    good news on the horizon…

Volquez will be starting a rehab assignment soon if all goes well the next couple of days (or so says ESPN)

I’m betting Latos shuts out the Reds, given his minor league numbers.

This team is impossible…how can a team crumble like this? I tried to cut my cable off because the season is over but they offered it to me at a lower rate so I’m stuck :poke:

really harang? the padres? this was not the reds team i expected this to happen to. i actually thought they hada decent shot this year. best in a long time at least.

    nope. same story.

Do the pitchers not have a plan when they go out there? Are they not warming up? Is the other team’s hitting plan vastly superior? It’s like watching a 1 inning game usually.

Looks like Harang has pitched himself back on the Reds in 2010.

people currently on the reds that i want to be on the reds next year:

    cueto
    volquez
    bailey
    votto
    ede
    bruce
    gomes
    hannigan
    cordero
    masset

that’s 10. there’re a few like carlos fisher that i don’t really have a problem with, but could go either way.

then there’s the group of decent players like harang and phillips that i’m just tired of. sure the big man was good at one point, but after all his bitching and moaning about run support, he sure isn’t producing.

does the whole team get to beat up the dugout tonight?

  • fun stats

Taveras has batted leadoff in 20 games in which he didn’t get on base
The Reds are 5-15 in those games

Hairston has batted 2nd 9 games in which he didn’t get on base
The Reds are 3-6 in those games

The Reds are 30-20 when Taveras bats leadoff and gets on base at least once
Note that means Taveras has batted leadoff and gotten on base 50 games this year

Scutaro for example has gotten on base batting leadoff in 88 games
    Ichiro 86
    Felipe Lopez 75
just to name 3 of the many who’ve hit leadoff and gotten on base more games than Taveras

The team has quit. Harang has quit. No one wants to play for Dusty, and I don’t blame them. He has no accountability for his players.

Nice … these bunch of bums are going to lose 2 of 3 to the Friars! There’s no way I’d keep even 10 guys from the current roster for 2010 after the debacle that has been 2009. The only guys that don’t make me want to pull my hair out are Joey and Hannigan. It’s time to clean house in Cincy.

    and maybe Arroyo does

  • if they trade for Rolen I’ll be pissed

deal Arroyo for a prospect that might be ready next year
The Yanks don’t have many position player prospects but they DO have two catcher prospects
Wish the Yanks had a SS prospect
Wonder if the Brewers, Anaheim, Minnesota, TB, Boston or Houston have a SS prospect. They could all use another starter.

and tons of teams could use relievers. Colorado, White Sox, Houston, Anaheim, Detroit, Philly, Atlanta, Brewers, TB and even a couple more.

I honestly think it’s time for the Reds to think big

we have a 1B who looks like he could be the Reds starting 1B for the next 7-8 years
trade our top prospect, a 1B prospect for a top SS prospect

  • That Reds HOF ballot is ridiculous. Some of those guys didn’t play 4 years for the Reds. Jeff Brantley? Kevin Mitchell? Bret Boone? Nice players, but franchise HOFers?

I know team HOFs are purely a marketing gimmick – and fan balloting double so. But that’s ridiculous.

Unless the radar gun is screwy, Harang was throwing an 86-88 mph fastball in the 1st and a 91-95 mph fastball in the 6th.

Why did Harang sacrifice when he has thrown 101 pitches? And even if he is staying in, why is he sacrificing? Its 5-1.

  • Steve

Why in the world did we not pinch hit for Harang??

He’s pitched six innings. We have EIGHT pitchers in the bullpen. Instead we bunt, which means playing for one run, at best, considering Willy Taveras followed.

We get the lead off runner on, then follow with a bunt out and Taveras. Instead we should have pinch hit for Harang to try to get something going.

    That’s totally idiotic.

    Someone WAKE UP DUSTY BAKER!!!

that was, by far, the worst move by dusty all season …. no wonder these guys have given up

    ReplyReply
  • Steve

You know, it’s not like Harang is throwing a no-hitter. He had thrown 101 pitches after six innings. And it’s not like the score is tied or just one run behind.

Sending Harang up there to hit in the bottom of the sixth, with the Reds struggling to generate any offense, after getting the leadoff runner on base – it’s just unbelievable.

At the most, Harang will pitch one more inning. It’s obviously more important to try to score some runs there than keeping Harang in.

That might have been the DUMBEST thing that Baker has done all year, in a year full of stupid moves.

So totally disgusting. It’s like he’s given up, too. He can’t go soon enough.

Aren’t there other coaches in the dugout who could say “HEY SHOULDN’T WE THINK ABOUT PINCH HITTING HERE?”

I’d have even thought about pinch hitting for Taveras.

  • I love the Reds HOF but I think the balloting has gotten ridiculous

I always have trouble reconciling the amount of time a player plays for the Reds when considering them for all-time things and the HOF

But looking at the ballot, what about
Elmer Smith? Charlie Jones? Mike Donlin? Kal Daniels? John Rielly? Jake Beckley?
Bug Holliday? Frank Fennelly? Babe Herman?

Personally I like Mitchell, he was a monster in his short time with the Reds but if you are including him you HAVE to include Mike Donlin and Bernie Carbo

    and
Frank Dwyer? Tony Mullane? Billy Rhines? John Franco? Jeff Shaw? Dibble?

I see Franco is on this ballot. Good.

and I also see they call it “Modern Player Candidates” which leaves off the players I listed from a long time ago.

I’m voting for Franco on this years ballot (I think, that’s just off the top of my head)

by the way I was going to post this link from a day or so ago which is a GREAT summary of the greatest catchers of all-time.
    http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/7/27/962148/historical-war-review-catchers

    guess who is #1? BENCH!

here is a link with a comparison of the position players on the ballot
    http://www.basement-dwellers.com/2009/07/reds-hall-of-fame-ballot-2010.html
He picks Sabo among the position players.

Dusty Baker manages like he is BRAIN DEAD.

He is totally in love with the “double switch” – oooh.

I can’t remember a single time all year that he has pinch hit for a pitcher for offensive reasons when it wasn’t obvious they should come out of the game.

I can understand letting a pitcher bat when we are ahead, or maybe even tied. But when we are FOUR RUNS BEHIND the top priority is to score runs.

Now Harang is out in the eighth inning. What is Baker doing? It’s almost as if we are shopping Harang for a trade and Baker is trying to prove that the first inning was a fluke and Harang can go the distance.

    If that’s true….argh.

I’ve been saying it since the middle of last year. “this team will never progress until Dusty Baker is gone.” This man lacks logic with great frequency…why the hell is Aaron Harang out there again after throwing 112 pitches? What does this prove? Can’t we preserve him for next year? Or, don’t ruin his arm before someone wants to get him and give the Reds some good players in return!! :worried:

This point has already been made, but bears repeating. We have EIGHT pitchers in the bullpen.

Three of them pitched last night: Masset, Weathers, Herrera

Two others pitched Monday: Rhodes, Cordero

Fatigue is simply not an issue.

  • Chris I would say that innings for a reliever aren’t that important when looking at relievers, like Brantley

That being said, more than 30 Reds have pitched in more games than Brantley since 1959
Including Scott Williamson, Todd Coffey, Kent Mercker, and Jeff Shaw

    ReplyReply
  • Chris Garber

I agree that IP isn’t that vital when you’re comparing relievers. But if you’re trying to figure out who belongs in a HOF, I think a closer’s contributions should be kept in context – they just don’t do all that much.

In any event, Brantley played 3 seasons + 10 games with the Reds. Juan Castro was around twice as long.

Thom is really overstating the difficulties of travelling West to East. He’s acting like these guys fly commercial, with a connection in Dallas.

(That said, I’m STILL screwed up from my flight back from LA on Sunday night).

    ReplyReply
  • I just flew from to Buffalo from San Francisco and back and it’s really not that difficult. I’ve done it 100s of times.

It DOES take all day to fly east because you lose 3 hours but flying West is easy

The only problem I run into is flying East and not getting on East coast time so I end up staying up till 3-4 AM and I’m assuming if you live in East (the Reds) that the reverse is true when coming West. Which means later night games are could be tough. If you are playing a game and it goes past 10 PM and your body thinks 1 AM could be an issue for people that normally go to bed early.

but this is minor, I’ll bet they get good food on the plane and I doubt the young guys go to bed before midnight anyways, cept maybe before those weekend morning games.

    Thom is terrible

I go to school in Washington, so I have to fly a lot between there and Ohio. I hear you guys about what the time difference does to you. Whenever I’m home, I’m usually up until about 3 or 4 in the morning whereas at school, I’m typically out by midnight on weeknights. Since I don’t fly too much, it’s still an adjustment when I do come home, but I think that after a while, MLB players easily get used to it.
