I thought the idea with Bruce was to get him some rest, but, uh, not for the rest of the season!

Why in the world was he playing against arguably the best lefty in baseball then last night?

Somebody please enlighten me here because I know Duncety won’t. Seriously, now Taveras will be playing even more!

My frustration with him is growing by the minute, and despite what Mr. Redlegs insists, this team is only 4.5 back in SPITE of their manager. His lineups simply defy logic.

Look. WE, THE FANS, pay his freakin’ salary, so why can’t he explain why he makes the decisions he makes?!

Actually, it’s not his fault as much as the sportswriters who don’t have the guts to press him on the questions that we’re ALL asking! Shoot, even Marty acts like he’s afraid of Baker.

I’m hoping for a big game from Aaron Harang today. The team could be reeling from losing Jay Bruce, they need some veteran leadership to step up.

I hope the viewpoint that Bruce’s injury will be helpful to the Reds gains no currency here. Not only was Jay Bruce being helpful to the Reds right now, but this injury may also set back his development as a player by a half year or more.

He helps the Reds now through his defense and power. He is leading the team with 18 home runs and is third with 41 RBI. Yes, his batting average is terrible, but the only fix for that is playing.

Jay Bruce is a phenomenal talent. Every player struggles at some point in their development. He is 22 – 22 – years old. If the Reds are going to move up to the next level with this bunch of young players, Jay Bruce has to be a part of that. And this injury puts off the time when he reaches that level by months, or maybe a year.

Here’s hoping the medical news on him is positive today.

Meanwhile, the Reds are stuck with Willy Taveras playing CF every day. Chris Dickerson will play RF all the time now, and while he’s better than Taveras, and would make a fantastic CF replacement for Taveras, his power numbers are much too low for a RF.

And, causing another sense of impending dread, Alex Gonzalez will soon return and become a fixture at SS with his limited range, terrible plate discipline and pathetic OBP (.256).

We have to cheer for the good and suffer through the bad, and just hope that WJ has a clear vision of the direction for the team.

At least Homer Bailey is seemingly starting to fulfill his potential. Don’t underestimate the positive effect that can have on the Reds long-term.

    Go Reds!

  • I wonder what the common man’s lineup would be today. I envision myself as a common man. A guy who loves baseball and follows it fairly closely. If my buddies and I were managing the Reds I think we’d get together and say, “how can we jump start this offense? It’s been stagnant of late! Jesse (my bench coach), what do you think we should do?”

“Well, we gotta drop Taveras in the order. He’s not hitting in the leadoff spot. Let’s take some pressure off the guy and bat him eighth. In fact, ya know what Jer, it’s the last game before the All Star Break…let’s just give him the day off and let him clear his head for the next 5 days.”

“Good advice Jesse…ya know Ramon Hernandez has done a fair job for us this year. Had some big hits. But man, Ryan Hannigan has been great….420 OBP? I think we’ll give Hernandez the day off so he has a nice long break and is ready and rested to come back and start behind the plate Thursday against the Brewers.”

“And I’ve been kind of wanting to try Hannigan in the 2 hole. Ya know Jesse, Dickerson strikes out too much, but he really works the pitcher many at-bats and has a good OBP this year. So let’s have Dickerson and Hannigan be in the one and two holes today.”

“Jer now you are thinking! What we’ve tried has not really worked at all. Dickerson and Hannigan have some of the highest OBP’s on our team. If we can get some more runners on in front of Votto we could pull out some of these close games we’ve been losing!”

    The Common Man’s lineup
    1)Dickerson
    2)Hannigan
    3)Votto
    4)Phillips
    5)Nix
    6)Gomes
    7)Encarnacion
    8)Hairston Jr.

I think I’ve lost my mind writing that out, but was bored! It’ll be interesting to see what the thinking man, Dusty Baker, will come up with today!

@JerBear – sign me up for that lineup.

Maybe Janish instead of Hairston for the middle defense, but I don’t feel too strongly about that.

I know they brought up Rosales for today, but I hope they bring Stubbs up in the second half to play for Taveras. He has a good OBP and, from all reports, will be excellent in CF. His SB percentage is excellent as well. At some point (and this point should have been long ago) a player has to get benched. This is two straight years Baker has started dead weight in CF (and batted them leadoff) for half the year. I hope the news on Bruce is good today and he can come back in late August/September. I’m glad I don’t have access to the talk radio garbage in Cincinnati anymore.

Here’s hoping Harang shows up and gets some run support. These guys are due. Jeesh, I sound like Dusty there.

  • It’s a little surpring how down and negative on Jay Bruce people are. So many people think this is like a blessing in disguise. They’re talking about how he needs to figure out how to hit again. He does need to figure some things out, but goodness gracious the guy just broke his wrist!! I don’t get all the negativity.

I for one wasn’t counting on Jay Bruce to lead the Reds to victory this year. I thought he’d be better then he has, but if the Reds were counting on a 22 year old to be the key to their offense they are foolish.

Bruce has underperformed this year offensively, the play at SS, 3B, and CF has been the real downfall of this team in my opinion.

I’d like to see comething like this for the second half, assuming Bruce can’t come back this season:
1B- Votto every game possible (Hernandez whenever he needs a day off)
2B- Phillips every game possible (Hairston whenever he needs a day off)
SS- Hairston 40%- Janish 40% (and brought in for defensive replacement in other games), Gonzales 20% (or trade for pine tar bats)
    3B- EE- 90%, Hairston 10%
    C- Hernandez- 60%, Hanigan- 40% (maybe closer to 55/45)
LF- Gomes/Nix (depends on LHP or RHP)
    CF- Stubbs 90%, Dickerson 10%
    RF- Dickerson 75% Hairston 10% Gomes/Nix 10% Taveras 5%
late game defensive replacement for Gomes and pinch runner- Taveras

  • Dusty just called out Dickerson again on the pregame show. No mention of how badly Taveras misplayed that inside-the-parker.

    ReplyReply
  • In some ways the Taveras signing is a good example of the difference in the small market teams and the large market teams.

Could you imagine the Yankees or Red Sox signing Taveras cus they are desperate for speed and a “leadoff” hitter.

I’m not totally excusing the Reds…but I always find it funny how much praise the Yankees GM Brian Cashman gets at times. I think the Red Sox GM, Epstein, has an easy job too, but I also think he is actually a pretty smart guy, and could be successful at a mid-level market or small market as well.

But man what an easy job. Instead of signing a question mark in Taveras, those guys are looking at Torii Hunter type of players when trying to fill a need in the offseason. Not really a level playing field, and still the Yankees couldn’t even make the playoffs last year. Maybe I’m crazy, but sometimes I think Cashman is the worst GM in all of baseball.

That is bad. I have heard three national MLB shows discuss the play, and all them noted how horribly Taveras misplayed that ball.

I have several thoughts on the Bruce situation.

First, I *do* think it’s possible that mentally, taking a break for a while could help him. It could also hurt him, of course. I think it’s impossible to know.

What I do know is that it kills the team, because any replacement for him that Dusty throws out there will be the wrong one.

Second, I think that people here have to realize that it isn’t a sure thing that Jay Bruce will be a great player. He’s got a chance to be, of course, but great minor league numbers at a young age PREDICT success, they do not guarantee it. I think of Austin Kearns as an example. I think it’s likely Bruce will be very good, but I’m not sure, and no one here should be either.

Another example is Andruw Jones. Certainly a very good player, but his numbers in the bigs never approached what I thought they would. Keep in mind that his minor league career was unbelievable, as he put up a 1024 OPS in A, 1107 in AA, and 1204 in AAA, all in the same year as a 19-year old!!

  • Ya know, I kind of agree with Baker on a lot of his points. But then I don’t agree with him in many areas. I can kind of understand his crazy mind at times. I think his line of thinking is just kind of distorted baseball wise with certain things.

He’s right about letting guys develop, and how some guys tear it up in Triple A and stink in the majors. The whole problem with his thinking though is that we are playing guys like Taveras every day who should be in Triple A themselves. I’ve never seen Heisey play in my life, but I bet most scouts and baseball people would tell you the Reds are better with Heisey than Taveras.

I don’t have cable TV, but was at my sister’s house a lot this week, and was able to watch Baseball Tonight…I couldn’t believe how bad it was. Carl Ravich, John Kruk, and Buck Showalter is just brutal. Ravich just doesn’t seem like he should be the host of a show. He’s just uptight or something.

Then you have the weekend guys…Eric Young has this squeaky voice I couldn’t take much longer!
I kind of like Orestes Destrada (?) but then they kind of casually mentioned Jay Bruce breaking his wrist, and Orestes was like “yeah that’s a shame, he just had a couple days off was getting back on track, had some HRs this year…blah blah…it was like they didn’t really care at all about his injury. They cared more about how a no name Mets team is fairing.

The worst though was the Manny Ramirez coverage…I don’t know. Baseball Tonight is brutal. I thought it use to be decent, but it’s just overkill. Maybe it’s like the 24 hour news network. There’s really not enough to talk about for a full hour every night, so it’s just a bunch of junk.

On the contrary, the MLB network guys are a little more tolerable.

In my opinion, it is because the Reds are a smaller market team that makes it more important that they do not sign players like Taveras, let alone give them a two year contract. Taveras has never been any good and the Reds already have plenty of players that can do better at a significantly lower salary.

    Down in the first again.

I will say it. I don’t believe having Bruce out of the lineup will impact this team one way or the other. He has 1 homer in in last 50-plus at bats and is hitting .209 on the year, and even worse lately. They will miss his arm.

I certainly believe if other individuals shouldn’t have been playing every day then neither should he have been.

Taveras had no chance at getting Wright at the plate, but he tried anyway, which allowed Sheffield to go to second. Hopefully, it doesn’t come back to bite the Reds.

    ReplyReply
  • Matt B.

And Taveras’s play probably did cost the Reds a run. Sheffield would have been on first still and given that he’s not the most fleet of foot, he more than likely would not have scored on the double. Taveras continues to hurt this team on offense and defense.

  • BrentM

Willy now responsible for all 4 runs! Yeah, Dusty. Call out Dickerson in the pregame for not backing up Willy T’s horrible routes to flyballs.

    ReplyReply
  • Steve

    Should have walked Sheffield.

Taveras throws another ball over the cut-off man, just like last night, and way up the line so no chance of getting the runner at the plate. I can’t believe anyone ever thought this guy was a good defensive player. ooh he’s fast…

Brantley was saying last night that the Phillies have a full on practice at least once a homestand. They practice hitting cut off men, full infield drill etc. I wonder if the Reds ever do this. Brantley was implying that.

Considering that Dusty went off today about “fundamentals” and how someone once told him you can’t assume a team knows the fundamentals, I wonder what he has done recently to work on that.

Brantley was pointing out that not only are the Phillies the defending World Series champions, but they are a team of veterans. Yet they still practice their fundamentals all the time.

The Reds need this practice, for example, Taveras’ practice of missing the cutoff with his weak, off line throws. We are a young team. More practice = good.

Harang’s first 10 starts 3.36 ERA, Harang’s last eight starts (not counting today) 4.63. He has not been much better than Arroyo over his last 10 starts.

I personally thought it was bad for Votto to get thrown out. He and Phillips are the two guys on this team that CAN’T get thrown out. They can’t afford not to have him. With that being said, Dusty was about 10 seconds late getting out there. Was he getting another toothpick?

That strike three call on EE was AWFUL. Totally changed the inning. Weathers two home runs didn’t help the comeback bid. The home plate umpire has been brutal today.

Francouer already has two seasons of 100 or more RBI and he is only 25 years old. He is one of only five active players with 100 or more RBI before they turn 24. Why is this a horrible trade? Yes he has struggled, but he is still young. I hear all the time on here how EE is still young and will produce, it seems to me that Francouer has already proven he can do it and has the potential to turn it around.

Ryan Hanigan has really been quite amazing. The guy never gets to play, yet when he gets the rare opportunity he hits the ball HARD. The hardest thing to do in sports is to hit a baseball and harder yet is to hit a baseball coming off the bench, yet he consistently gets on base after going three or four days without playing. I am not anti-Hernandez, but Hanigan has to play more.

I was watching the Pirates game last night while on vacation at my in-laws… even the Pirates’ announcers were talking about how bad Willy Taveras played the ball in Philadelphia that Utley turned into an inside the park dinger. Of course, the Pirates also blew a 7-3 lead in the ninth last night, so they’ve got their own special kind of misery.
