Rookie League
Not a great start for the Rookie League Reds. SS Cristobal Rodriguez, a free agent signing back in ‘07, went 3-4 to lead the Reds in hits. LF Theodis Bowe, a 21st round pick in the ‘08 draft, went 2-4 with a double. SS Billy Hamilton, the Reds 2nd round pick in this past draft, also went 2-4,

I was at the MWL all star game last night in not so lovely Clinton Iowa. Coddington and Fairel were fairly unimpressive compared to the other talent on display. I wouldn’t bet the ranch on those two saving the franchise. There were 32 roster spots for each team, it was a nonstop merry go round of pitching changes.
My camera died, otherwise I would’ve had pictures.
What’s the scoop on Heisey? I don’t remember him ever projecting as an everyday big leaguer before this season.
Another thing, a lot of baseball publications ranked our farm system as kind of middle of the road now that Cueto, Votto, and Bruce have arrived. But unless I am underestimating their actual big league prospects, our system actually seems to be pretty loaded right now.
I think of guys like Alonso, Bailey, Stubbs, Frazier, and Soto and it seems like we have a bunch of full time MLB players in the system. And then we have a whole lot more “might be” guys like Valaika, Francisco, and Heisey. And then after reading BBA’s article on Travis Wood and Zach Stewart, I start feeling like the Reds had a pretty rosy future if they can overcome the Dusty factor.
The Stubbs OBP is particular impressive, and if he was playing in Cincinnati with Dusty he would bat lead-off since he is a CF. He’s Dusty’s chance to look like a genius.
Also nice to see Maloney rebound from his first MLB stint. He’ll be back at some point.
Travis Wood is a stud. Hard to believe that by simply replacing his slider with a cutter his ERA has dropped from over 7 to under 1.50.
He also credits finding his control. Just 7 walks in his last 7 games after issuing 27 walks in his first 8 starts.
