Mike Lincoln may be put out of our misery soon. He has cleared waivers, and (as noted in the game thread) this appears to be a clear precursor to the Reds designating him for assignment.
I expect he’ll be in Louisville soon. No way Lincoln will decline the demotion and become a free agent.
UPDATE: I put this above, but it’s really more appropriate here, I guess. Mike Lincoln has been placed on the disabled list with a bulging ERA. Josh Roenicke has been recalled. Welcome, Josh!
Players are placed on waivers every day. It’s a procedural move. If anyone claimed him they would have to take the contract. Why, when if the Reds release him someone can grab him for free. Either way, this means the Reds have to pay the contract, whether he’s with the big league team, Louisville or somewhere else.
Yep.
If Lincoln is sent down, seems like only position option would be Drew Sutton. Which may not be bad, since he switch hits, can play 3b. His minors number, he seems always to get on base.
Clearing waivers doesn’t necessarily mean Lincoln will be DFA’d. It possibly means he will; it possibly means the Reds wanted to see if anyone else was interested in a deal. It also could mean that a whole bunch of Reds were placed on waivers to find out who may be of interest to other teams, and he was the only one (leaked) that passed through without a claim.
I think the contract was a mistake since relievers can be found for near the major league minimum at almost any time; he is still in the high risk category even after one successful year of pitching following years of injuries.
I would like to his roster spot switched out for a hitter. Wilkin Castillo left the Louisville Bats game early last evening without batting, but a news report from the Bats game said he left early because of left eye irritation.
Steve, he got some dirt in his eye while catching. He was having trouble seeing out of it, so they replaced him. He will be fine.
Drew Sutton has been pretty decent lately. After Stubbs, he and Wes Bankston have led an offensive surge for the Bats. They’ve been playing him all around the infield too.
Say it with me people, SUNK COST. We’ve got 3 relievers in AAA better than this guy in short relief situations. If you need a long man, Maloney’s your guy and it gives you a third lefty in the ‘pen. Let him spot start like Sean Marshall of the Cubs and he’ll give good value to the team.
I agree with the Sultan here, I love the idea of using Maloney out of the ‘pen. Not only does it keep him in the bigs, it allows for some flexibility out of the ‘pen. As for Lincoln, the Reds had to see this coming at the end of last season. Why are the Reds carrying 13 pitchers anyway when they could actually use an extra bat. I’d say Wes Bankston might be a good choice for promotion, although help is desperately needed at third (I didn’t think it was possible to be worse than Edwin Encarnacion defensively, but Jerry Hairston, Jr. is sure doing a good job of it!).
Josh Roenicke has been promoted, according to the Louisville Bats website!
I think the 13 pitchers simply is a reflection of the lack of bats on the 40 man roster. Sutton is about the only hitter left you could really promote, unless they want to go three catchers with Castillo (and if Hernandez is going to be at 1b much longer, that may not be as bad an idea as usual).
If it Roenicke they are bringing up, I hope they use him. The way Rhodes, Hererra and even Weathers have been pitching has kept us in it, but they are racking up a lot of appearances.
Are you guys suggesting using my Bailey idea with Maloney?
It’s not a bad idea….I think it’s better used on Bailey, though, to acclimate him to the big time…but, Maloney’s earned the opportunity, too
Hey, RCR, I wasn’t worried about Castillo…I was more concerned that they had pulled him to sent him to Cincinnati…
It also could mean that a whole bunch of Reds were placed on waivers to find out who may be of interest to other teams, and he was the only one (leaked) that passed through without a claim.
I doubt that, since revocable waivers aren’t available until after July 31. Most likely they placed him on waivers in hopes that someone might be willing to take his contract off the books, or at least part of it. Not surprisingly, no one bit.
However, Lincoln could still be traded any time for the rest of the season, even in August or September if a contender needs an extra arm as an emergency fill-in. The Reds wouldn’t get much for him, but they could maybe dump next year’s payroll commitment.
Steve, I can understand your concern there.
Per Rob Butcher:
RHP Mike Lincoln today went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with a bulging disc in his neck…his roster spot will be filled by RHP Josh Roenicke (#37), who was recalled from Class AAA Louisville.
Per Me:
RHP Mike Lincoln today went on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, with a bulging ERA and inflamed WHIP.
Didn’t Rob Butcher use to be the Minister of Information in Iraq?
Big difference between Homer and Maloney when debating the long man role—age. Maloney is 25, he’s done getting polished up. Homer’s still a little rough.
Lincoln on the DL, interesting, he seemed physically OK the last time he pitched. To be put on the DL, a player has to agree to it, looks like Lincoln agreed to as his best option.
“Didn’t Rob Butcher use to be the Minister of Information in Iraq?”
Yeah, he was the Jack of …….well, you get the point.
Josh Roenicke has been doing a good job at Louisville, but do the Reds really need another reliever?
The only thing I can figure is that they expect Votto back weekend after next or they want Roenicke to get a few innings in the bigs to use him as trade goods.
