Game Thread: Reds at Philadelphia — 2009.07.06

The Reds take to the road for the remainder of the season’s first half, and tonight will be game one in Philadelphia. The defending world champs will send Cole Hamels to the mound; Hamels hasn’t pitched particularly well recently, but he always seems to toss a gem against our beloved Redlegs.

For the Reds will be Johnny Cueto, who will attempt to show Phillies manager Charlie Manuel that Cueto was deserving of a spot on the NL All-Star squad. Manuel is the manager of the NL team in next week’s All-Star Game, and of course, Cueto was not selected for his first ASG.

I would’ve loved to see Cueto pitching in the game, just as I enjoyed Edinson Volquez’s first selection last year. I’m hopeful, however, that both of those guys will be wearing Cincinnati uniforms in many All-Star games to come.

Discuss the game here….

Y-City, I think the answer to your question is obvious: whichever one was playing poorer at that moment in time cause Dusty ain’t no front runner.

Cueto, don’t you know, TOS? Maybe he wants to show how exciting he could have made the All Star game.

does anyone know how to find team runs scored per inning?

i feel like the reds must be losing the first inning by 200 runs at this point.

our top of the order is abysmal, and our starters seem to cough up runs like it’s going out of style in the first.

    ReplyReply
  • jdarts84

To bad him and Votto are the only ones that actually hit.

    ReplyReply
  • David

Jimmy that presumes the Phillies are done scoring.

    ReplyReply
  • Wow, 10 runs in the first inning! That is beyond bad.

Plus, the Cubs bring back Ramirez and a couple other guys.

My head and even my heart is starting to tell me our season is over. There’s just not enough on this team to overcome the Brewers, Cards, and Cubs. Those aren’t great teams, but they are better on paper then us, and it’s starting to show a bit more on the field too.

They need something out of the realm to happen like Jay Bruce to start hitting like everyone has projected him to hit, or for a trade for an infielder who just comes over to the Reds and is great.

Pretty soon, I’m afraid it’ll be teams looking at the Reds and wondering who could benefit their team.

Right now, I would say Arthur Rhodes could be very valuable for a contender.

The only good thing that would come out of a Reds collapse is that we will see all the youngsters that will be playing in the future anyway such as Frazier, Heisey, and others.

Brantley sounds like he’s campaigning to be the pitching coach. He keeps saying that the Reds pitchers aren’t getting any better this year – they are getting worse. “No way that a pitcher like Cueto should have four bad starts in a row.” He didn’t mention the coaching, but I wonder what other conclusion could be drawn?

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy

Dang you David for piercing my bubble. Maybe 1 down, 99 to go would have been more accurate.

gomes doesn’t even have very bad splits right now. he does seem to be out hitting just about everyone in the outfield.

    ReplyReply
  • Southern Fried Red

Steve, The hitting coach and mark berry should be looked at.

    ReplyReply
  • Brantley needs to chill. The pitching will be fine (except for Arroyo possibly). I didn’t use to be the biggest Dick Pole fan but he has won me over. Offense is still the biggest concern and I’m convinced that Ted Williams would suck if Brook Jacoby was his hitting coach.

    ReplyReply
  • Mark Berry should go. Mistakes happen but he makes too many.

    ReplyReply
  • I heard Brantley too. I can’t say I’m asking for Dick Pole’s head (on a pole, of course), but I don’t understand why he didn’t head to the mound before 4 runs were in.

Are we witnessing the beginning of the end of the d.r. herrera experiment? not to be too pessimistic, but i’ve always felt like this kid was pitching on borrowed time.

    ReplyReply
  • Actually, when Brantley is talking about pitching, it’s almost the only time I feel like he knows what he’s talking about.

They did a little feature with him about Homer’s splitter last week that was quite informative. Of course, he should know a little about that subject.

    ReplyReply
  • Cueto’s ERA tonight jumped from 2.69 to 3.45. Anyone still think he should be an All-Star?

    ReplyReply
  • I agree, Chad. When Brantley is talking technical stuff, he’s quite good. He just tends to get bogged down in Marty’s negativity, and just spouts cliches when hitting is the subject.

Umm…I think the game 4 games ago where Poo-jols hit the GS was the game where the wheels fell off.

This game is the one where the car is skidding on its frame and sparks are flying since it has no wheels.

Maybe they’ll prioritize signing a RH outfield bat with some pop this offseason…ha.

Now they are debating the mercy rule. How bad is that?

    ReplyReply

Now Welch is talking about the mercy rule and running “Transformers” on the scoreboard.

since they haven’t put anyone on the dl for real injuries, i’d say… no, they’re not going to dl the starter with the lowest era on the team.

but seriously, what does it take to get management to shake this team up? whatever they’re doing now clearly isn’t working, and it isn’t working in a BIG way.

someone needs to get sent down, or loose a job, or something.

  • Mark in CC

Seriously, Cueto didn’t look like he could get loose and when he was on the bench afterward he was tugging at and stretching his shoulder. Hopefully he didn’t strain something when he pitched 5 innings compensating for a tweaked back in last start that flared up tonight.

Hopefully it just was just one of those nights.

  • Reds1

I hope you are right Mark. But the way things have been going I wouldn’t at all be shocked, tomorrow, that we find out it is something that will put him out a couple of starts (which ofcourse will turn out to be 4).

A couple of weeks into this season the pitching looked so good and we had some people really performing. I thought for sure that this would be an 83 win season. But now I don’t see how we do that.

Submitted for group discussion: What do you think the over/under for wins will be??

    I will say 78.

I just hope they have the sense to take him out before he gets a more serious injury. I’d rather have him out a while for now than for an entire year for a worse injury. These things don’t just happen all the sudden. Besides at this point Maloney and Bailey are better than Cueto and Arroyo…and then there’s Manuel in the pen

i just hope that everyone is getting this crap out of their systems tonight. fortunately in baseball, run differential doesn’t count for anything, so we can only lose this game once. might as well let them score 200 runs, it’s the same at this point.

cueto is the obvious story, but not one pitcher has come in and gotten guys out.

    ReplyReply
  • that ‘catch’ was the answer to the following question: Can this thing get any worse?

    ReplyReply

this has to be one of the worst beatings the reds have ever recieved. r.cast loves the history of the team, maybe the fact that his team is taking semi-historic beat downs on a near nightly basis will kick something into gear.

This Fisher fella seems to be getting guys out. He can go 3 or 4 innings, right?

    ReplyReply
  • GregD

Baker’s telling his guys: “It’s just like football. Score a quick TD, we’ll recover the onside kick, and go for the 2-pt conversion after the 2nd touchdown.”

  • GregD

I’d love to see platoons gone on a regular basis for the rest of July and see what happens (not batting order, just outlining the starting 8)

    1 – pitcher
    2 – Hanigan
    3 – Votto
    4 – Phillips
    5 – Encarnacion
    6 – Hairston
    7 – Gomes
    8 – Dickerson
    9 – Bruce

Obviously not 10 or 16 runs a night, but if the pitching can return to form, I think that is the best 8 the Reds can offer right now.

    Lineup, IMO

    Dickerson
    Hanigan
    Votto
    Gomes
    Phillips
    Encarnacion
    Bruce
    Hairston
    pitcher

i’d say that’s about right, though i don’t really mind the platoon of gomes and nix. right now gomes is going alright, but historically, he’s had pretty bad splits. but yeah, that’s pretty close.
