be really incouraging would be for Jay Bruce to come back for the last 25 games and get his average over .225 and hit a few out of the ballpark.

Other than that and Votto getting it together and competing for a Batting title, I think there’s nothing really to look forward to.

It’s funny Dickerson isn’t playing tonight because Dusty’s reasoning for playing him on Tuesday was because Dickerson hit better than Taveras against RHs.

Nice job by the Reds defense up the middle right there. Janish completely faked out Morgan. That was pretty funny, actually.

ReplyReply
• Re: Is there a single thing Taveras does well?

He’s an OK base stealer. This season just above the 67% success rate to make it worth it

and despite all our bashing of his defense (which is valid) his pure speed means he actually does cover lots of ground so his defense is at the very least average or slightly above average. Sure he takes terrible routes, has a terrible arm, and misjudges balls over his head but overall he’s not a horrible defender. It’s clear he has a tool (speed) but doesn’t know how to play defense but his speed is good enough to be handy in CF

Take your pick…

2009 8 Willy Taveras / Alex Gonzalez / Adam Rosales / Paul Janish / Darnell McDonald / Drew Sutton / Craig Tatum / Danny Richar

2008 8 Corey Patterson / Paul Bako / Paul Janish / Scott Hatteberg / Norris Hopper / Adam Rosales / Wilkin Castillo / Danny Richar

2005 8 Ray Olmedo / D’Angelo Jimenez / Aaron Holbert / William Bergolla / Luis Lopez / Miguel Perez / Andy Machado / Dane Sardinha

1997 8 Bret Boone / Pokey Reese / Curtis Goodwin / Brook Fordyce / Eric Owens / Pat Watkins / Aaron Boone / Pete Rose

and here are the big ones
1988 11 Dave Collins / Bo Diaz / Dave Concepcion / Herm Winningham / Terry McGriff / Eddie Milner / Leo Garcia / Buddy Bell / Ron Roenicke / Van Snider / Marty Brown

2003 10 Reggie Taylor / Ray Olmedo / Ruben Mateo / Felipe Lopez / Brandon Larson / Stephen Smitherman / Eric Valent / Mark Budzinski / Jim Chamblee / Dane Sardinha

1993 10 Jeff Branson / Dan Wilson / Greg Tubbs / Tim Costo / Cesar Hernandez / Willie Greene / Tommy Gregg / Brian Koelling / Keith Hughes / Keith Gordon

I don’t care how many times Votto has struck out in the game, you don’t send a slow pitcher from third base. You keep the bases loaded for your best hitter. Especially when the starting pitcher seems like he’s on the ropes.

It’s the 3rd best Reds offense since the BRM (1994 & 95 were probably better)

with Dunn, Jr, Lopez, LaRue/Valentin, Randa, Freel, Casey and Kearns the team could afford to carry a couple offensive stiffs, which they did

lets see

Taveras
Dickerson
Votto
Phillips
Bruce
EE
Hernandez
Gonzo

note: surprisingly the above lineup is the most common lineup for the Reds this season.

• Matt, you ask my favorite sort of question

“what is the worst offense in Red’s history?
Are we coming close?”

lets take a look
First, since 1980 the current seasons looks to be the worst. The only season close is 1982

here are RC/G compared to league average
RUNS CREATED/GAME YEAR DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE
1 Reds 2009 -.92 4.11 5.04
2 Reds 1982 -.80 3.62 4.42
3 Reds 2003 -.70 4.45 5.15

a slightly better comparison is EQA
.243 2009 (tied for worst in baseball)
.247 1982 (23rd in baseball)
.252 2003 (23rd in baseball)

so far the 2009 offense is the worst Reds offense in the last 30 years

looking at the last 50 years the above 3 offenses, 2009, 2003 and 1982 are still the 3 worst

we are halfway, how far back do we have to go to find a Reds offense worse than this year?

oh! possibly 1950 and 51

RUNS CREATED/GAME YEAR DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE
1 Reds 1951 -1.32 3.69 5.00
2 Reds 2009 -.92 4.11 5.04
3 Reds 1950 -.89 4.41 5.30
4 Reds 1982 -.80 3.62 4.42
5 Reds 2003 -.70 4.45 5.15

EQA
.235 1951 (worst in baseball)
.243 2009 (tied for worst in baseball)
.247 1982 (23rd in baseball)
.248 1950 (14th out of 16 teams)
.252 2003 (23rd in baseball)

so it looks like the 1951 offense was worse
the 30s and 40s were some really dark years for the Reds it looks like a lot of the 1940s offenses were also worse.

there is no chance of this season being the worst in Reds history mainly because the Reds have such a long history and baseball was so different

but it’s the worst offense since 1951

I don’t know what the lineup was in 1951 but looking at the starters only 2 had an OPS+ over 95. Connie Ryan 2B (97 OPS+) and Johnny Wyrostek OF (105 OPS+)

the same can be said for this season. Phillips 2B (100 OPS+) and Votto 1B (143 OPS+)
Gomes only has 188 PA and might be a regular now but remember, the guy not only didn’t make the roster but never played when he first got called up.

So, not the worst in Reds history but the worst Reds offense in modern baseball

ReplyReply
• Matt Steele

Haha thanks Mike, some of this can obviously be blamed on injuries but still, when we throw WillyT out there every day leading off followed by someone else terrible we’re not going to have a good offense.

ReplyReply
• well at least I laughed tonight
“I trade Taveras for a photo of Ray Olmedo straight up.”

1st try and push harder in this trade…shoot for a photo of Pokey!

later someone mention trying to get the actual player Olmedo (where ever he is) for Taveras. Well, he plays for the TB AAA team. He still doesn’t hit and he’s only 28

hmm…tough choice for me as GM as to which of these Reds I’d want a photo of in trade for Taveras

Olmedo? Castro? Reese? Stillwell? Foley?, Lenny Harris?!?, or Wilton Guerrero?

ReplyReply
• Matt I’m not sure much of it can be blamed on injuries.
Where have injuries hurt this offense?

the loss of Bruce and Votto and EE/Rolen
but every team has injuries. We’d have to go back and look at 1982 and 1951 and see what injuries they had.
but injuries didn’t really hit us in CF and SS our two weakest hitting positions

ReplyReply
• Here’s what I don’t understand: To Dusty Baker, Paul Janish is SO BAD that he can’t see the field. The Reds had the worst SS in baseball, and Janish got all of 25 AB since July 1.

YET TONIGHT, when he has no choice but to play Paul Janish, Dusty bats him second.

One day (season) a guy can’t crack the lineup, the next he’s batting at the top of the order. Another news flash to Dusty: Like Gonzalez, Janish is slow.

Do you put Hanigan in for Tatum and hit Balentien in the #9 spot?

I’d sure take the Cowboy ANYDAY on TV or the radio over George Grande.

Brantley really isn’t that bad to listen to. At least he criticizes the players when they play like bums. Thom Brennamen does that same thing, and I’ve even heard Chris Welsh do it a lot this year. That’s what needs to be heard! Not a bunch of excuses of why someone made a stupid blunder in the field or can’t hit the ball.

Dusty just isn’t doing anything right now that makes sense. Every move is questionable, and his lineups have to be the most IGNORANT in baseball. At this point, you fire a manager. Dusty just can’t coach this team – he doesn’t have the players that can make up for his inconsistencies like he did in Chicago and San Francisco.
