Titanic Struggle Recap

Time for a recap of tonight’s titanic struggle….

FINAL
Washington 0
Cincinnati 7
WP: Arroyo (11-11)
LP: Balester (1-2)
BOX SCORE

POSITIVES
–TOIA*

–Jonny Gomes! 3-4, three big homers, 5 RBI. One curtain call. Awesome game for the right-handed Adam Dunn. Maybe this guy can hit right-handers after all.

–Bronson Arroyo! Two-hit shutout, 3 Ks, 1 BB, 103 pitches. Outstanding effort.

–Ryan Hanigan appears to be back on the horse again. Two hits tonight, including a solo homer.

–Laynce Nix was 2-4, scored two runs, and made a couple of sterling defensive plays.

NEGATIVES
–N/A

ETC.
–I can’t figure this Arroyo guy out. Who knows when he’s going to be good and when he’s going to be bad?

–Nice to see Gomes and Nix contributing again. Same with Hanigan.

–Don’t look now, but Gomes has a 917 OPS: .271/.351/.566. I’m starting to believe the Reds really need to hang onto him next year.

*This Offense Is Awesome

I dunno guys. I think Darnell McDonald is still a good alternative to Gomes. Maybe a few more months in AAA will help Gomes, ya think?

Haha Gomes just needs to get faster

Anyway I think we need to keep Gomes but not Nix. Glad to see our offense light up against the Nats (who we should be beating)

Good game all around. Five of Arroyo’s last six starts are quality starts. Pretty good. I can’t get my head around it though. It seems like if Arroyo can get through the first inning, he’ll be good.

  • Maybe we should have someone out of the bullpen pitch the 1st inning then bring Arroyo in starting with the 2nd inning. It might take that long for the herbal supplements or whatever voodoo crap Arroyo is taking to kick in.

  • Let’s trade Arroyo straight up to Washington for that Dunn guy they have.

  • Gomes clogs the bases, get him out of here.

I didn’t see the game, but what kind of reaction from the fans did Dunn get during his first AB?

Congrats to Mr. Gomes. Still waiting for the highlights while on vacation. Stupid Michael Vick story.

    (3) David I’ve noticed that. You can almost always know what kind of game Arroyo is going to have from the 1st inning. His margin for error is small, so if he isn’t sharp he gets hammered right away. But if he is sharp or just manages to get thru the first inning by luck, he gets a rhythm going and look out. When he can spot his fastball and his breaking pitches are sharp, he just outsmarts hitters from there, makes them look foolish.

Good thing Gomes was sent to L’Ville for some seasoning and we started the year with McDonald.

Anyways, I’m glad Johnny is making the most of his time. I do like his bat and fighting skills on the bench, and I hope he is in the mix next year.

I wonder if Adam Dunn was taking notes as he watched Gomes round the bases (ALL 3 TIMES)?

Did Dunn EVER hit 3 dingers in a game?

Gomes just needs to learn to hit breaking pitches and he would be a BEAST. I really like him.

Let’s get Gomes, Dickerson, and Balentien in there every day and see what happens.

    AGon OBP now .258. Nice.

  • When your OBP is lower than a respectable AVG, it’s time to take a breather…..or hit at the top of the lineup, whichever you prefer.

I can’t imagine a situation where the Reds keep both Nix and Gomes on next year’s roster. I like both these guys, but I’m going with Gomes and not just because of last night’s heroics. Nix is a much better defender but his career BA is in the .230’s and he’s prone to long stretches where he produces nothing at the plate. Gomes can hit and this offense stinks (TOS).

  • How much will Hernandez start when he gets off the DL?

  • Every frickin’ day, Greg.

Put him back in CF and we have our next leadoff man….

@15: Preach, you’ve encapsulated the Dusty Baker philosophy perfectly.

Just saw this quote from Gomes: ”This one’s a lot more emotional for me,” said Gomes, who opened the season with Triple-A Louisville after signing a minor-league contract with Cincinnati in January. He joined the Reds on May 22. ”I was in Triple-A to start this thing off, and now – not too many at-bats later – I have three home runs”

Not too many at bats later… a subtle dig at Dusty, or just being honest?

Matt – I would say both.
