Game Thread: Reds at Royals — 2009.06.12

From one of my favorite albums, and one of my favorite artists:

I’m going to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
I’m going to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy little women there
And I’m gonna get me one

I’m gonna be standing on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
I’m gonna be standing on the corner
Twelfth Street and Vine
With my Kansas City baby
And a bottle of Kansas City wine

Well I might take a train
I might take a plane
But if I have to walk
I’m goin’ just the same

I’m going to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
They got some crazy little women there
And I’m gonna get me one

Kansas City, here we come. Discuss the game here….

You are the second person today to reference that song to me (well, not to me but you know what I mean) and I had never heard of it before. Slightly weirded out.

And just for a laugh Indians are playing Cardinals. Announcers were so excited they got Pujols to pop out you would have thought they got out of a bases loaded jam in the 9th.

    Gonzo is batting 2nd…discuss.

    ReplyReply
  • Brian

Gonzo has hit the ball the last few games which is more than you can say about any other Red. So I don’t see anything wrong with it, why not.

    ReplyReply
  • Jason

Yeah, at first I was a little suprised, but his numbers have been solid of late.

    ReplyReply
  • GRF

If what I am looking at is right, no Dickerson against a RHP (even with the DH) and Taveras and Gonzo 1/2 at the top of the lineup?

    ReplyReply
  • GRF

Ok, but even with Gonzo batting second, Taveras at the top of the lineup over Dickerson? Heck, Dh Dickerson if you feel Taveras plays better CF and bat Willie 8th or 9th.

    ReplyReply
  • Kyle

I just really hope Maloney can give the Reds a good outing. Wish I could watch this game, as I’d like to see him pitch.

    ReplyReply
  • Gonzo hasn’t been awful the last few games, true

The Reds offense in the last week HAS been awful

Who HAS hit in the last week?

    OPS
    .902 Bruce
    .883 Gomes
    .831 Gonzo (.381 OBP)
    .774 Dickerson
    .694 Hanigan (.400 OBP)

    who HAS been awful?
    OPS
    .000 Taveras (0 for 16)
    .467 Hernandez
    .477 Hairston
    .558 Phillips
    .561 Nix

scary when you realize that includes 3 games vs Washington

    ReplyReply
  • the last time Taveras got on base was May 27th
    since then he’s 0 for 24
He’s also 3 for his last 39 with no BB for a .179 OPS

slumps don’t get much worse than that

    4 pitches, 3 outs.

    ReplyReply
  • 4 pitch inning. That’s making the pitcher work. Swell.

    ReplyReply
  • Glenn

What did the top of the order learn about this pitcher that no one has ever faced? Not a darn thing. How about taking a few pitches and finding out what the guy throws? What was that a 5 pitch inning?

    ReplyReply
  • I was shocked when I looked at Taveras’s #s today
and then as I usually do I got interested in how they compare to other Reds CFers in history.

Here are the worst individual hitting seasons by a Reds CFer with at least 200 PA

    OPS+ PA Player Year
    48 392 Corey Patterson 2008
    51 333 Bob Usher 1951
    55 218 Willy Taveras 2009
    57 501 Bobby Tolan 1973
    63 358 Cesar Geronimo 1973
    64 375 Taylor Douthit 1932
    67 304 Ryan Freel 2007
    67 217 Wally Westlake 1952
    67 391 Dain Clay 1944
    68 310 Lloyd Merriman 1949

    ReplyReply

Luke Hochevar on pace for a 50 pitch complete game shutout.

    ReplyReply
  • Glenn

That’s what I’m saying Jared. They never let the pitcher get himself in trouble. I don’t know but I’d be surprised if pitchers who start against the Reds don’t have the lowest pitch counts going.

    11 pitches,6 outs.

    ReplyReply
  • Glenn

Jacoby’s got to be scratching his head. What’s it take to get through to these guys?

    ReplyReply
  • BigRedMike

Taveras is a bad player and should have never been signed. Of course he is still batting lead off.

    ReplyReply
  • I know I thought about bolding Patterson. He is one of my least favorite Reds of all time
    Sorry…next time :)

11 pitches for KC – 6 outs for the Reds
that is impressive on many levels

Hard to believe there are 3 teams in the NL with worst OBP
Of course 2 of the 3 teams have higher SLG

    ReplyReply
  • Glenn why do you assume Jocoby is telling these guys the right thing?
Maybe the reason the Reds hit like they do is because of Jacoby

    ReplyReply
  • brublejr

Just dropping in for a minute and I must say this lineup is so freakin’ awful, I can’t stand it! Taveras 1st, Gonzo 2nd basically putting the two worst hitters on the team 1-2…nice

    ReplyReply
  • brublejr

He’s on pace to pitch a complete game with under 60 pitches…

    ReplyReply
  • Been listening to the radio, but just came inside in time to see Willy Taveras hit a very weak grounder to shortstop to end the inning.

I really didn’t expect Dusty to actually hit Willy and Gonzo 1-2. I just didn’t think that even Dusty would be that insane. Bob Boone or Ray Knight, I could see it.

    Dusty surprises me every day.

    ReplyReply
  • pinson343

Gomes batting down where his doubles will leave him stranded.

    ReplyReply
  • Glenn

Mike, I realize its an assumption. I’m basing that opinion by the sight of him walking up and down in the dugout with a po’d look on his face. Everytime there’s a shot of him during the game he doesn’t look look happy. Maybe I’m reading too much into that but I just can’t see how a former big leaguer who had good success at the plate, can think that, when your not good at something…ie hitting, doing the same thing over and over will change the outcome.

Again, maybe I’m wrong but I’m just of the opinion that Jacoby is smarter than that.

    ReplyReply
  • I should warn people what I’m about to write might induce vomiting

    Venable -> Winningham -> D Lewis -> Coleman -> Owens -> Goodwin -> Sanders -> Taylor -> Patterson -> Taveras

Hanigan has been a very pleasant surprise this year. Great kid, good player with good skills.

    ReplyReply
  • He’s up to a 57 pitch pace

and Taveras is 0 for 26 (without a BB)

    ReplyReply

The Reds have to have a CF’dr somewhere that can do better than that. Maybe Dickerson?

    ReplyReply

    or STUBBS!

  • pinson343

Hanigan has been great at throwing runners out going to 3rd. Odd choice by KC, especially with 2 outs and their #3 hitter up.

    ReplyReply
  • Hanigan has quickly become on of my favorite Reds
I believe his OBP is for real and he plays great defense

I think he could be our every day catcher

just like I think a combination of Dickerson/Stubbs/Heinsey could be our every day CF

Essentially you get great defense and not horrible hitting, for free
then spend the money on a LF

  • pinson343

    Mike,

The Reds had a bad OF in 1982 and ‘83, after the entire 1981 OF (Foster, Griffey, Collins) left for NY. Over the hill Cedeno, Householder, etc. Eddie Milner was the best of them.

See what I mean. Did Jacoby look like a happy man? Actually for a second there it looked like he’d been drinking.

    ReplyReply

Is hopper healthy? Even if they do not want to burn an option with Stubbs, could Hopper be much worse at this point. DL Willie and see if he can get it back together on rehab assignment.

Regarding all the stuff about who’s hot/who’s not: I read something recently (if I could remember where, I’d link to it) where a study was done that basically showed that recent, small sample success (a hot streak) is not a predictor of future success (continued hot streak) over any stretch, even a game or two. What that means is that, no matter how hot he is, someone like Gonzalez should NEVER bat second. I mean, I don’t really expect Dusty to think about this kind of thing, but it makes sense if you think about it. Gonzalez (for instance) is NOT a good hitter and though he may have been hot, it’s impossible to guess when he’ll cool off. Thus, it makes more sense to bat him according to his true ability.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

I think he could be our every day catcher

The day Votto returns Hernandez goes back behind the plate every day even if Hanigan is in the running for the Triple Crown.

    ReplyReply
  • pinson no doubt, that 1982 OF was the worst Reds OF in the last 50 years

    1966 is a close second

In the last 50 years the Reds have had 12 seasons with an OF that hit significantly below average. 1982, 83 and 84 are 3 of those seasons

    ReplyReply
  • After four innings, Maloney has thrown 70 pitches. Hochevar has thrown 29.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

and being 10 for 38 with one BB over the past ten games is a pretty tame hot streak.

    ReplyReply

Maloney’s 2 seam fastball has them swinging and missing.

Will the Reds score a run tonite ?

    ReplyReply

    ReplyReply
  • pinson I’m just now realizing what you might be saying by pointing out the horrible Reds OF of the early 80s and it’s relation to my list of Reds OF

see the difference is that while those early 80s OF were HORRIBLE they were as an entire group with almost nobody very good. BUT none of those players hit as bad as the players I listed and not only did the players I list not hit they were FAST

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Can you imagine being the hitting instructor for Dusty Baker? While I think Jacoby leaves something to be desired as a hitting coach, his job is made increasingly difficult by Baker intervening with select hitters.

I don’t blame Jacoby. You can’t make chicken salad out of chicken @$#$#$#.

Hanigan has had a heck of a year behind the plate, but before we annoint him as Johnny Bench he is something like 4-21 with runners in scoring position (came up tonight with a runner at second and nobody out and couldn’t even get the runner to third). I understand we have very little to cheer about offensively so he looks better offensively than he is.

    Agree that Hernandez is tired.

It makes no sense that Dickerson had such a great series against Chicago and has not started sense.

    LF: Willie Wilson??
    CF: Amos Otis

Imagine if Corey Patterson and Willy Taveras had a child.

The Royals have developed some good outfielders – Johnny Damon, Carlos Beltran, Jermaine Dye.

  • Lincoln has done a pretty amazing job at being horrible in many ways
Sure he has a 9.00 ERA which is impressive but some of his other #s are crazy

Left handed hitters are hitting .429/.565/.857 for a 1.422 OPS against

He has a 14.81 ERA at home allowing 3.1 base runners PER INNING

Hitters have a 1.460 OPS against him this month

The 1st batter he faces has hit this shocking line; .385/.556/1.231 for a 1.786

You have Barney’s gun, which only has one bullet. You can do one of the following:

    1. Stop Lincoln from coming into the game from the bullpen
    2. Stop Taveras from leading off an inning
    3. Prevent Dusty from making out a lineup
    4. ___________________

So the question, preach, is which one would you use the bullet on.

  • Crazy numbers for Lincoln.

As for that bullet, if I have to watch much more of this crappy offense, I might have to take that bullet for myself.

This offense is no where near major league quality.

Could we line all three up behind each other and see if the bullet gets them all?

So according to Chris Welch, Lincoln’s issues are due to him not getting enough work?

Good plan Y-city…sort of a Quigley Down Under thing.

Chris should ask Lincoln if he’d accept a trip down to Louisville where he could get all the work he wanted.

  • Ordinarily, wouldn’t you want the top of the lineup at the plate in the ninth?

Not with the Reds. Taveras and Gonzalez are like two automatic outs.

#144-Wang from the Yankees has the higest ERA in MLB history for a player with five or more starts. It is over 20.

    ReplyReply
  • the hard part with looking that up Chris is the “been with the team all season”

There are only 10 pitchers that have pitched at least 10 innings in the major leagues this season with an ERA of 9.00 or worse

Javier Lopez (Bos), Chris Ray (Bal), Anthony Ortega (LAA), Walters (Stl), Oliver Perez (NYM), Duaner Sanchez (SD), Rafeal Perez (Cle), Logan Kensing (Fla/Was), Chien-Ming Wang (NYY) and LINCOLN

We know two of those guys, Kensing and Wang haven’t been with their teams all year. Don’t know about the rest but Perez and Wang are the only ones to face more batters than Lincoln

this team sure has a talent for making middle of the road pitchers look like world beaters.

    ReplyReply
  • That may have been the worst excuse for an offense that we’ve seen all year. Swinging at first pitches, hitting weak grounders. Just absolutely terrible.

The entire team should be embarrassed.

An 80 pitch complete game. Hochevar could have shut us down for at least 12 innings.

That was a pathetic effort from the moment the lineup card was turned in.

  • Cy Houchever, or whatever the heck his name is. Like the manager in Major League says: He’ll be baggin’ groceries in six weeks. But not until the Reds leave town, that’s for certain. Give Lincoln more work. Yeah, great plan.

I thought Taveras could bunt. That was two pitiful attempts tonight. Would someone tell Willie that the ‘Cy of the evening’ is right handed, and he’s not suprising anyone by bunting, so he might as well try the THIRD BASE line?

  • OK since looking at how bad Lincoln has been has taken my mind off of how bad the offense is…here is another connect the dots (like my Reds-speedy-no-hit-OFers list above)

    Tekulve -> Ruskin -> McElory -> X Hernandez -> Service -> Reidling -> Keisler -> Stanton -> Majewski -> Lincoln

  • Hard to believe KC’s offense has been worse than the Reds for the season after watching tonight

OK, I don’t feel as bad after watching how the Mets lost to the Yankees.
