Just saw this quote from Gomes: <i>''This one's a lot more emotional for me,'' said Gomes, who opened the season with Triple-A Louisville after signing a minor-league contract with Cincinnati in January. He joined the Reds on May 22. ''I was in Triple-A to start this thing off, and now - not too many at-bats later - I have three home runs"</i>

Not too many at bats later... a subtle dig at Dusty, or just being honest?

"but his career BA is in the .230’s and he’s prone to long stretches where he produces nothing at the plate."

Put him back in CF and we have our next leadoff man....

I can't imagine a situation where the Reds keep both Nix and Gomes on next year's roster. I like both these guys, but I'm going with Gomes and not just because of last night's heroics. Nix is a much better defender but his career BA is in the .230's and he's prone to long stretches where he produces nothing at the plate. Gomes can hit and this offense stinks (TOS).

When your OBP is lower than a respectable AVG, it's time to take a breather.....or hit at the top of the lineup, whichever you prefer.

Gomes just needs to learn to hit breaking pitches and he would be a BEAST. I really like him.

Let's get Gomes, Dickerson, and Balentien in there every day and see what happens.

I wonder if Adam Dunn was taking notes as he watched Gomes round the bases (ALL 3 TIMES)?

Did Dunn EVER hit 3 dingers in a game?

Good thing Gomes was sent to L'Ville for some seasoning and we started the year with McDonald.

Anyways, I'm glad Johnny is making the most of his time. I do like his bat and fighting skills on the bench, and I hope he is in the mix next year.

(3) David I've noticed that. You can almost always know what kind of game Arroyo is going to have from the 1st inning. His margin for error is small, so if he isn't sharp he gets hammered right away. But if he is sharp or just manages to get thru the first inning by luck, he gets a rhythm going and look out. When he can spot his fastball and his breaking pitches are sharp, he just outsmarts hitters from there, makes them look foolish.
