Game Thread: ChiSox vs. Reds — 2009.06.20

It’s baseball time again in Redleg Nation. Tonight, the Reds open a three game series with the hated Chicago White Sox. Stupid White Sox.

Wait, what? Oh yeah, these are the less-offensive Chicagoans or Chicagoites or Chicagolanders. These are the south-siders, huh?

Well, I want to see the Reds beat them, too. Of course, I’ll actually be watching the Carolina Mudcats tonight; hope to see a good performance by the farmhands (although Yonder Alonso won’t be one of those players, unfortunately).

You guys enjoy the game, and discuss it here.

    From Fay:

“IF/OF Todd Frazier (Carolina) had 2 hits in yesterday’s doubleheader at Tennessee, including his league-leading 26th double…Frazier has now reached base safely in 17 straight games dating back to 5/30 (26-66, .394, 12r, 3hr, 12rbi)…in addition to his 26 doubles, Frazier ranks among Southern League leaders in batting (.328, 1st), hits (80, 3rd) and extra-base hits (32, 2nd).”

I’d sure like to see what he can do to help this offense.

    Dickerson 8
    Hairston 5
    Phillips 4
    Nix 7
    Hernandez 3
    Bruce 9
    Gonzalez 6
    Hanigan 2
    Arroyo 1

Someone remind me why Hairston is batting second, and not Hanigan. At least Taveras isn’t in the lineup. Baby steps, Dusty, baby steps.

  • in contrast to Dusty playing “his guys” despite their wretched performance I noticed this

Alex Rodriguez’s homecoming will have to wait a little longer. Following a tumultuous month at the plate, the slumping third baseman was benched Friday for two games by the New York Yankees for what he and the team called “fatigue.”

So one of the best, if not the best hitter in baseball can even sit a few games. But Gonzo, Willy (finally today), and gang need to play

It’s to the point where Dusty isn’t even doing things by the “baseball guy” book he’s doing things, like what appears to be random. And even said he hasn’t “had time to think about it” even though he’s paid a lot of money to think about these things

  • Dusty is no front runner, in case any of you have forgotten:

“First they want (Laynce) Nix to play instead of Dickerson,” Baker said. “… Now they want Dickerson instead of Taveras. It’s a long season, and you’ve got to go with a guy’s track record as well as what he’s doing now too. Quite honestly, I’m getting a little tired of having to testify to who I play and why, and how long and when.”

    ReplyReply
  • I love the “go with a guy’s track record” part

IF that were the case Willy wouldn’t even be on the team. Neither would Nix
Gonzo has been up and down his whole career….so I guess if you go with his track record you see how he’s hitting and if he’s not you bench him.

Does this imply, or hasn’t Dusty “had time to think about it”, that Dusty thinks Willy has a good track record? Honestly what does that really mean?

  • Im still mulling that very same question over myself, Mike.

  • GregD

Isn’t that the manager’s job? To talk to the media every day? And every day the questions are about the team, who’s in, who’s out and why?

  • Matt B.

It looked like Janish just took the field with the team…

    ReplyReply
  • Matt B.

Yep. Janish is at SS, not Gonzalez. Did Gonzalez get hurt, or did Dusty wise up?

    ReplyReply
  • Matt B.

Grande said that Gonzalez felt a twinge in his elbow during warmups. Hopefully, Janish can shine in his limited action and maybe change Dusty’s mind (though I’m not holding my breath).

  • At the Mudcats game. Logan Parker just grounded out, but Carolina is up 3 in the 1st inning.

Nope, 4-0 now. Eymann with an RBI single.

  • HAVOC from a guy with no “track record”

    ReplyReply
  • why in the 1st inning of the game do you sacrifice a fast runner from 2nd to 3b giving up an out?

    ReplyReply
  • As for Dusty’s “testify” comment. it’s part of your job. If he was managing in NYC, he could have been answering for his stubborn actions much, much sooner than this. As the saying goes, if you can’t take the heat then get out of the kitchen. He can hand in his resignation anytime as far as the fans in Cincinnati are concerned.

  • Good question, Mike. I’ve been wondering that all year.

  • Hey, Dusty! Who was that guy leading off the game with a base hit?

    ReplyReply
  • GregD

I see the question has already been asked, but I will ask again

why in the 1st inning of the game do you sacrifice a fast runner from 2nd to 3b giving up an out?

    ReplyReply
  • Here is I think the other minus to the sacrifice this early in the game
The Reds have had base runner both of the 1st 2 innings.

    Contreras has thrown 14 pitches

    ReplyReply
  • oh the 14 was wrong and not updated…
21, which is still not a lot

  • Matt B.

Dickerson has done more for this team in one game than Taveras has this month.

    ReplyReply
  • CarolinaReds

Dickerson is clearly the better fielder and against righties the better hitter. Dusty completely defies logic by sitting his player.

I pisses me off more that Dusty gets irritated that people question the line up…even announcers from other teams question him, maybe he should look at himself instead of pointing the finger at everyone else as if we’re all wrong :poke: X(

    ReplyReply
  • That was a nice defensive play by Dickerson backing up Nix who took a bad route to the ball

Nice to have someone flying around CF and getting on base

    ReplyReply
  • Carolina I agree and in this case I do think it’s “everyone else”. I haven’t heard or read a single person defending Dusty’s choices.

The closest thing I’ve heard in Dusty’s defense is the crazy praise of Gonzo’s defense. Reds announcers praise him on even routine plays. Sure Gonzo’s defense has gotten a lot better since the 1st month of the season but he’s still not the great defender he use to be.

Could Gonzalez have dove and made the play that CWS SS Ramirez just made on Arroyo? :D

2 outs in 4th…looks like it’s Brons-on so far, lets hope he doesn’t morph into Brons-off later :worried:

    ReplyReply
  • CarolinaReds

Well, I guess he morphed into Brons-off.

I think I might go to the rack track if there’s more than 3 runs since the Reds are incapable of scoring more than 4

Did everyone see that Alonzo broke his hand and Votto went to Dayton?

  • spoke a little too soon Carolina
    2 out walk, HR

Arroyo has been getting the outside calls so far…one pitch was over the white chalk it was so far off the plate and he got a called strike. Inside curve or slide to a lefty, HR

there’s our #7 hitter who is never in the top of the line up…thank goodness he led of this inning, imagine if he led off the 1st inning or 2nd inning instead of the 3rd on a regular basis?

I wonder if a squeeze will be put on here since Arroyo can handle the bat.

He’s gotten a hit in 8 of those 12 games

.415 OBP in those games not including today’s game

  • CarolinaReds

That’s why you have your .300+ hitters at the top of the line up Dusty…it’s really just basic baseball, kind of like you have your best pitcher start the season and your 5th starter is your worst :poke:

  • CarolinaReds

pathetic, just pathetic…Dickerson would have brought him in if he’d have batted with less than 2 outs

    ReplyReply
  • Matt B.

That’s pathetic. You get a triple with no one out, and you don’t score.

    ReplyReply
  • I should add that despite Hanigan getting on base 18 times in the last 12 games (read that, that’s amazing) he has only scored 4 times

    ReplyReply
  • Hanigan should absolutely be batting 2nd

    ReplyReply
  • and the sad part, soon Hanigan will be back on the bench

mike: that’s because he’s batting 7-8 and the pitcher is behind him followed by Willy T.

Dusty Baker either does not want to win or is clueless as to what is going on with this teams stats.

Even Phillips can be more productive when there is someone one base in front of him. I’m sure he hasn’t seen much of that lately.

  • I was curious after team BP hit his 11th HR
Where is he on the all-time Reds HR by a 2B. I didn’t know.

    2nd behind only Morgan

    HOMERUNS HR
    1 Joe Morgan 152
    2 Brandon Phillips 78
    3 Bret Boone 70
    4 Bid McPhee 53
    5 Ron Oester 42

the Reds don’t have the worst offense in baseball this season

Oakland, SF, and Seattle have been worse

  • another strange move by Dusty
double switch, which is a good idea, he put Rosales in at 3B
but instead of taking Hairston out he took Janish out at SS and moved Hairston to SS
the Reds have a lead in the game, wouldn’t you want your better defensive SS in the game?

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

There has to be some bad blood going on between Baker and Janish. Janish probably questioned his line-up decisions.

    ReplyReply
  • Brad

If he takes out Hairston the pitcher’s spot is due up third in the next inning. Taking out Janish lets the whole order get through before the pitcher’s spot comes up again.

  • pinson343

I like this top of the lineup a whole lot better, so does Phillips.

    ReplyReply
  • Imagine. If Willy and Gonzo were at the top of the order instead
It would probably be 2-2 right now

  • it’s really impossible to say if Gonzo-Taveras were at the top of the order but the other thing is what I think was a very good defensive play in the 1st or 2nd inning by Dickerson backing up. Held the runner to a double. Could have easily been a triple if Taveras was in there and didn’t do the same. In other words it could be 3-2 Reds down

Good defensive plays tonight by Dickerson, Phillips and Hairston

    ReplyReply
  • Does Hanigan take bad swings?

just had some nasty pitches out of the strike zone and seemed to comfortably take them all and draw a BB. He only swung at the 1 strike he got

YES !!!!! The back end of the bullpen does it again, with the help of an insurance run on BP’s sac fly.

Coco really grooved that first pitch to Konerko, but in that situation challenging him made more sense than walking him.

I recall remarking to a friend circa 2005 about how weird it felt to MISS Bill Clinton. I never thought I’d miss Bill Clinton, and there I was, nostalgic for a president I probably never would have fully supported during his tenure, despite my liberal leanings.

I hate to say it, but Corey Patterson might be better than Willy Taveras. At least the dude could play a little defense. Do I really miss Corey Patterson?

    God, help us.
