Game Thread: ChiSox at Reds — 2009.06.21

Reds and White Sox. Aaron Harang and Mark Buehrle. The rubber match of a three-game series.

This has the makings of a good ol’ good one, as the man says. Discuss it here.

1-0 White Sox, already. That was quick. Still nobody out.

Guess Harang is trying to spot the Sox a five-run lead, so that the Reds can make the comeback today.

Okay, I’ll say it: Dickerson would have caught that.

Taveras got a terrible jump on that ball; that was my thought exactly, renbutler.

After being at the game last night and reading this post this morning I went to the dvr to see how it could be possible for anyone not to see and hear just how loud and appreciative the crowd was for the festivies. I must say FSN drowned out the applause w/ the music and announcers, bc it was very loud in the park and im usually the first one in line to bash the reaction from the fans at the GaBP.

  • …btw, im now 0-6 on the year in 2 different cities w/ 5 different starting pitchers, ugh.

Welsh talking about what some DC meteorologist said in regards to this being a cool, wet summer for the eastern US. That sure is in contradiction to the forecast for my area, which is high 80’s and 0% chance of rain this week. Our big weekend storm was nothing more than a nice shower.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being absolutely horrid and 10 being absolutely incredible, where would each of you rate Willy Taveras, who is 0 for 2 with 2 Ks today?

    :p

    IMPORTANT UPDATE to Taveras poll:

He is now 0 for 3.

Is this a record for least amount of posts in a game thread? I am sure Father’s Day played a large part in it, but it appears that apathy has set in.

The less Dusty plays Dickerson, the better he hits. The guy is up to .271 now.

I think they need to get Gomes some reps at first as Hernandez has been slumping for a month too.

I suppose I still should be disappointed a bit as it seems that the Reds have let a half dozen slip through the fingers in the last month or so, but being 34-34 with Bruce hitting .210, Taveras not hitting bupkus for five weeks, Votto missing over a month, Volquez missing nearly a month and some odd lineup choices is still somewhat promising. Hopefully they can get it together and make a run.

  • Quite honestly, I’m getting a little tired of having to try to figure out who Dusty Baker plays and why, and how long and when.

Hernandez has been in a slump for a couple of years. That’s why the Reds only had to give up Freel for him.

  • if there is a bright spot in the last month for the Reds it’s going absolutely unnoticed

    .328/.415/.402

    115 OPS+

6th highest OPS+ in baseball for a catcher with at least 125 PA

Glad I didn’t waste my time watching the game…so pathetic this team fails to score runs over and over yet Dusty keeps putting the same basic line up in there over and over…I believe this is the definition of insanity :poke:

Thanks for the posts, Jason. Joey V. had another good day in Dayton, driving in the tying run and scoring the winning run. He says he’s ready to play for the Reds, but I suspect the next stop will be Louisville.

I hope Votto never lets us know since it is none of our business. Just come back and enjoy yourself playing some baseball.

Toronto seems like a good place to start. I would expect an enthusiastic reception from our neighbors to the north.

On another note, how pathetic is it that Dewayne Wise drives in a run against us?

I’m convinced now more than ever that Aaron Harang has to throw a shutout to win with this team. I can’t ever remember a pitcher getting less support.

    ReplyReply
  • the Run support is a HUGE issue with Harang

In the HISTORY OF THE REDS only 20 different times has a Reds starter had more than 10 starts, and ERA+ greater than 120 and a losing record

Harang is one of those 20

the last 5 (since most of the 20 happened before 1960)
    W-L ERA+
    5-6 123 Harang (2009)
    7-8 142 Dessens (2002)
    5-8 144 Williamson (2000)
    3-5 132 Charlton (1992)
    4-5 125 Russell (1983)

The worst was Dolf Luque in 1925. He had an ERA+ of 156(!!) and a 16-18 record
That ERA was the lowest in the league! He got MVP votes and had a losing record!

  • Have we given up on the titanic recap?

    ReplyReply
  • Watching Sunday night baseball I made the mistake of turning on the sound.
And I thought of some good news for Reds fans when it comes to Dusty within 3 minutes of listening to Joe Morgan

    at least Morgan isn’t coach!!!!!!!!!!

Morgan is probably one of the few “baseball people” I know that says more insane stuff than Dusty

In half an inning tonight Morgan threw out these two gems

“1 for 5 is always better than 1 for 4 as a hitter”

    and

with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, LAA up and the Dodgers pitching with the lead he says “the Dodgers would gladly trade a run for an out again”. Dude there are 2 outs

So at least Morgan isn’t our manager :)

Good lord guys, just looked to see the game score as I’ve been traveling all day for the CWS. This was depressing.

    ReplyReply
  • Just saw the score also…I’m just wondering if the Reds are going to just tank it now? I sure hope not, but once you go back under .500 I think it may be hard to get back there.

Would like to see Janish get a few more starts at SS. Put Hairston Jr. at third.

I haven’t heard anyone mention it, but I wonder if Dusty deserves a little bit of the blame for Alex Gonzalez injury. He played the guy every day without little rest for awhile there. I thought it was unwise, and think the same with his playing Hairston Jr. everyday. Hairston Jr. is injury prone and Gonzalez was coming off an injury within this season, as well as not playing for like over a year and a half or something like that.

I’ve lost confidence in Dusty’s judgement. I’ve said it before, but I don’t trust his gut or intuition for the game. He can’t control how terrible Taveras has been, but he could drop him to 8th in the order if he’s gonna play him. It isn’t brain surgery to make these moves.

JerBear, I agree with you that DB’s playing AGon every day was an injury waiting to happen.

The lineup this past Thursday against the Braves dismayed me more than any I’d seen all year. Against a RH pitcher, there was Taveras leading off again. But what really surprised me was on a day game after a nite game, our aging SS with the bad knee was playing. I cannot understand why Paul Janish was not playing that day.

Then on Friday Gonzo felt the twinge in his elbow. He’s been overplayed and mismanaged from the start of the season, when he should have been rehabbing.

I know a lot of people here feel this is not much of a loss, and I won’t try to defend Gonzo’s level of play this year. But we are a weaker team without him, and I don’t see a 2009 replacement in sight.

Bringing up Votto for Toronto is a tough decision, even for someone who knows what’s been going on with him, which we don’t. The Reds are falling fast, and could be swept by a good Toronto team.

I believe Toronto is his home town, and he’d get plenty of support from the fans there. But then again, playing in front of the home town fans stresses a lot of players more than playing anywhere else.

WJ is conservative, and I expect him to be conservative on this one. But if Joey plays and feels well in Louisville over the next few days, I definitely want to see him in the lineup against the Indians.
