Down on the Farm

Triple – A

Louisville 11 – Gwinnett 5

This makes 5 consecutive starts in which Homer Bailey has allowed 1 run or fewer. In this game, Bailey allowed 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8 over 7 innings pitched. Homer is now 8-5 with a 2.71 ERA in Louisville.  In 89.2 innings pitched, he has recorded 82 strikeouts compared to just 27 walks. In his last 5 starts, Bailey has pitched 38.1 innings, recording 38 strikeouts compared to only 7 bases on balls. Over that time, he has allowed just 2 earned runs and is allowing less than 1 base runner per inning.

Offensively, the Reds pounded 5 home runs in this contest.  Everyone’s favorite Red, Darnell McDonald, homered twice in a 3-5 game.  McDonald scored 3 times and drove in 2 rbis.  Kevin Barker went 2-2 and homered, his 12th of the season.  Luis Boliver went 1-2 with a homerun and 2 runs batted in. Finally, Edwin Encarnacion went 1-3 with a homerun, walk, 2 strikeouts, and 3 runs batted in.

Double – A

Jacksonville 10 – Carolina 2

Carson Kainer went 2-3 with a homerun and 2 rbis to supply all of the offense for the Mudcats in this loss.

While Jerry Gil may have looked impressive in the game Chad and I attended Friday Night, he pitched terrible in this game.  Gil allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk in 1 inning of work.  He did strikeout 2 in that inning, for what it is worth.

Class A Advanced

Sarasota 5 – Palm Beach 0

Making only his 2nd start after returning from the disabled list, Redleg Nation Spotlight Player Matt Klinker pitched 6 scoreless innings, scattering 6 hits while walking no one.  He struck out 9!  In those 2 starts, Matt has  pitched 11.2 scoreless innings, allowing 10 hits, no walks, and recording 16 strikeouts.  Both outings resulted in wins.  Keep up the good work Matt!

Justin Reed, Denis Phipps, and Devin Mesoraco each went 2-4 in the win for the Reds.  Reed drove in 2 rbis, Phipps scored a run, while Mesoraco had 2 singles.  Phipps and Reed each recorded a stolen base in the game.

Single – A

Dayton had the day off.

*It is also worth noting that both the Billings Mustangs and the Gulf Coast League Reds kick off their season today, Tuesday, June 23.

  • Nice debut at AA for Kainer.

With my luck, Matt will get promoted on Friday, since we’re leaving for Sarasota on Saturday and he’s due to pitch Saturday night. For his sake, I hope so.

    Congrats Matt!

It appears there are a handful of new faces on the Carolina roster. Was there a bulk of promotions over the weekend?

Bats’ manager Rick Sweet said EE’s wrist is completely healed. He just needs a couple of days to get his timing back and he will be good to go.
    Good news!

  • Good to know 3B will be manned by Edwin Encarnacion once again. Be forgiving of the errors, folks. At least, we’ll have some offense over there again.

Is this the best streak Homer Bailey has ever put together at the AAA level?

I would say so. He’s been lights out. Our buddy, D-Mac, has been awfully good as well.

The performances of DMac and Rosales at AAA vs. the MLs show that this is indeed the biggest jump. But I don’t think we’ll be hearing shouts for DMac to return any time soon.
