Sutton in left field just shows everything wrong right now. They did not trust him all season, now they play him in a position he has never played. Heck out Mcdonald back on the 40 man and bring him back up rather than that.
Do you think the guy that was just in the Reds commercial talking about how he misses a team like the Big Red Machine and that this is going to be a great team and a great season, wishes they would not show it anymore?
Why didn’t they do this months ago? Geez, the Reds medical staff is the worst. And the way they procrastinate with injuries big and small is a complete disgrace.
Yeah, evidently they wont know if its Tommy John until they actually get in the elbow and check it out. Hope it is not, but I’m not too optimistic about anything with the Reds at this point. Volquez will probably be ready to go right around the time Rolen’s contract is ending.
Looks like some small control problems thus far, but he managed to pick off the one guy he walked. Homer is about the only guy I’m interested in watching pitch from here on out.
Man, Gomes has been good. Kind of wish we had sold high on he and Masset yesterday. I don’t know that we have enough bullpen depth to trade Masset now, or better put, he is not as expendable as he was.
gomes has always had some pop in his bat but for most of his career that was it. He would hit homers and not much else. Maybe he’s turning it around. I never thought of him as that bad of a player
Who is this Janish you speak of?
And probably cause Gonzalez looked like a 8 year old, standing up straight and not getting into fielding position despite the pitch being thrown.
I’ve seen Phillips shake his head in disgust at Edwin about 4 times over the last couple of weeks because of one of Edwin’s throws. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Reds locker room loved this trade, if for no other reason than they don’t have to watch Edwin play D anymore.
Guys, I don’t think Harang or Arroyo or Weathers or Gomes or any of these guys are going to be traded.
Walt thinks this team is good enough to compete next year. Why else trade for Rolen?
With Volquez possibly out for most or all of next year, I don’t see Harang or Arroyo getting dealt. The team you see is the team we’ll see on the field in 2010.
And with all the money tied up in these guys, there will be no flexibility to improve the team in the offseason.
Sorry I’m late guys. I was at the bank. But I am here now and will lead this blog to glory in an old school manner with posts in the clutch and fielding (of questions). Like it used to be.
Stick with me JJ, and you’ll soon be a seasoned vet who knows how to post. We need more like you around here. I’ll talk to management, they listen to veteran leaders like myself.
As if the performance of the team isn’t enough to drive away listeners, we now have to listen to this Scott Rolen smooch fest night after night after night…
Scott Rolen can’t do anything about the fact that Homer Bailey is the same old same old. Perhaps he belongs in the bullpen. It seems like the other teams really hit him hard the second time around the batting order.
#45-I’ve seen the same thing. I know some on here think leadership is overrated but EE did not produce and his body language was awful. He might have cared, but he certainly didn’t act like he cared.
I couldn’t disagree more with your thoughts about EE. Reading body language? That’s a little subjective for me. I’ll stick to what can be objectively analyzed.
#71-It really isn’t objective. It is plain as day and night. I’m not saying it is the end all, be all, by any stretch of the imagination and I’m not saying it has anything to do with the Reds record, I’m just saying I didn’t like it.
Just wanted to let you know that I’m here tonight. We don’t need that silly Veteran Leadership to tell us how to post, what we need to take us to a World Series is Unproven Minor League Pitching.
Just ask the Pittsburgh Pirates, they keep trading their players like Nate McClouth for Unproven Minor League Pitching. Stick with me and you will go far.
I was trying to think of some World Series championships won by teams primarily because of Unproven Minor League Pitching, but I couldn’t find any. But then again, I’m pretty young, so I don’t really know much history or have any meaningful experience.
Just remember, what our player core of Votto, Bruce and Phillips need to be winners is more Unproven Minor League Pitching.
Edwin has posted better OPS’s than Rolen each of the last two years, and he’s entering his prime. Rolen is old and, this year’s fluke notwithstanding, he ain’t gonna get better at the plate.
And frankly, since Edwin’s been healthy, he’s hit better than Rolen, too.
There is very little evidence to suggest that Rolen will be a better hitter going forward.
You would’ve lost the Kearns bet, too. He has hit better than Gary Majewski every year since the trade.
Question for moderators: are comments at this blog denied based on content? I have a friend who just posted here under my email address.
He was trying to be humorous while making a point, just like the new poster “Veteran Leadership” did. My friend posted as “Unproven Minor League Pitching.” His post was an attempt at mild sarcasm.
At first his post showed up as “waiting for moderation” but then it disappeared. So was it not approved, and if so, on what criteria?
Edwin’s offense has declined yearly just like his defense. He’s just not that good. We’ve been told for 4 years that he was going to “bloom soon.” WHEN is “soon?” It obviously wasn’t anytime in the last 4 years.
And I am not sure why ANYONE would want to trade Nick Massett when you have two 40-year old pitchers in the bullpen. Doesn’t make sense to me.
#79: Because he is pitching better than he ever has on any level and I don’t believe he will continue to be this good. Although I’d hope the Reds would have to bowled over now that they’ve traded a two young guys out of the bullpen in the last week.
# 78 Steve. This board is changing. There is veteran leadership here now. We will not tolerate unproven minor league pitchers. Sorry.
Actually I don’t know the answer to your question. When I first posted I saw the same thing “awaiting moderation”, but then shortly thereafter the post showed up. Perhaps the mods here aren’t currently active as they were last night. May take some time. I await the post though, sounds like it could be funny. We veterans leaders enjoy humor… once in a while.
The clowns on TV just said the Reds received at least $6 million in the Rolen deal. That’s a considerably higher figure than I’ve heard anywhere else. Has anyone else seen that quoted elsewhere?
Normally I wouldn’t rely on GG or CW to know anything important, but in this case it sounds like the kind of inside info they may have unique access to. Just wondering if anyone else had seen that.
#81 – The idea though is to have guys that can only get better. Masset obviously has the age factor with him. Keeping two 40-year old relievers over him is just not a smart thing for The Reds, realistically, to do.
I mean I would love to think Masset is valuable, but what do you think they can realistically get for him? I’m cashing in on nothing.
It was stuck in the moderator’s queue until I happened by and saw it. It should be up there now.
Posting from the same IP address with a different user name will cause the first post to go into moderation until approved. After the first post, future posts should go through fine.
If he picks up Hernandez’s option next year, he’s pretty much reached senility.
I can see a better level of competition with Bruce back in right, Dickerson and center, and Volquez back in the rotation. But that doesn’t make this team complete at all. They HAVE to acquire a good backup catcher, a capable hitting SS, and some more pitching. I am sorry, but watching this rotation this year does not leave me optimistic for next year at all.
Please don’t criticize Carlos Fisher for that wild pitch on the intentional walk. That is part of Unproven Minor League Pitching.
And watch that criticism of the team looking like a bunch of minor leaguers. We young players are sacred and the direct path to the world series.
Please understand that the only sensible course is to sustain your unrequited love for all things young. Reject experience of any kind (even past World Series winners).
This team needs at least two, starting quality outfielders, a shortstop and at least two starting pitchers before anyone can use the term “competitive” for anything other than a punch line.
Unproven minor league pitching is an enigma. Always has been, always will be. Veteran leadership, and a dash of havoc will get you where you want to go. Take it from me.
Just like the Reds, Toronto is not a complete team. Having a veteran isn’t going to help them, just like it won’t help the Reds this year. Nonetheless, that doesn’t make Scott Rolen a bad player.
Watching Reds Live…Jim Day’s highlight…ONE PLAY made by Scott Rolen. That’s how bad this team really is right now.
Who’s managerial contracts are up for next year? I am sick of seeing Dusty get out-managed every night. Joe Torre made him look like a child in Los Angeles.
Good point, BigRedMike. I was just going to point out that all the good teams, like the Cardinals, the Dodgers, the Phillies, the Yankees, the Red Sox and the Angels – they all consistently reject experienced players for Unproven Minor League Pitching. It’s a proven recipe for success.
Although I don’t really understand the moves the Cardinals made recently to trade their young prospects for Mark DeRosa and Matt Holliday. That will certainly backfire on them.
And seriously, the Phillies trading away their young pitchers for Cliff Lee. Ridiculous. That’s exactly why their organization will never win the World Series.
The Reds need to mimic the Pirates approach – fetishize youth and Unproven Minor League Pitching. That’s how they won in the late 70’s remember that boyish Willie Stargill?
One simple point to success for the Reds – LOOK AT STATISTICS. It’s really not that hard. Dusty seems to think it is though. I honestly think his toothpick has a better chance at success than the black hole he keeps putting at the top of the lineup.
Hopefully the Reds will get closer to respectability even this year when we get Bruce and Dickerson off the DL. (desperately searching for a silver lining…)
That’s a good point Rob. The one thing I’ve always wondered in watching Dusty Baker is what is it that he is constantly writing down, taking notes? I’ve never once heard him refer to something he remembered because of his note-taking.
Seems like words like these should appear plenty of times in that notebook:
“Willy Taveras loafed in center field.”
“Alex Gonzalez really has no range at short stop.”
“We sure would score more runs if our top two hitters got on basemore”
Listen here UMLP, I’m onto you. Sarcasm is your game eh? Well sarcasm may be a quick fix for fly by night blogs, but not this one buster. We are trying to change the culture here. Let’s keep it about clutchness, havoc and veteran prowess. I need to run back to the bank, so I may not be back for the rest of the evening, but I’ll get reports on the goings on here, rest assured.
Ky Chip – Who else can he send out there? I’m not a big Dusty fan, but he only has the players on his roster available to put in the lineup. There’s not much quality in this club’s personnel right now. That’s not Baker’s fault. The GM signs the players. The manager, managers them. Now Joe Torre or Tony LaRussa might be able to make this club five to ten games better, over the course of a season, than Baker would, but that still wouldn’t get them out of fifth place.
I think the largest share of the blame for this mess lays at WJ’s doorstep. This team was poorly designed from the start. How WJ ever thought this team would be competivie is beyond me.
You have your own bank account VL? Gee, I still use my parents’ account. They say I’m not trustworthy enough for my own. I think they’re wrong though, and as soon as I have some money I may open one of my own.
Will someone whose 21 buy me a beer?
Hey, you guys should all listed to that expert on WLW 700 right now. He just made the great point that “it sure is good we traded for Scott Rolen” since he didn’t have a hit tonight. I agree completely.
Glenn — there’s plenty of fault to go around for the state of the Reds right now. Krivsky and Jocketty should shoulder the major share of the blame for the assembly of players and contracts the Reds have this year.
Dusty has been given lemons. But instead of making lemonade, he’s trying to make orange juice.
This team is in need of a major overhaul, both on the field and in the dugout, for 2010.
Chip, I absolutely agree with you. This team’s a disaster. My point is that of all the folks we jump on about how bad this team really is, Dusty’s actually the least responsible. We often jump on Dusty (and he deserves it sometimes) but he’s only using the players Krivsky, Jocketty and Castelini gave him. Simply put, very few on this roster are major league quality players, at least IMO.
Dickerson, EE, Gonzo, Nix, Gomes, Hernandez, all would be hard pressed to find starting jobs on a winning ML team, and management expects Dusty to win with them. Dickerson, Nix and Gomes could all make a roster as backups but not as starters. I don’t think EE, Gonzo and Hernandez are not going to be in baseball much longer.

Well, at least we have Drew Sutton hitting leadoff.
Can that Veteran Leadership tell Dusty that batting Gonzalez 2nd is stupid?
Don’t you mean prepare for the wins to start Rolen in?
What’s the lineup?
Hanigan C
Phillips 2B
Votto 1B
Rolen 3B
Gomes RF
Nix CF
Balentein LF
Janish SS
Please, Dusty, for the love of God. Now, I realize batting the catcher leadoff is equivalent to the Apocalypse, but please try something.
Of course, this is the actual lineup:
Sutton 7
Gonzalez 6
Votto 3
Phillips 4
Rolen 5
Gomes 9
Nix 8
Hanigan 2
Bailey 1
Sutton 7
Gonzalez 6
Votto 3
Phillips 4
Rolen 5
Gomes 9
Nix 8
Hanigan 2
Bailey 1
Gonzo is a veteran. His performance near the top of the order provides an example for the rest of the order.
Not an example they need to be following, but still….
TOS.
Sutton in LF again? Why do we have Balienten again? And if Willy is hurt, put him on the DL!
Walt Jocketty is going to drive me over the edge.
Gonzalez’s robust .197 BA and impeccable .242 OBP really sets an outstanding example for them young folk.
What in God’s name is Rolen 5th and Phillips 4th. Here’s how I would bat this cast:
Phillips
Hanigan
Votto
Rolen
Gomes
Nix
Sutton
Gonzalez
Bailey
Only thing I am not absolutely comfortable with is Phillips first.
There’s my boy Drew Sutton, looks like the number change and that veteran leadership is already paying off.
Sutton in left field just shows everything wrong right now. They did not trust him all season, now they play him in a position he has never played. Heck out Mcdonald back on the 40 man and bring him back up rather than that.
We might have actually found something that Gonzalez can do well with the bat. We can just have him bunt every time, he’d probably do just as well.
I like Joey Votto.
Get ‘em on, get ‘em over, get ‘em in.
I thought George was going to start crying in joy on that play by Rolen at 3b.
Also, George loves productive outs like Votto’s GB RBI. I think he is more excited by a “productive” out than if Votto would have had a single.
This team is so poorly managed, it blows my mind. Both on-field and up in the front office.
Why can’t I just give up on them and pick another team?
Number change?
I’m listening on the radio. What #s are Sutton and Rolen wearing?
Do you think the guy that was just in the Reds commercial talking about how he misses a team like the Big Red Machine and that this is going to be a great team and a great season, wishes they would not show it anymore?
LOL. That’s funny, Mike. I bet that guy gets razzed by his buddies all the time.
Volquez having surgery.
Why didn’t they do this months ago? Geez, the Reds medical staff is the worst. And the way they procrastinate with injuries big and small is a complete disgrace.
At least he was optimistic early in the season.
Homer looks pretty good so far.
Yeah, evidently they wont know if its Tommy John until they actually get in the elbow and check it out. Hope it is not, but I’m not too optimistic about anything with the Reds at this point. Volquez will probably be ready to go right around the time Rolen’s contract is ending.
SUTTON 15
ROLEN 27
Looks like some small control problems thus far, but he managed to pick off the one guy he walked. Homer is about the only guy I’m interested in watching pitch from here on out.
Rolen is #27, which Sutton used to wear
Sutton is #15, which Hairston used to wear
I kind of agree on medical staff. Why did Danny Richar just have suregery this week. Hasn’t he been out over a month?
going, going, gomes
I loves me some Jonny Gomes!
Man, Gomes has been good. Kind of wish we had sold high on he and Masset yesterday. I don’t know that we have enough bullpen depth to trade Masset now, or better put, he is not as expendable as he was.
Is Gomes this good or is he just having a random good year?
gomes has always had some pop in his bat but for most of his career that was it. He would hit homers and not much else. Maybe he’s turning it around. I never thought of him as that bad of a player
Hard to tell on Gomes. He needs to become more consistent so you can really tell.
He had an excellent year when he was 24, but struggled after that. Has always had power though.
Gomes along with numerous other guys can still get moved. I would not be surprised to see either Harang, Arroyo or CoCo get moved later this year.
Last night was the first game this season that I didn’t even attempt to watch or listen to.
But when I heard about the trades, I thought I’d give them another chance. Here’s hoping that the Reds can achieve respectability.
If Rolen was a free agent, how much would the Reds have paid to sign him?
Questions are dangerous.
Does Janish have that ball?
Questions are dangerous.
That’s why I ask them.
Who is this Janish you speak of?
And probably cause Gonzalez looked like a 8 year old, standing up straight and not getting into fielding position despite the pitch being thrown.
Reds need a little veteran leadership here.
BTW, how does Phillips feel about not being the face of the franchise anymore?
If the Reds tie this game up and then give up 2 homeruns in the 8th inning, I’m gonna call it a season.
Rolen looks good in a Reds uni…I just wish it was 2002.
Yep, season is definitely over. Only 1 more year of having sub-.200 batters leading off and .300+ hitters batting in the bottom of the line up
Guys, I don’t think Harang or Arroyo or Weathers or Gomes or any of these guys are going to be traded.
I think I just made myself sick.
Sorry I’m late guys. I was at the bank. But I am here now and will lead this blog to glory in an old school manner with posts in the clutch and fielding (of questions). Like it used to be.
Edwin hitting 7th and playing 3B for Toronto tonight.
Excellent, we now have veteran leadership on the field and in the game thread. Things are looking better all the time.
How Volquez is out is up in the air. The initial purpose of the surgery is exploratory.
George just said Rolen is a man. Go figure.
Jim Day talking about veteran leadership!
And GG says he’s one of the best people he’s been around, not just as a player, but as a man.
I guess GG is ignoring all the problems he’s had with management at every stop in his career.
Exploratory surgery, but something’s seriously wrong. I’m expecting Tommy John until I hear otherwise.
Stick with me JJ, and you’ll soon be a seasoned vet who knows how to post. We need more like you around here. I’ll talk to management, they listen to veteran leaders like myself.
Peer pressure, GG says, is what’s going to make the Reds play better.
I’m going to throw up. What stupidity.
As if the performance of the team isn’t enough to drive away listeners, we now have to listen to this Scott Rolen smooch fest night after night after night…
I am in total disbelief that George Grande played college baseball.
Poor Gonzo is going to feel ignored. He’s usually the one that Grande and Welsh are in love with.
Homer is killing me.
Grande sounds more like some wiener that washed the jock straps.
Phillips just killed Homer.
So much for Homer turning a corner. I don’t know if Walt Jocketey needed to shorten this team’s window.
Scott Rolen can’t do anything about the fact that Homer Bailey is the same old same old. Perhaps he belongs in the bullpen. It seems like the other teams really hit him hard the second time around the batting order.
#36-I would be shocked if Harang or Arroyo goes. Why would another team want them? They haven’t pitched that great and they have big contracts.
Rolen is so much better DEFENSIVELY. Offensively, I’d bet everything I own on EE being better from now until Rolen plays his last game as a Red.
I really wish we could have included George Grande in the Rolen deal. I absolutely despise him.
#45-I’ve seen the same thing. I know some on here think leadership is overrated but EE did not produce and his body language was awful. He might have cared, but he certainly didn’t act like he cared.
On that, we can agree.
#62-How do you figure? It was a hit-and-run.
To be clear, I agree about Grande.
I couldn’t disagree more with your thoughts about EE. Reading body language? That’s a little subjective for me. I’ll stick to what can be objectively analyzed.
#66-I will take that bet. I heard the same thing about Austin Kearns. He is hitting about a .150 this year.
#71-It really isn’t objective. It is plain as day and night. I’m not saying it is the end all, be all, by any stretch of the imagination and I’m not saying it has anything to do with the Reds record, I’m just saying I didn’t like it.
Hello everyone!
Just wanted to let you know that I’m here tonight. We don’t need that silly Veteran Leadership to tell us how to post, what we need to take us to a World Series is Unproven Minor League Pitching.

Marty aint afraid of no ghosts!
Votto flashing leather! Let’s get some runs.
You’d lose that bet.

Nice play by Votto!
Question for moderators: are comments at this blog denied based on content? I have a friend who just posted here under my email address.

And I am not sure why ANYONE would want to trade Nick Massett when you have two 40-year old pitchers in the bullpen. Doesn’t make sense to me.
Man, if Majewski could have just posted batting averages similar to those posted by hitters who faced him, we might have our own Albert Pujols.
#79: Because he is pitching better than he ever has on any level and I don’t believe he will continue to be this good. Although I’d hope the Reds would have to bowled over now that they’ve traded a two young guys out of the bullpen in the last week.

Blue Jays are paying 5-7 million?

Big difference between getting $4 million and getting $7 million
Steve–
It was stuck in the moderator’s queue until I happened by and saw it. It should be up there now.
Posting from the same IP address with a different user name will cause the first post to go into moderation until approved. After the first post, future posts should go through fine.
True, the $3 million difference will help pay for horrible contract Taveras has next year.
In his Toronto debut, Edwin just singled.
EE just singled up the middle for the Jays.
Chad,
Thanks for the explanation, I know you aren’t required to do that for deleted posts, which I agree with.
I was hopeful with all the new Veteran Leadership here that would be the case.
Oh man! I can see a BIG turn around for EE!! /sarcasm
Nice pitchout, Carlos Fisher.
Sheesh, this team is like a bunch of minor leaguers.
Chad, they pretty much are! LOL
But Jocketty thinks we are ready to compete when we get Bruce, Hernandez, Dickerson, and Volquez back from injuries.
How long is Hernandez out? The Reds are not going to pick up his option for 2010 are they?
This team is a disgrace. But we do have veteran leadership.
Over/Under on Edwin making an error tonight?
If he picks up Hernandez’s option next year, he’s pretty much reached senility.
I can see a better level of competition with Bruce back in right, Dickerson and center, and Volquez back in the rotation. But that doesn’t make this team complete at all. They HAVE to acquire a good backup catcher, a capable hitting SS, and some more pitching. I am sorry, but watching this rotation this year does not leave me optimistic for next year at all.
Knowing Jocketty, they’ll probably extend Hernandez for three years. He’s nice and old. Lots of veteran leadership.
The Reds are just 3 outs from being in last place.
It is interesting, the national media rips on the Pirates for being a bad organization, which they are, but, the Reds are not far behind.
The Reds should look to sign Omar Vizquel for 2010, they are close to contending and that would bring in even more veteran leadership.
Unless I’ve miscalculated, with the loss tonight, the Reds will be tied for last place.
Dickerson should play in CF, but, Taveras will start no matter what next year.
This is as bad as I’ve even seen a Reds team play…hands down. This is 62 Mets stuff we’re watching here.
I honestly feel like I am watching the movie Semi-Pro. But hey…at least the Flint Tropics were winning games during the second half of the season!
Votto just tried to bunt?
Please don’t criticize Carlos Fisher for that wild pitch on the intentional walk. That is part of Unproven Minor League Pitching.

Please understand that the only sensible course is to sustain your unrequited love for all things young. Reject experience of any kind (even past World Series winners).
How did that experience and veteran leadership (even past World Series winners) work out in Toronto?
This team might lose 100 games. I’m serious.
I thought veteran leaders were supposed to be able to hit the ball out of the infield.

Watching Reds Live…Jim Day’s highlight…ONE PLAY made by Scott Rolen. That’s how bad this team really is right now.
How did anyone who receives a paycheck from the Cincinnati Reds ever think that this team would be an improvement over last years squad?
This team WILL lose 100 games.
Haven’t you guys ever heard of strategy? We are going to lose as many games as possible this year so no one can see our dominance coming next year.
Who’s managerial contracts are up for next year? I am sick of seeing Dusty get out-managed every night. Joe Torre made him look like a child in Los Angeles.

Listening to Welsh make excuses for Dusty Baker is sickening. And claiming that Dusty will “dream of new lineups” tonight… pathetic.
We all know what Dusty is trotting out tomorrow and it’s no prettier — or more effective — than what we see every other night.
“Can that Veteran Leadership tell Dusty that batting Gonzalez 2nd is stupid?”
Can that veteran leadership tell ownership that having Gonzalez on the team is stupid.
