Can anyone explain to me why today’s game is starting at 4:35? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a start time like that. Bizarre, but I’m sure there’s a perfectly logical explanation.
It’s Micah Owings vs. John Lannan, who is actually a decent pitcher. With the state of the Reds offense, that worries me. A win, however, and the Reds will have swept their way on to Kansas City, and that’s what we were all hoping for.
Discuss the game here, whether you are at work or whether you’re home (but don’t discuss the game in the game thread while you are driving home from work; that’s dangerous). But if you have time before or during the game, go check out the great pics Daedalus took at last night’s game.
Ridiculous-looking lineup below the fold:
Hairston Jr. 3B
Taveras CF
Phillips 2B
Gomes LF
Hernandez C
Bruce RF
Gonzalez SS
Rosales 1B
Owings P

First to say the Redlegs are gonna sweep!!
Is this a season low OBP lineup? This is a case where you hope for the pitcher’s turn at the plate. Too bad no one will be on base ahead of him.
.308
.307
.347
.355
.337
.303

There are you OBPs for the starting lineup. Sweet Jebus. When can Joey come back?
I would just like to add as a post-script to last nights game and in response to rebutler’s comment
“The Reds should hire that dork in the stands as the new mascot. Something very endearing about him!”
That dork ladies and gentlemen was me. I am a Reds diehard originally from Boston (my father is from Dayton and I was raised on the Big Red Machine). I am a loyal reader of Redlegs Nation and was in attendance dancing around last night’s 6 hour affair. I wish the Reds would hire me. I stayed at that game last night because I had not witnessed a Reds victory in person since 2002–a span of nearly 25 games. My dancing was out of joy over the fact that my personal curse was broken. Just wanted to let you all know that I’m here in DC fighting the good fight for Reds fans everywhere
Lets Go Redlegs!
Looks to be yet another stunning “watch the paint dry” games. Where’s the yawning emoticon.
Does Willy Taveras even know where 1B is located anymore?
:tired:
If you think this looks bad, don’t even think about posting the starting lineup OPS.
You know what I look at this lineup and can’t help but feel great with our 31-27 record. After all of these years its nice to be able to win ballgames with a AAA lineup, but with solid pitching. I’m tired of always seeing the Cardinals do it.
Of course minus Pujols
Looks like a lineup from Plant City.
Now I’ve got it: “Front runners” are those guys clogging up the bases. Well, Dusty’s got that under control today. I think we’ll win, but mostly because it’s the Natinals we’re playing and Owings will hit three solo shot home runs.
im at the game today…seems to be many more Reds fans here than Nat fans…very nice!
has the game started?
reds playing sloppy so far…
Yeah reds got two hits in the top of the 1st, no runs
Alright, Gameday is working now. Thanks for the updates.
Wait a second, Dunn walked? On a full count?? He has to lead the league in pitches seen every year.
a real slugfest so far…
Thanks, RCR.
:tired:
The official trademark of the Cincinnati Reds offense.
How did Gonzales score from 2B on a single to 3B? I sure there are details missing from Yahoo’s scoring summary.
the nationals are even worse in person…the ball girl even had a ball go through the legs.
erro..ball ended up in the stands.
Dunn has seen an amazing 1084 pitches this season
But that does not lead baseball. 6 players have seen more
BUT, Dunn has fewer plate appearances than 5 of the 6
He is 6th in pit/PA at 4.30 and is behind only Werth, Youkilis, Swisher, L Castillo, and Hermida
the Reds leaders in pit/PA are no surprise. They are our best hitters
P/PA
4.27 Votto
4.19 Hanigan
4.08 Dickerson
4.01 Bruce
3.99 EE
Rosales, Gomes, Gonzo, McDonald and Nix see the fewer # of pitches
That’s no ball girl. That’s their SS.
a lot of walks for owings so far
How bad is this line-up? Only two of the starting line-up have higher OBPs than Austin Kearns, who Washington is trying to get deal off.
So, what’s the score and inning?
Do the Nationals actually have $40 parking? No wonder there are no fans in the stands.
they also have much better pub. trans. than cincy though.
our p/pa that inning was 7/3 = 2.33. Not good.
itis 1-0 reds…and yeah. parking is 40 bucks.
bottom of the third. 1 out, mn on second for the nats.
2 on now, Dunn up…wild pitch…
dunn strikes out…2 down.
Dunn chokes with runners on…shocking I tell you, just shocking.
Dunn’s not having too good a series. Micah already at 59 pitches, the bullpen might have to work 4 innings today.
don’t let me down
I see Kearns is baley over .200, what happen to him, he seemed to have so much potential when he was a red. I saw a game in chicago a number of years back when it was cold and horrible and Kearns had awsome game, then the trade happened and he seemed to never recover.
Gonzo’s our offense tonite !
and here comes the rain…
After 5, we should pray for rain.
When Taveras doesn’t K, he hits a fly ball. Not good.
taveras has really looked poor…not that anyone has looked real good.
Hey, MicahtheRed. Great story!
Just wanted to let you know that I meant “dork” in the nicest possible way. In fact, I’ve been rightly called the same thing many times in my life.
You made it on the MLB Network’s daily wrap-up show!
Just got off work…did I miss anything special? I see Willy Taverison is doing his usual thing…thanks for putting him at #2 Dusty
Weird game for Michah. After 5, only 2 singles and 4 Ks. But 4 BBs and 2 HBP. Effectively wild ?
Mhopp, Gonzo’s been most of our offense, which tells you something. The Nats seem comatose.
It’s amazing that with this lineup we have the opportunity to be a half game out of first with a win today? This is going to be fun a summer.
Dusty must be saving his lights out guy, Masset for the blowout game…bringing Burton in is just a foolish risk
With the two lefties coming up, I thought we’d see Herrera.
burton sucks.
why use burton ever in a close game?
I really want to see Burton turn it around but they should not have gone to him there. It is amazing the amount of base runners the reds have given up today with only one run scored on them.
Burton piching to Johnson made no sense. Just Dusty trying to restore confidence. Who cares if we win ?
MLB’s version of Sam Cassell is in to pitch for the Nats. Did anyone see Taverez’ quote when he signed with the Nats this Spring?
“Why did I sign with the Nationals?” Tavarez said told a group of reporters. “When you go to a club at 4 in the morning, and you’re just waiting, waiting, a 600-pounder looks like J. Lo. And to me this is Jennifer Lopez right here. It’s 4 in the morning. Too much to drink. So, Nationals: Jennifer Lopez to me.”
When was the last time Rosales got a hit that reached the OF ?
Funny Taveras quote about JLo.
pinson I was thinking the same thing watching the game on and off, effectively wild
the washington hitters just aren’t getting good swings on him and i think it’s mostly because nobody, including Owings knows where his pitchers are going to go
he’s only thrown about half his pitches for strikes
Hairston just made J Taveras look as good as J Lo.
and now Fisher…again, why not your best with a 1 run lead? Complete foolishness and very risky.
Mhopp who is supposed to be?
He got the job done! Like our bullpen does time and time again.
Thank you Kearns. I’m guessing Masset and maybe Cordero are unavailable today. That could be one reason they went to Fisher.
Any chance Dusty pinch hits for W.T.
Good logic Kyle.
Mhopp, Someone other than Cordero has to close tonite, after he pitched both ends of a “doubleheader” last nite.
And Rhodes and Weathers have both pitched in the first 2 games. We’re likely to see anyone (except Lincoln) tonite.
This series I’m glad Dunn and Kearns are with the other team.
J Taveras wins the battle of the Taveras’.
Masset only threw 21 pitches last nite. He might be the closer tonite.
I wouldnt want to Masset’s role, but if the options are Masset and Weathers, I’d probably lean to Masset.
Tavarez has thrown 34 pitches after that walk. Would be nice to get something going with two outs.
this offense stinks.
Add Hernandez to the list of struggling Reds hitters.
There’s no more room
And where oh where is Masset?
Oh, I went to bed last night…I was so tired I forgot the game wasn’t over.
Looks like he had to go to Masset after all. I’m so glad I didn’t stay up, even though they won.
Wow, not good. This is the game here.
This is a tough spot.
Eeek…can Masset be perfect again? No margin of error!
Bad, bad, bad.
Yep, couldn’t quite do it…unreal, shall I ask why?
That’s why you bring in your best in a close game…Masset can go regularly since he’s a long reliever.
ugh ugh ugh.
and why is Lincoln not in the minors?
Our best wasn’t available tonite. This loss, if we don’t come back, is on our pathetic hitting.
When you are counting on Gonzalez for all your offense you know you are in trouble.
Gotta score two runs here. That’s a tall order.
:-((
Can our terrible offense come through? I’m not feeling good.
Bruce grounds out. One away.
Keep in mind that this display of offensive flatulence has been against the worst pitching staff in MLB.
Lazy fly ball to left. Two away.
At least there is minor league games tonight :p
Rosales fliez out lazily to right.
The Reds go meekly in the ninth, as expected. What a joke.
Gave this one away. Frustrating.
That is some sad sad offense…no excuse there. Guess Dusty’s excuse for having a .320 hitter on the bench is because his knees couldn’t do another game after the 12 inning late one last night
tors
I really hate this team right now. Hate them.
I’ve given up trying to understand why Taveras plays, let alone bats at the top.
This may be the impetus that ends the Lincoln administration, though. It couldn’t be any plainer that the Reds are playing a man short in the bullpen. Dusty (with good reason) simply will not let Mike Lincoln into a close game. To which I say, WTF is he here?
I’ve given up trying to understand why Taveras plays, let alone bats at the top.
Corey Patterson v2.0
Two years of this insane obsession with a ballplayer is reason enough to can Baker. I know the offense stinks no matter what but put your best players on the field.

Thank you Jim, I know it gets old seeing me complain about Dusty but really, his is one of the major reason why this team fails…you put your best players in there every night, and if they can’t cut it you look for someone who can.
We’re a game and half out of first place and our best position player and one of our top pitchers are on the DL. Tough loss but lots of reasons to be happy about this team.
The reason this team fails is because it can’t hit its way out of a paper bag. The offense seems to be getting worse on a daily basis.
This offense (if that is what you call it) is downright awful!!! Pitiful game all around.
The reason for being that close to first place is outstanding pitching. Being that close doesn’t excuse not playing your best players. At the very least platoon Taveras and Dickerson, and the top of the line-up is reserved for your best OBP players not your fastest. The two of them only found their way to 1B once today. How many ABs has it been since Taveras has seen 1B?
The Nationals are by far the worst team in baseball and yet their offense is much more potent than ours right now.
It took great pitching to win this series.
As for being only one and a half behind, with the pitching we’ve had, and the division we’re in, we should be in first place by several games.
There is too much pressure on the pitching staff, it will get to them in time.
There is a lot of hope for the future of this team…I can’t believe the pitching they have at AA, plus Bailey, Josh Renokie, and Robert Manuel at AAA.
Then the hitting of Alonzo, Frasier, Heisey, Stubbs and Valaika this team has a great future…and will be a lot better off after Dusty’s contract is up. At least this time next year there’s a good chance he’ll be on his way out. No more favoritism or putting bad players in the top of the line up just because they’re fast
“Pressure” on the pitching staff? When isn’t there pressure on a pitching staff? It’s there job to go out there everyday with the objective of giving up 0 runs, it doesn’t matter how good your offense is or isn’t.
We’re 1.5 games out of first place but we’re also only 3.5 games out of last place.
