Game Thread: Reds at San Francisco — 2009.08.09

Aaron Harang vs. Matt Cain. At one time, I would have been fine with that matchup. Now, I’m not sure.

We gonna win today?

it may be a fine matchup if harang has the same stuff as the last outing. looks like Cain has finally put it all together. its quite possible another low-scoring contest like yesterdays game. Maybe Votto breaks out of his slump today and Wladimir stays hot.

    Go (2010) Reds!

Matt B – be nice. :-) For all Weathers faults, always felt like he tried his best, cared about the team and seemed to help the youngs as best he could. he may have been put in spots beyond his abilities at times but never seemed to give an excuse.

Yeah, I know. Weathers wasn’t a bad pitcher, but I don’t think he had much business being on the Reds. My sarcasm in #5, though, is more attributed to being frustrated with the front office than Weathers himself.

    Nice shot by Phillips!

And holy crap, George pronounced Jocketty correctly again!

David Weathers gave this team some good years. I really think he liked Cincinnati. If our young bullpen breaks down next year many here may miss the old guy.

    Is Cain’s glove yellow?!

Too bad no one was on for that shot by BP!

The Weathers move might not be the last. According to MLBtraderumors.com the Dodgers are now looking for another starter. Could we say good bye to Harang or Arroyo soon?

Of course, no one on base for BP’s home run. Usual job of table setting by WT and AG. Taveras still trying to get the ball out of the infield for the first time in the SF series.

This was probably the last time we would ever get anything for weathers. Probably a meaningless trade in the long run, I doubt we got a world beater in return.

Maybe we will get an A level pitcher who can lead us to the world series

    Lineup question:

If I am dusty baker – I would have every starter in the game today. Aaron Harang has to look at this lineup and think “shutout”. We haven’t been able to score runs for him all year, and then we throw out this terrible lineup?

No wonder he only gets ~3 runs a game.

  • Y-City Jim

Well Hanigan did need a day off. Rolen is probably getting a cat scan. Janish is probably Weather’s replacement in the bullpen. I wish the crazy rumor of Janish in LF last game had been true. It would have just summed up DustyLand so perfectly.

I wonder why dusty didn’t give hanigan the game off when Homer was pitching. Getting a win for Harang would be huge (has it been 2 months?).

This lineup is just terrible without Rolen, Bruce, Dickerson, Hanigan.

Maybe it should be Janish. Not because he can’t contribute to the big league club, but so he can actually get some ABs this year. He has 98 plate appearances this entire year. How is that good for any 27 year old player?

I would expect the return for Weathers to be comparable to what we got for Hairston. Both are FAs are the end of the year, so don’t expect anything big coming back. It’s a good move by the club though. Basically get something for nothing.

I would disagree with the statement that Weathers was nothing. He has definitely been an above average pitcher the last 4 years.

    ReplyReply
  • AB I’m not worried about Janish not getting PA. He’s not a prospect and is not in the Reds future cept maybe as a defensive replacement.

    ReplyReply
  • AB

REDS1 – That’s not what I’m saying. I think Weathers has value and is a solid reliever. However, since this season is, in effect, over for us AND he is a free agent at the end of this year, he has little value for this team the remainder of this year. Therefore, you are trading a player with basically no value for this team to a team where he has value and getting something that may have of value in the future in return. Additionally, as Glenn stated, we are also saving money on Weathers salary this year. This isn’t a knock on Weathers…just a good business decision.

    ReplyReply
  • Eddie

As of right now you’re going to have 3 guys to add to the 40-man (With Bray, Volquez & Richar going on the 60-day DL).
I would assume Stubbs would be one guy so then you’ve got 2 spots for…?
Possibilities: Heisey, Dorn, Frazier, Cozart, Kennard, Ondrusek, Valaika, Barker, McDonald

    ReplyReply
  • AB

Absolutely Glenn…the ironic thing is that the money they are saving this year on his contract will make it easier to sign a FA reliever, such as Weathers, for 2010.

    ReplyReply

You bring Harang out for thr 8th?

    ReplyReply
  • AB

Mike – I don’t expect that Janish is the long term solutions at SS, but I KNOW that Gonzalez is not. That’s why it’s frustrating that Gonzalez is taking PT from Janish. The knock on Janish is his offense. Only 98 PAs isn’t going to help improve his offense. Now, if a young SS that may be the long term solution is taking PT from Janish, I’m absolutely fine with that. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

With the trade for Rolen I don’t think Harang and Arroyo are going anywhere. Move Phillips to SS, Frazier at 2B and sign a LF and get rid of Taveras for Stubbs/Heisey and this team could contend (if they stay healthy and get breaks). It’s not like we are in the AL East.

    ReplyReply
  • It’s not that I hate the Rolen trade in a vacuum (thought they clearly overpaid). It’s the timing – why couldn’t they make that deal in the off-season? Hell, EE’s numbers (and value) could only improve.

It’s just not going to happen, and that’s the most discouraging thing. It stinks because this team CANNOT win with a .270 OBP leadoff man. And it stinks more because the team’s management apparently doesn’t recognize, or admit that simple truth.

We’re putting a lot of faith in Stubbs’, Fraizer and Heisey’s minor league numbers. I realize that if Stubbs just showed up for most games he’d put better numbers on the board that Tavaras, but will that be enough to contend. Minor league sucess doesn’t always translate to the bigs.

They played very well in the series and the Giants commentators are saying positive things about the Reds. Bailey going toe to toe with Lincecum was great fun to watch and listen to the catching mitts popped. Harang throwing well today was also nice to see. The reason you trade for Rolen and dump Weathers is (a) Rolen is good, Weathers is so-so, (b) the Reds have plenty of young relief pitchers who can replace Weathers, but EE was not cutting it at 3B.

There’s no telling what trades could or could not have been made. I don’t know, you don’t know. We’ll never know.

My point is that as this roster currently stands, there are no leadoff hitters except W.T. on this team. None of the players you mentioned have ever been leadoff hitters.
Rosales and Nix are struggling to hit over .240. Hannigan hasn’t hit worth a darn in the last couple of weeks and Balentin is driving in some runs these days. I wouldn’t move him out of the fifth spot in the order.

Dusty’s just doing the best he can with the players WJ has given him. WJ signed a box of lemons. This club has huge holes in it. Leadoff hitter is just one of those holes.
