Justin Lehr allowed 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings pitched to record the win. Lehr struck out 4 and is now 12-3 on the season with a 3.33 earned run average.
Double – A
Carolina did not play yesterday.

I just posted this in the Titanic Recap, but it is more fitting to this post:
I like the options on your poll question, but I’m not sure how you can leave off Justin Lehr. He leads the IL in wins and has been the stopper for the Bats who now have a 9 game lead in the IL West. After the Bats played 29 inning the last two days, Lehr pitched 8 innings of one run ball last night for the win and a much needed rest for the bullpen. Lehr is 8-1 since rejoining the Bats this season.
Stubbs also added a SB to his league leading total.
I am glad to see Valaika swinging the bat well again. He has been solid for a couple of weeks now.
He’s also 31…on a team with young pitching in the minors.
Maloney would have received my vote. Baseball Prospectus had this to say about the Reds second half opportunities, and specifically about Drew Stubbs:
“Cincinnati Reds: Losing Jay Bruce to a broken wrist, at least until late August, cinched it—playing in a bandbox, the next-to-worst offense in the league won’t overpower teams, not even with Edwin Encarnacion and Joey Votto back. So deal with it and give a good rotation something to work with by calling up Drew Stubbs (hitting well enough in Louisville that it translates to .253/.347/.349 with 26 steals) to provide Gold Glove-caliber defense in center and that dose of OBP and speed that Willy Taveras hasn’t. And take offers on Ramon Hernandez in case anybody wants a playoff-tested veteran backstop, because he’s not doing the Reds much good.”
That’s a 696 translated OPS for Stubbs to this point (using this year’s AAA numbers translated to the majors). We’ve said all year he’s the same as Taveras. Stubbs is 24, and I don’t know how much more he’ll develop at this point. I wish his power would return to some extend and that would seal the deal for me to get him here. In the meantime, he’s Taveras for a whole lot less money, but if there’s a chance he could get some power back, I’d like to see him re-develop that skill.
Oh…yeah, Hernandez went on the DL after this was written; day late and dollar short on that deal…that will cost us millions for not much less production than we were already getting…
He’s also 31…on a team with young pitching in the minors.
Yeah, I know he’s not the future, I just think he deserves some props. Plus, he’s the one who taught Homer the split-finger.
And, people were saying the same thing about Hanigan last year as a 28 yr old catcher.
2011 Opening Day Lineup?

5. Edwin Encarnacion 3b

7. Chris Valaika 2b

Was that Valaika’s first professional start at 2nd base? I noticed in the boxscore the other night that he slid over to 2b in extra innings when Griffin had to pitch an inning, but I’ve never noticed him playing a full game at 2B before.
Valaika has played 14 games at 2b this year, the first year he has played 2b. He has played 351 games at shortstop
