Game Thread: Padres at Reds — 2009.07.27

The Reds finally return home after a winless road trip. The big question of the evening isn’t whether Homer Bailey will bounce back, or whether the offense will score any runs.

To me, the big question is: will anyone show up at Great American Ballpark to watch this mess?

Those of you who are content to watch from home or listen on the radio can discuss the game right here.

mlbtraderumors.com is reporting the arroyo is close to being traded to the yankees. The Reds finally have come to realization that they are “sellers”. It’s about time!

  • I didn’t sleep last night and spent the day on a plane so I’m a little delirious and I saw the Reds lineup I’d like to watch tonight

    Cameron – CF
    Hanigan – C
    Votto – 1B
    EE – 3B
    Dunn – LF
    Phillips – 2B
    Bruce – RF
    Keppinger – SS

How is anyone on this planet able to get a job managing a MLB team — one of only 30 such jobs available in the world, mind you — thinking that it’s a good idea to have the top 2 hitters in your lineup have a .289 OBP and a .249 OBP?

It blows me away how ignorant that is. Willfully ignorant.

  • in other news the Reds put Owings and Dickerson on the DL and called up Sutton and Manuel???

Batting Alex Gonzalez second tonight is the single dumbest lineup move I’ve ever seen. It is just beyond comprehension. Stunning.

Arroyo has been removed as the probable pitcher for the Reds tomorrow night. That’s on the Reds official site. John Fay is insisting that isn’t true, though.

We’d be a better team IMMEDIATELY if we would just recognize a sunk cost and DFA Taveras and Gonzalez and play the young guys.

Did anyone see the Nationals celebrating Kearns’ walkoff — beat the Padres, and they were ecstatic. Maybe they’ve decided they might as well enjoy the ride…? I don’t think I’ve seen that much excitement from the Reds this season, even when we were “in it”.

    @Dan – absolutely.

#6: I think fay reported that arroyo wasn’t listed yesterday either and said it was a mistake. On the other point, I guess Gonzalez has impressed Dusty with his 0-7 performance since coming off the DL. I have never seen a manager consistently put together worse 1-2 hitters than Dusty over his 2 years here.

    Here’s my dream Reds lineup:

(Using only players they actually currently have, mike…)

    CF Stubbs/Heisey/Dickerson (ANYONE!!!)
    C Hanigan
    1B Votto
    LF Gomes
    SS Phillips
    3B Encarnacion
    RF Nix
    2B Sutton

Actually, wait — Bob C. says, “If we can get our pitching to show up and get our hitting to show up at the same time, we’re still possibly contenders.”

Jettison of #1 and #2 is looking good to me, too. Are they still the two worst hitters in MLB? Amazing.

I do think it’s time to play Gomes every day for a little bit

In that case mike, I think Babe Ruth should be playing RF and hitting cleanup. He wasn’t bad. ;-)

  • they aren’t the two worst hitters in MLB anymore

but here are the only hitters this year with 200+ PA with an OPS below .600

    OPS DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE PA
    1 Alex Gonzalez -.216 .541 .758 204
    2 Brian Giles -.210 .548 .758 253
    3 Emmanuel Burriss -.198 .560 .758 220
    4 Nick Punto -.192 .570 .762 256
    5 Dioner Navarro -.183 .579 .762 288
    6 Yuniesky Betancourt -.183 .579 .762 279
    7 Willy Taveras -.168 .589 .758 360

two of the worst 10 for sure

    oh, right Bailey and Votto

  • Dan, that is your Reds dream lineup?! I would go with

    3B Pete Rose
    SS Barry Larkin
    C Johnny Bench
    1B Tony Perez
    2B Joe Morgan
    CF Eric Davis
RF Ken Griffey Sr. or Jr. I suppose
    LF Dave Parker

I didn’t really go before 75 there…I’d have Votto, Kevin Mitchell, George Foster, and maybe Javier Valentin in his pinch hitting prime on the bench!

Just jokin with ya Dan, I saw you said with current players, but I was depressed when I saw a dream lineup included Nix, Gomes, Sutton, etc…

    Just for fun…

Here are the career OPS+’s for the Reds starting 8 tonight. (100 is league average.)

    Taveras – 70
    Gonzalez – 78
    Votto – 137
    Phillips – 89
    Encarnacion – 102
    Nix – 73
    Gomes – 107
    Tatum – -64 (that’s negative 64… OK, in only 8 PA’s)

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 Cincinnati Reds!

  • I’m like most baseball fans who can’t stand the Yankees…but I’ll make a few exceptions. Like when Aaron Boone hit that walk off series winning HR against Boston in game 7 a few years back. I remember watching that game with my dad and us talking about how it’d be pretty sweet for Aaron Boone to hit the game winning HR.

I think I’d feel similar with Arroyo. I’m not like in Arroyo’s fan club. But if he goes to the Yankees I’d be rotting for him in the playoffs when he pitches. He’s probably my favorite pitcher to watch. So unconventional.

Being a Reds fan, I am resigned to rooting for indidivual players who I like hoping they are successful when traded!

Homer looked sharp in the first inning. K’d Gonzalez on a great pitch.

  • It’s a terrible lineup, but too give Dusty a little slack, he doesn’t have much to work with. This roster is really bad right now. It’s almost embarrassing. I bet San Diego takes 2 of 3.

Another thought on the Arroyo rumor…Is it me or doesn’t it seem like many of the prospects the Yankees give up are overhyped and don’t amount to much. It seems like teams are mainly making a salary dump, so they don’t try that hard to get the better prospects from the Yanks and the Yanks know that.

Danny Knobler of CBS Sports reports the Reds ARE NOT sellers. http://danny-knobler.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/8590096/16270619?source=rss_blogs_MLB

He notes that any trade involving Arrroyo would have to help the club this year or next. Arroyo is scheduled to pitch tomorrow, but may be scratched. The Reds and Yankees are going back and forth on what portion of the $4 mil left on Arroyo’s deal will be picked up. If the deal has to help the Reds this year or next, I would imagine the Reds are going to take on one of the Yankees’ many outfielders.

The Jays sent scouts to watch the Reds. A Rolen deal is still a possibility according to Ed Price. http://twitter.com/ed_price/status/2873635225

I realize it’s the first inning of the game, but what really, at this point, does Dusty have to lose by getting ejected? That was a borderline call at best, and it didn’t help that the umpire was screaming “Bull ****” at Votto.

Yeah, Votto’s gone on a questionable check-swing strike three call by the 3rd base umpire.

Batting avgs of our lineup: 248, 212, 204 (then Brandon’s 270), 198, 243, 0. Those are some offensive offensive numbers. TOS but Dusty knows how to get the most out of his players.

  • Dan

I will cut Dusty no slack on lineup construction. Even with a healthy roster, he thinks batting Taveras-Gonzalez 1-2 is a good idea. It’s a bad joke.

And since I’m feeling kind of dark tonight for some reason, here’s the Reds lineup now, listed with their career OPS+…

    PLAYER – OPS+
    Taveras – 70
    Gonzalez – 78
    Rosales – 47
    Phillips – 89
    Encarnacion – 102
    Nix – 73
    Gomes – 107
    Tatum – negative-64

    WOW!!!

San Diego right back in it. That is probably enough for Homer.

    ReplyReply
  • Now that was a great play by Taveras! Wow, I didn’t know he had that good of an arm. Thought he had an average arm, but that was an above average throw.

Ya know Taveras has been on some really good teams, Houston and Colorado…He was young then so they probably would settle with his deficiencies because they liked his speed, and they weren’t depending on him to be good like the Reds are. He was just a compliment player.

The problem on the Reds is that he is a little older and not really improving career-wise, and the Reds are also counting him to be very good, and he’s been not very good for much of the season.

I think Rolen is better than Encarnacion. Of course it all depends on Rolen being healthy. I think the whole deal with Encarnacion is waiting on him to get going…but he never really has. Baseball is about consistency, and EE hasn’t shown that in my opinion yet.

Edwin as put up the following line since coming back from the wrist injury: .274 .384 .516 .900. Consistency would be nice, but everyone is streaky, Phillips OPS by month this season are .612, 1.074, .719, and .714. That’s why the larger sample sizes tell the better story. I want no part of Rolen who is owed a lot and primed for the decline of his career. I’ll take my chances with the streaky 26 year old who hasn’t hit his prime yet.

Those were a couple of nice plays by Taveras tonight, especially the throw from the warning track. Tatum played that ball perfect at the plate. I know he would not want to be bowled over at the plate by that huge guy the Padres are playing in left tonight. That dude is a freaking tank.

I know Votto is frustrated and I can’t blame him, but he CAN’T get thrown out. They need him in there every day. Dusty had no chance to save him. That being said, I would love to see Dusty show a little anger and get thrown out for once.
